Scrap Trident – Aberdeen CND Weekend Of Action

Aberdeen and District Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament invite you to a weekend of action from 13th to 15th April to scrap the Trident nuclear missile system. With thanks to Jonathan Russell.

There are many reasons to get involved:

The abhorrence of Nuclear weapons and their potential for mass slaughter and ultimately to destroy our planet.
At a time of massive cuts in public spending the one obvious cut is that of the replacement for Trident, estimated by Greenpeace at £97 billion

Whether you are for, against or undecided on the question of independence, the debate will foreground the question on whether we should have nuclear weapons in Scotland, the UK or, indeed, anywhere in the world.

A coalition of groups opposed to Trident has been formed both at Scottish level and locally – see: http://scraptrident.org/ – as a result of which there will be joint action by a number of local groups over the coming weeks which will include:

Weekly stalls/leafleting outside Marks and Spencer’s on every Saturday: 23rd, 30th March and 6thApril from 2-4pm
On March 30th at 2pm there will be a gathering outside Marks and Spencer with speakers opposed to Trident
On Sunday 31st March there will be non-violent direct action training from 2-6pm at the Belmont Cinema
On Saturday 13th April there will be a coach going to the demonstration in Glasgow leaving from Spa Street (at the back of His Majesty’s Theatre) at 7.30am. The coach will leave from Glasgow at 4pm and return to Aberdeen for around 7.30pm. Cost of tickets will be £12 waged / £8 unwaged.

Jacki Parry At Peacock: First N.E. Exhibition In 14 Years

Peacock Visual Arts are proud to welcome renowned paper maker Jacki Parry to exhibit in the main gallery.

Resonance (Paper As Memory) will include a selection of handmade paper sculptures and prints, both large and small scale, free standing and wall mounted.
Works will include the large scale installation Ocean, which cascades from the ceiling like a large ‘ocean wave,’ alerting us to both the natural and textile-like qualities of paper.

The Boolakeel Series of handmade digital prints, which play with paper’s association with mass communications; while their subtitle, The Wind Among the Rushes, leads us to the scene in Boolakeel, rural Ireland, which inspired their creation.

Small sculptural pieces such as Yellow Venus, which almost seem to burst with air and showcase Jacki’s skills at sewing, folding, and weaving paper, alongside making it.

A number of these works featured in Jacki’s exhibition ‘Resonance’ at Glasgow Print Studio in 2012. This exhibition at Peacock Visual Arts will also showcase some exciting new work currently in progress, plus an interview with Jacki, filmed earlier this year in her Glasgow studio.

About the Artist

Jacki Parry was born in Wonthaggi, Australia, and graduated as a teacher of secondary art and craft from Melbourne Teachers College. Jacki moved to the UK in 1965, and Scotland in 1970 where she has lived since. In 1972 while a student at Glasgow School of Art Jacki became one of the founding members of the Glasgow Print Studio, and had her first solo exhibition there in February 2012 to open their 40th anniversary celebrations.

In 1985 Jacki founded Gallowgate Studios, Glasgow with partner and painter John Taylor, where her studio, The Paper Workshop, was established.

In 1991 Jacki was appointed Senior Lecturer, Head of Printmaking at Glasgow School of Art, where she continued to teach until her retirement in 2006.

For the past 30 years Jacki has continually explored the material and perceptual possibilities of paper and print, studying with the master American papermaker Laurence Barker in Barcelona, and Tadao Endo in Shiroishi, Japan.

Jacki now works full time in her Glasgow studio, and was elected to the Royal Scottish Academy in 2009. She has also lectured and exhibited in the UK and internationally.

Kirsty Young, Communications Manager at Peacock Visual Arts says, “We are all very excited that Jacki is bringing this exhibition to Aberdeen. Not only will we see work included in her first solo show from 2012, Resonance, but also a selection of brand new work. This is a fantastic opportunity to get up close to, and be inspired by, some very delicate and beautiful pieces of paper sculpture’.

Peacock Visual Arts’ inaugural In Motion Animation Festival presents an exciting programme of short and feature films, curated from around the world and screened at The Belmont Picturehouse.

It will also feature an intriguing exhibition of drawings and paintings by award-winning artist/animator Thomas Hicks and workshops for all ages, taking place at venues across the City of Aberdeen.

The festival is co-curated by Susie Wilson and Thomas Hicks.

Richard Thompson Plays Edinburgh

Richard Thompson returns with a brand new, guitar-driven record. “Electric” is released by Proper Records on Monday February 11th. Richard, who is a frequent visitor to Aberdeenshire, sent Aberdeen Voice an advance copy. Those who’ve heard it so far love it.

Richard’s Electric Trio will be taking to the road for a major UK tour on Wednesday February 20th, and will tour the USA starting in March.

The tour reaches Scotland on Thursday 28 Feb with a concert at Edinburgh’s Usher Hall.

After taking the bold step of recording his last album of new songs live, when it came to recording “Electric”, Thompson turned to Buddy Miller (Robert Plant’s Band Of Joy, Solomon Burke, Emmylou Harris, Patty Griffin) to produce it, recording at Miller’s home studio in Nashville, Tennessee.

Miller, who is renowned himself for his guitar skills recently told Rolling Stone:

“I played along on the record, playing rhythm guitar for him, and I got a two-week guitar lesson while he camped out in my house.”

The disc was recorded as an electric trio with Thompson, drummer Michael Jerome and bassist Taras Prodaniuk, who both sing background vocals. Jerome and Prodaniuk formed part of the band which recorded and toured Thompson’s UK Top Twenty album “Dream Attic”, released in August 2010.

They make up the trio with Thompson on his forthcoming UK dates, his first extensive tour in two years.

Guests on “Electric” include the legendary Alison Krauss, who joins Thompson on “The Snow Goose”. English singer-songwriter Siobhan Maher Kennedy, formerly with River City People and now resident in Nashville, adds vocals on several tracks as well. Fiddle great Stuart Duncan also plays on the record: one of America’s leading bluegrass musicians, he played on recent albums by Robert Plant/Alison Krauss and Elvis Costello and will be familiar to UK audiences from BBC4’s Transatlantic Sessions.

Richard Thompson himself commented that:

“We did it ridiculously quickly. But it sounds great. It turned out surprisingly funky, sort of a new genre – folk-funk. It’s quite snappy, somewhere between Judy Collins and Bootsy Collins.”

“Electric” will be released as a Standard CD, Deluxe two–disc set and on 180 gram vinyl.

Recipient of a BBC Lifetime Achievement Award, Mojo’s Les Paul Award and curator of the prestigious Meltdown Festival at the Southbank in 2010, Thompson was most recently honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award for Songwriting by the Americana Music Association.

“Electric” was recorded earlier this year, 2012 marking the fortieth anniversary of Richard Thompson’s debut solo album, “Henry The Human Fly”. Thompson has now released some forty albums, played on countless other classic recordings, and written more than 400 songs, some of which have been covered by R.E.M., Robert Plant, Elvis Costello, The Futureheads, Bonnie Raitt, Dinosaur Jr., Linda Ronstadt, Los Lobos, and many more.

Rolling Stone has hailed him as “a perennial dark horse contender for the title of greatest living rock guitarist.”
The Independent recently described him as “probably the best guitarist this country has produced, an utterly sui generis talent…”

Thompson says of his fellow trio members:

“Michael Jerome has been with me for about 12 years. He’s actually from Texas; he is a great musician, able to respond to anything that’s put in front of him. Taras Prodaniuk worked a lot with Dwight Yoakam, and more recently with Lucinda Williams. His roots may be in country music, but he’s another extremely gifted and versatile musician.”

Aberdeen And District Campaign For Nuclear Disarmament are holding their Annual General Meeting on Monday, 11th Feb, at The Belmont Cinema.

Christian Allard will lead a discussion on independence, Trident and the way forward for the local group following Scottish CND’s decision to be part of the Yes Scotland campaign for independence.

Options ranging from full participation in the Yes Scotland campaign to no involvement will be discussed.

Book Launch With A Twist For Local Dark Fantasy Author

A book launch with a twist is set to be hosted by local Dark Fantasy author, Carmilla Voiez.

In celebration of the release of Psychonaut, the second book in Carmilla’s Starblood Series, a special evening for fans will be held on Friday 8th February, at Cellar 35, Rosemount Viaduct, Aberdeen, from 8.30p.m. to 1.00a.m.
This event will allow readers to meet the author, hear readings from both of her novels and taking part in a question and answer session.

Entertainment specifically detailed around the worlds of Starblood and Psychonaut – including acts by spooky-magician extraordinaire Dean Spruce and an intriguing and beautiful burlesque performance by Magenta Lust – will also be provided throughout the evening which will end in party style with music by Aberdeen DJ, Jimsin.

A Goth for over 20 years, Carmilla sold her Gothic Clothing business last year since when she has been writing top selling books which are inspired by the Gothic subculture, magic and dark desires and explore sexual obsession and violence in often hard-hitting ways.

Carmilla finds inspiration in local beauty, stately homes, the Moray Firth and woodlands around the Scottish town where she has lived the past 10 years with Starblood, the first book in the series, being set partly in the beautiful Cairngorm mountains and partly in the city in South West England where she grew up. She currently lives with her husband, daughters and numerous cats in Banff, where she is writing the final book in the series.

Carmilla’s literary interests also extend to the Aberdeen Writers’ Club which she co-founded in 2011 as a forum where local writers gather to discuss ideas and writing techniques.

Constellations: Art Exhibition By Bibo Weber

Constellations, an exhibition of work by German artist Bibo Weber will run at MUSA in Exchange Street from 15th January until 24th March, 2013.

An Aberdeen resident since 2009, Bibo creates sculptures and other artwork in a variety of media and techniques, using natural materials like driftwood and ceramic as well as non-organic materials and found objects.

Her artwork deals with our connectedness with nature and the transience of life, and is influenced by imagery of supernatural beliefs from different cultures and inspired by the forms she sees in the natural world around her.

Bibo often brings her sculptures into a natural environment in which she feels it merges with its surroundings and, by doing this, creates temporary installations.

A wide range of Bibo’s recent work, including sculpture, photography and ceramics, can be seen in Constellations, her first solo exhibition, which runs at MUSA from this week.

The main elements in Constellations are the tall wooden sculptures which are loosely based on the totems of North Pacific Native Americans. A totem can be the symbol of a tribe, clan, family or individual, and it bears testimony to a close affinity to nature.

By using symbolic shapes and texture and the use of mainly organic material, Bibo’s artwork explores the spirit of people and nature, interspersed with imagery of the North East coast of Scotland as seen through the artist’s eyes.

The main material from which the sculptures are made is recovered wood which, once carved and shaped, is resurrected in the form of narrative constellations.

Bibo arranges and photographs these constellations to evoke specific encounters – similar to pictures in an old family album.
Some of these photographs, which are taken along the Aberdeenshire coastline, can also be seen at the exhibition as large-format prints.

One of the works in this exhibition, Yamatanka, is a large, mixed-media, full-head mask which Bibo was inspired to create after seeing a performance in Aberdeen by a group of Tibetan monks from the Tashi Lhunpo Monastery.

Yamantaka is the Tibetan god of wrath who overcomes death by adopting the appearance of Death and whose terrifying appearance is said to protect us from external evil.

There are also some of Bibo’s ceramics on display and, in keeping with the general theme of ‘natural environment’ these small sculptures and vases are inspired by the forms, colours and textures of kelp seaweed.

Over the last year Bibo has contributed to a number of exhibitions in London, Chichester, Edinburgh Paisley Dunkeld and Aberdeen and is planning another Constellations exhibition which will be held in the Duthie Park Winter Gardens later this year.

The Hogmanay Hootenanny stars Smokin’ Catfish, Catford, The Jellyman’s Daughter, and is Monday 31st December 8.30pm till late at The Blue Lamp, Gallowgate .

Smokin’ Catfish – local 5-piece bluegrass outlaws Smokin’ Catfish have been surprising audiences in Aberdeen since summer 2008 with their stunning harmonies and foot-stomping live performances.

This traditional bluegrass line up with its inbuilt rock ‘n’ roll attitude will wear out your dancing shoes in an explosion of high-octane, string-pickin’ fun.

Catford play songs with an emphasis on creamy vocal harmonies, textured rhythms, vivid melodies, and all underpinned by great musicianship and packed with soul.

This recently-formed band of four diverse multi-instrumentalists – hailing from the North-East of Scotland – blend American and Scottish folk influences with rhythms borrowed from across the globe to create a potent mix that sets them apart. Featuring local singer/songwriters Steve Crawford and Davy Cattanach, augmented by the amazing Jonny Hardie (Old Blind Dogs) and local multi-instrumentalist Pete Coutts

The Jellyman’s Daughter are a unique new duo from Edinburgh. Their interweaving vocal harmonies are complimented by an interesting mix of cello and acoustic guitar. One of the distinguishing features of The Jellyman’s Daughter is the innovative rhythmic style of cello playing providing a catchy percussive backbeat to some of their songs, contrasted by the intimacy of others.

Music And Poetry Night To Fund Trees For Palestine

Aberdeen Scottish Palestine Solidarity Campaign (AbSPSC) has organised an evening of protest/political tunes and poetry to help fundraise for the Plant-a-Tree in Palestine project. With thanks to Mike Martin.

Thousands of Palestinian families in the West Bank are being displaced, losing their land to make way for illegal settlers supported by the Israeli state.
Tens of thousands of olive trees have been destroyed in the process, many of which have been cared for by the same Palestinian families for generations.

The Plant-a-Tree in Palestine project seeks to assist Palestinians in their struggle to rebuild their livelihoods by providing the means to plant trees indigenous to Palestine’s natural environment and agricultural life.

Plant-a-Tree in Palestine is a joint project between the Middle East Children’s Alliance, the Palestinian Grassroots Anti-Apartheid Wall Campaign (Stop the Wall) and the Palestinian Farmers Union

The evening will feature the music of Mark Ayling, Simon Gall and Maze McPunklet as well as the poetry of the marvellous Hilda Meers!

Entry: £6 – and for an additional £6 you will also receive a certificate to say you’ve donated a tree to Palestine.
