WHAT IS DEMOCRACY? a video installation by Oliver Reesler “What is democracy?” is not one question, but two. On the one hand, the question relates to conditions of the current, parliamentary representative democracies that are scrutinized critically in this project. On the other hand, the question traces different approaches to what a more democratic system might look like and which organizational forms it could take. The project asked “What is democracy?” to activists and political analysts in 18 cities around the world, resulting in a multiplicity of different perspectives and viewpoints. Exhibition runs 25 September – 30 October

Aberdeen Forward …Aberdeen Forward …Aberdeen Forward …Aberdeen Forward …

Aberdeen Forward, a local environmental charity, along with Aberdeenshire Council are to organise a “Give and Take” Day at the Rescue Hall, Peterhead on Saturday, 18th September, 2010.

The idea for the event is people can take along, items such as furniture, kitchenware, books, dvds & cds, toys, and plants/gardenware between 8.30am and 12.00 noon. From 10.00 until 3.00pm the Rescue Hall will be open to the public who can come along and take items they want for FREE.

Clothes, paint, videos and all electrical goods will NOT be accepted.

Teas, coffees and home bakes will be available on the day.

It is hoped that among those who may benefit are families on low incomes, or those setting up home for the first time. It is also hoped that by holding this event, items that might have gone to landfill will be found a new home.

If you wish to arrange large items to be collected to take to the event, you can contact Aberdeen Forward on 01224 560360 or email admin@abzforward.plus.com for more details. There will also be a delivery service on the day for people wanting to take large items away.

By John Sangster

“POWER TO THE PEOPLE”, what does that mean? It was John Lennon who first brought it to my attention, although I am informed that in a 70’s sitcom the character Wolfie Smith was first to utter it. The reason I say this is that when Jimmy Reid died recently almost every article about Mr. Reid began with Lennon’s song.

So! What does it mean? Do the people not already have power, the power to withdraw their labour or the power to remove politicians from their posts? Continue reading »

Last week in Aberdeen Voice, Alex Mitchell brought us a history of Aberdeen from its recognition by the Romans as a settlement, through its development as two separate burghs, the influence of the burgesses and the benevolence of Robert the Bruce. Part 2 of The Old Burghs of Aberdeen continues.

A Mint was established by the end of the 12th century, most likely at Exchequer Row, which issued coinage in the forms of sterlings, groats and half-groats until the reign of James IV (1473-1513). A weekly Sunday market had been established in 1222 and an annual fair in 1273. The local economy was based on fishing and the processing of wool and leather. Continue reading »
