TOURISM AWARDS DINNER115The clock is ticking down on a chance for tourism operators across Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire to shine in a national awards scheme.
The deadline for entries in the Aberdeen City and Shire Tourism Awards (ACSTA) is on June 19, and a final call is being sounded for businesses and individuals to come
forward.

All those who win one of the 14 categories up for grabs in ACSTA will automatically be entered into the Scottish Thistle Awards 2016, in which they will go head to head with other contestants from all over Scotland.

ACSTA chairman Iain Watson says the area has a very high quality tourism sector, and local operators should relish the opportunity to help put a national focus on what Aberdeen and the wider region has to offer.

He adds,

“The fact that we are now a regional final for the Scottish Thistle Awards has really piqued the interest of tourism businesses. We have had a steady flow of entries coming in across all categories, and we expect that number to increase as the deadline approaches.

“Entrants can see there are potentially huge benefits to taking part in ACSTA. If they win their category, they will gain national exposure and the opportunity to demonstrate to the whole country the very high standards to which they operate.

“We know that we have a superb tourism offering here in the north east and this is a fantastic opportunity for us to shout about it. I have no doubt that our local winners will go on to achieve great results in the national scheme.”

The awards categories have been updated to tie-in with the Scottish Thistle Awards. There are categories for accommodation providers, eateries, visitor attractions and events, as well as accolades for individuals who go above and beyond to make sure visitors have a memorable experience.

Hospitality Hero is open to anyone who is working on the front line from tourism guides to bus drivers, while the Ambassador and Young Ambassador awards are for those who show a real passion for the tourism industry.

ACSTA is once again being organised by a sub-committee of Aberdeen City and Shire Hotels’ Association. The awards ceremony and dinner will take place on November 27, 2015 at the Ardoe House Hotel and Spa.

North-east firm Clark Integrated Technologies marked Scottish Apprenticeship Week in style – by coming runner up in the Microsoft Scottish Apprentice Employer of the Year award for small employers.

The technology firm was nominated by one of their own apprentices in the Scotland-wide quest to recognise good practice and help for young people taking the first steps in their technology careers.

18 year old Neil Warren from Oldmeldrum accompanied his boss Austen Clark to the Scottish Parliament where they were presented with the award by Roseanna Cunningham MSP, Cabinet Secretary for Fair Work, Skills and Training.

Since being taken on as the company’s first apprentice earlier this year Neil has become a valued part of the Clark IT team – and judges said they were impressed that Neil had put forward his employers for the honour, saying it demonstrated that he was being ably supported in advancing his career.

Speaking after the awards, Mr Clark, managing director of Clark IT said:

“We had no idea Neil had nominated us for this award so it came completely out of the blue to be told we were shortlisted, and to be invited to Edinburgh to attend the presentations.

“Neil has demonstrated to us the benefits that apprentices bring to business, and we’re delighted that he has become part of the Clark family team.

“Employing young people as modern apprentices will certainly be something that we as a company will seek to pursue in the future.”

Microsoft has developed its Modern Apprenticeship to help businesses in Scotland access talent to build their businesses, and as a way for local young people to gain high quality IT skills and long term employment. Its awards recognise the significant impact made by Modern Apprenticeships in Scotland with both employers and candidates.

Working with over 1,500 commercial partners in Scotland, as well as training partners, the scheme supports young people aged 16-24, improving vital technical skills in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM).

2015 marks the 5th Anniversary of the awards, part of the ‘Get On’ programme which has helped many young people at the start of their careers, including over 7000 apprentices directly employed and trained by Microsoft partners and customers.

Clark IT has over 20 years of experience in providing industry leading support and delivering business-class technology. The company’s integrated solutions provide industry leading services, productivity and cost effective IT platforms for business growth. Its client base stretches from Aberdeen to Inverness.

Francesca DelDinAn engineer who has played a pivotal role in delivering a major North Sea project for Ramboll Oil & Gas has been recognised as one of the top young engineering talents in Europe. Francesca Del Din won second place in the Young Professional of the Year awards run by the EFCA (European Federation of Engineering Consultancy Associations).

Francesca (27) received the accolade for her role as engineering manager for Statoil’s Gina Krog Field Development project in the Norwegian sector, where Ramboll is carrying out the design of the subsea pipelines.

The field – one of Statoil’s major developments – is situated 230km south-west of Stavanger and is due to start production in 2017.

Francesca was praised by the panel of judges for her impressive technical skills and ability to lead a team, and for achieving so much at a very young age. The complex Gina Krog contract covers five sub-projects – one of them being the detailed design of a 27 km and 20″ gas export pipeline which will be routed to the Sleipner A platform.

Tim Martin, managing director of Ramboll Oil & Gas in Aberdeen, says Francesca’s drive and enthusiasm is typical of the Ramboll team. He said:

“As a company we are committed to fostering and nurturing the very best new talent, and so it is very pleasing to see a young member of our team being honoured in this way.

“The Gina Krog project in which Francesca has been involved is relatively complex, and therefore exceptional engineering and leadership skills are key to its success. We are incredibly lucky to have people like Francesca within the Ramboll Oil & Gas team.”

There was further success for the Ramboll group in the EFCA competition, as first place was taken by another one of their engineers. Anne Maloney (31) won the award for her role as project manager for the Queensferry Crossing Project – one of the most extensive construction projects in Scotland in recent times.

Ramboll Oil & Gas is a business unit within the Ramboll Group. With more than four decades of experience, the company is a well-established, independent and highly regarded provider of offshore and onshore engineering consultancy services for the oil and gas industry. Today, Ramboll has offices in the USA, Qatar, Abu Dhabi, India, Denmark, Norway and UK, and employs close to 1,000 specialists.

Clark IT apprentice Neil Warren nominated his employers for the Microsoft Scottish Apprentice Employer of the Year award.

With thanks to Beverly Tricker.

North-east firm Clark Integrated Technologies is in the running for the Microsoft Scottish Apprentice Employer of the Year award.

Neil Warren (18) from Oldmeldrum joined Clark Integrated Technologies (IT) as the company’s first ever apprentice earlier this year, and nominated his employers for the accolade.

The firm has reached the finals and Neil will accompany managing director Austen Clark to the Scottish Parliament later this month, where the winners will be announced.

Neil has appreciated the chance to gain a wide range of on-the-job experience and training through the QA apprenticeship scheme, and felt Clark IT deserved recognition for the “incredible” start they have offered him.

Neil says:

“They took a bit of a risk, taking me on for my enthusiasm, rather than my qualifications as I didn’t have as much to offer on paper as the other applicants.

“Now I’m getting proper training and work experience across a wide range of IT, so I’ve got the best of both worlds which is incredible.”

The winners will be announced at an evening reception at Holyrood in Edinburgh on May 20, during Scottish Apprenticeship Week which runs from 18-22 May.

Taking on the company’s first modern apprentice has been a positive move for Clark IT, according to Mr Clark, who says:

“Neil nominating us for this award came completely out of the blue and it shows how much he’s valued becoming part of the Clark IT family.

“Equally, he has become a valued employee, showing us the benefits that apprentices bring to business. He’s fitted in really well and as a company we are delighted to be providing training within the workplace to help young employees develop and reach their potential.”

The University of Aberdeen’s Elphinstone Institute has launched the 2015 Toulmin Prize, with £500 up for grabs for the winning entry.

The competition, now in its seventh year, commemorates the work of one of the North-east’s finest exponents of the short story.

John Reid (1913-1998) was an Aberdeenshire farm labourer from Rathen, near Fraserburgh, who spent most of his life working long hours for very small rewards.

In odd moments, he jotted down short stories, character studies and bothy tales. Eventually, as David Toulmin, he had a few articles printed in local newspapers.

The first of his 10 books was published when he was 59. The books consist mostly of short stories and reminiscences, with his one novel, Blown Seed, painting a harsh picture of farm life. In the later years of his life, Reid moved to Pittodrie Place, Aberdeen (later to Westhill) and was awarded an honorary degree by the University of Aberdeen in 1986.

The Toulmin Prize is open to all amateur writers over the age of 16. The short story – up to 4000 words in length – should be concerned with some aspect of life in North-east Scotland and may be written in Scots, including Doric, or English, or a mixture of the two. Previous prize-winners cannot submit an entry.

In addition to the cash prize, the winning entry will be published in Leopard Magazine and subsequently featured on the website of the Scots Language Centre.

The award for the best entry will be made at the University of Aberdeen’s May Festival, when the winning story will be read aloud by well-known North-east writer, Sheena Blackhall.

The closing date for entries is 31 March 2015. For entry details and a form, please visit: www.abdn.ac.uk/elphinstone/events/toulmin/

Aberdeen Asset Management/Glover Scholarship Winner Bar Soba, 104 Hanover Street, Edinburgh Aberdeen Asset Management has announced that Caroline Marshall (20) is the winner of its prestigious Glover Scholarship scheme whereby a Scottish student is granted the opportunity to maximise their career opportunities by studying in Japan. A student has won a prestigious scholarship to visit Japan to study language and culture, following in the footsteps of the Aberdeenshire-born entrepreneur Thomas Glover.

As the winner of the 2015 Thomas Blake Glover Aberdeen Asset Scholarship, Caroline Marshall (20) has been awarded a six-week fully-funded intensive language study course at the International Christian University, Tokyo.

A former pupil of Trinity High School and Stonelaw High School, both Rutherglen, Glasgow, Caroline is in her third year studying law at the University of Edinburgh and hopes to pursue a career in international commercial law.

She has a long-established love of the Japanese tradition of the Takarazuka Forum Theatre, a distinguished all-female acting school. This spawned her interest and admiration in the wider Japanese culture and way of life.

She attends Japanese classes and when she learned about the Thomas Glover Scholarship last year, she felt it would provide a fantastic chance to visit, and learn more about, a country that inspires her.

Caroline says:

“I feel really honoured to be afforded this amazing opportunity as I have been passionate about Japan for a number of years but I have never had the opportunity to go there.

“I never dreamt I would have the opportunity to go to Japan and work on language skills and this will be a huge help to my future career and my plans to go into international commercial law.”

The annual scholarship was initiated by the Japan Society of Scotland and is sponsored by Aberdeen Asset Management. It is open to students from all over Scotland with an interest in business and Japan, with six candidates making it through to final interviews at the Japanese Consulate-General in Edinburgh last month.

The scholarship is named after the Scottish entrepreneur Thomas Blake Glover who was born in Aberdeenshire in 1838. Glover settled in Nagasaki in 1859 and played a critically important role in opening Japan to the west. Known as the Scottish Samurai, he introduced the first railway locomotive, started the Kirin brewery and influenced the industrial development of Mitsubishi.

The scholarship aims to recognise these successes by providing young Scots with the opportunity to learn about business and culture in the hope of further improving Scotland’s historic links with Japan. Aberdeen Asset Management has been investing in Japan since the 1980s, opening an office in Tokyo in 2006.

Martin Gilbert, chief executive of Aberdeen Asset Management, says:

“We are proud to support initiatives which give committed and enthusiastic Scots an opportunity to advance their career opportunities and with a such keen interest in Japan, both culturally and commercially, Caroline was a clear winner.

“This scholarship offers an exceptional opportunity to experience Japanese education, industries and lifestyle and an opportunity to forge new partnerships with the country, which has one of the world’s largest economies.”

More information about the scholarship can be found at www.facebook.com/GloverScholarship, www.twitter.com/gloverscholar  and www.japansocietyofscotland.org.uk/

Steve Harris, Chief Executive of VisitAberdeen

With thanks to Stevie Brown.

VisitAberdeen has responded to news of an unwelcome award for the City.

Aberdeen has been awarded the ‘Plook on the Plinth’ trophy having been named as the winner of the title ‘most dismal town in Scotland’ at the latest of Urban Realm magazine’s annual ‘Carbuncle Awards’.

Referred to on the Urban Realm site as “where architecture goes to die”, Aberdeen was awarded the trophy ahead of towns such as Cumbernauld, East Kilbride and Leven.

Steve Harris, Chief Executive of VisitAberdeen says,

“I am pleased that we have been given this award as anything that draws attention to Aberdeen can only help people realise how preposterous and ignorant its award is.

“Aberdeen is a stunning city with beautiful parks and gardens, a beach that runs for miles right into the city centre and some stunning architecture.

“Marischal College is the second largest granite building in the world and stands comparison with buildings in any city. At the other end of the scale, the stunning, modern Sir Duncan Rice Library has won awards from both the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland (RIAS) and Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA).

“In between there is the fabulous granite architecture created by Archibald Simpson, amongst others.  Not only was he responsible for Marischal College but also many other fine buildings including The Athenaeum, what was The North of Scotland Bank and Bon Accord Terrace.

“Aberdeen also is blessed with many fine merchant houses, a sunken Victorian garden and a theatre designed by Frank Matcham (who also had the Blackpool Tower Ballroom, London Palladium and London Coliseum amongst many others to his name).

“With development proceeding apace in many parts of the city and a new City Centre Regeneration Plan due this summer, the future looks bright.

“Urban Realm, the creator of this award, is Glasgow based and has no presence in Aberdeen. Their circulation isn’t available on their website and their page on “forthcoming issues” is blank.  (http://www.urbanrealm.com/magazine/forthcomingissues) They clearly need all the publicity that they can get!”

VisitAberdeen is a partnership between Aberdeen City Council and the industry including Aberdeen City and Shire Hotels Association and Aberdeen Inspired. For further information contact VisitAberdeen on 01224 900490 or visit www.visitaberdeen.com.

banchory-lodge-hotel-over-the-river-viewWhen the current owners of the Banchory Lodge  bought the Hotel three years ago, it was their dream to turn the stunning property into one of the region’s top hotels and restaurants. There would be no better way for the business partners to celebrate their third anniversary later this month than by picking up one the area’s top tourism accolades.

Banchory Lodge Hotel has been shortlisted for the title of best restaurant experience at the Aberdeen City and Shire Tourism Awards, which will be announced at the end of this month.

Situated on the outskirts of the town, the hotel – a white Georgian mansion – first opened its doors to the public as a hotel in 1936. Almost 80 years later, it continues to operate as a hotel and has carved out a reputation as a top eatery.

Business has almost tripled since it was taken over by the consortium, and that is in no small part down their investment into a major refurbishment which has seen the hotel mix its classic Georgian features with well-placed modern touches.

Director Carol Fowler explains,

“When we first started the refurbishment nearly three years ago, we knew that regardless of our vision, we wanted to respect the original features of the Georgian house. We have managed to do exactly that while still giving the mansion a more contemporary touch.

“Although we are set in the countryside, we wanted to give the restaurant a city feel. In order to do this we travelled to some of the UK’s biggest cities including London and Edinburgh to get a feel for what makes a good city dining experience.

“All of our menus include quirky hand-drawn cartoons that represent the surrounding Deeside area and have proved a real hit with customers. We have a variety of menus to suit the particular type of dining experience that our customers are after, which include brunch, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner menus.

“Working in partnership with local suppliers and ensuring food is fresh and of high quality is extremely important to us and allows us to create dishes that will have customers wanting to come back for more.

“The end of January will mark three years since we bought the hotel and I cannot think of a better way to celebrate the occasion than with an Aberdeen City and Shire Tourism award win – it would be great recognition for our entire team at Banchory Lodge who have helped our vision become a reality.”

To entice the younger generation to visit the restaurant, the hotel has extended its bar and transformed it into a funky area where customers can enjoy a drink before dinner or dine from the main menu in slightly less formal surroundings.

In the main dining area, customers can also enjoy the main menu which has everything from a sharing platter of Cotê de Beouf to a classic beer battered haddock. The hotel has embraced the recent popularity of afternoon tea, but has added a touch that nowhere else can provide. Served between two and four, tea, sandwiches and cakes can be enjoyed on the terrace or down by the river.

Banchory Lodge Hotel faces competition from Ardoe House Hotel and Spa, situated in Blair’s, and Atlantis Restaurant housed in The Mariner hotel, located in Aberdeen City Centre, in the best restaurant experience category in the 2015 Aberdeen City and Shire Tourism Awards (ACSTA).

Finalists will have to wait until January 30th to find out who the winners are. This will be revealed at a ceremony at Ardoe House Hotel and Spa in Aberdeen by the host for the evening, broadcaster & radio host, Tam Cowan. Further information about the awards is available at www.acsta.co.uk
