The penultimate stage of the Glacier Energy Masters Under 12 winter grand prix takes place at Westburn Tennis Centre on Sunday from 8.45 am.

Stonehaven youngster Patrick Young currently stands ten points clear of second placed Cameron Edward (Cults).

The overall standings at present are – Patrick Young (Stonehaven) – 37 pts; Cameron Edward (Cults) 27; Ross Martin (DL Aberdeen) 19; Conor McMahon (Rubislaw) 18; Szymon Kierwaick (DL Aberdeen) 17; Anthony Low (Udny) 15; Fin Pearson (Banchory) 8; Michael Whelan (Cults) 5. Everyone, other than Michael, is playing this weekend.

North east clubs are reminded that all should be represented at the forthcoming meeting on Tuesday 6th March when details of this season’s leagues will be discussed including the introduction of the LTA League Planner which places new responsibilities on team captains.

The meeting will take place at Cults Tennis Club, commencing at 7 pm.

With just two rounds remaining, Stonehaven’s Patrick Young now leads the Glacier Energy Masters Under 12 Winter Grand Prix by ten points, after winning the fourth of the monthly events at Westburn Tennis Centre.

Ross Martin (David Lloyd Aberdeen) was runner-up in the latest contest, with Cameron Edward (Cults) third.

The Glacier Energy Masters Under 12 Winter Grand Prix resumes this Sunday at Westburn Tennis Centre, with Stonehaven youngster Patrick Young looking to consolidate his position at the top of the leaderboard.

Sunday’s event, the fourth of six, gets underway at 8.45 am, with all eight contenders participating, other than third-placed Conor McMahon (Rubislaw), who is taking part in another competition.

The opening day of the 5th Stewart Milne Group Indoor Championships produced some excellent tennis at the Westburn Tennis Centre with a couple of the seeded players in the Boys 16 & Under event failing to reach the quarter final stage. With thanks to Dave Macdermid.

Rubislaw’s Ross Findlay recovered from the loss of a close first set tie-break, which he lost 8-6, to oust Cameron Ritchie (Kinnoull), the number six seed, winning 6-7 (6), 6-3, (10-5).

Cameron’s clubmate Ryan Martin fared better though with a comprehensive straight sets victory over David Holmes (Dunfermline), seeded three.

The favourite, Scott Macaulay (Western) progressed safely, losing just a single game against Torphins youngster William McLellan.

The finals of the NESLTA ROGY Under 8 and Under 9 events at Westburn saw Westhill’s Cameron Jappy lift the boys under 8 event with a 10-7, 5-10, 10-3 final victory over Harrshra Pradeep Kumar (DL Aberdeen) in the final.

Alford youngster Ewan Smith was third, with Ross Grant (Westhill) fourth.

The under 8 girls title went to Abigail Doran (Stonehaven) with Varada Kamate (Cults) the runner-up.

Jamie Connel (Rubislaw) won the Boys 9’s with a 10-6 win over Harrshra Pradeep Kumar, with the girls title going to Jodie Harris (Stonehaven), with Varada Kamate again the runner-up.

North County Tennis Competition At Westburn

This weekend will see Westburn Tennis centre host the annual North County Inter District Red, Orange and Green (ROGY) competition, between the 4 districts in the North County.

This event, now in its 2nd year, was set up by North East District Coach Vikki Paterson

Vikki commented:

“I am heavily involved in the running of the North County Cup teams from Under 10’s through to Under 18’s and this is a great way to see the younger players coming through for the years ahead. It is a great opportunity for the players to play in a team and represent their district.”

On Sunday 18th of December the finals of the North East Red and Orange tour will take place, involving the top 8 boys and top 4 girls at Under 8 and Under 9.

This year the ROGY Tour events have recorded over 800 matches, a substantial increase on the previous year, much to Vikki’s delight.

“This year NESTLA was granted funding from Awards For All, and this has allowed me to put on more events, including indoors ones too. We have had really good support from the local players and Sunday should provide some great tennis.”

Aberdeen Voice presents a brief update on local tennis tournaments and news.

Patrick Young consolidated his position at the top of the Glacier Energy Masters Under 12 leader board after winning the third monthly event at Westburn Tennis Centre.

The Stonehaven youngster (pictured) defeated Cameron Edwards 4-2, 4-1 in the final to open up a seven point gap at the top of the table.

Conor McMahon (Rubislaw) finished in third place with Szymon Kierkiaw (David Lloyd Aberdeen) in fourth.

This Friday is the closing date for entries into the Stewart Milne Group Indoor Tennis Championships which gets underway later this month at Westburn.

The Grade 3 tournaments starts on the 28th December with the 12’s, 14’s and 16’s girls singles and the 12’s, 16’s and 18’s boys singles with the senior events following on the weekend of the 7th and 8th January.

Dave Macdermid brings Voice readers news of the latest outcomes in City tennis competitions.

This Sunday sees the third of the monthly Glacier Energy Masters Under 12 event at Westburn Tennis Centre where Patrick Young will be looking to consolidate his position at the top of the leader board after the opening two events.
The Stonehaven youngster is currently on 19 points ahead of Cameron Edwards (Cults) on 14 and Rubislaw’s Conor McMahon on 12.

Congratulations to the two North East teams that took part in the ‘Orange’ pre-Christmas competition at Stirling, with the ‘North East Tigers’ winning the 11-team event and the ‘North East Lions’ finishing third.

Representing the Tigers were Harrsha Pradeep Kumar, Jamie Connell, Cameron Jappy and Ewan Smith, while the Lions were represented by Gabe Kennedy, Jodie Harris, Rosie Sterk and Varada Kamate.

District coach Vikki Paterson accompanied the squads.

When the clocks go back, this doesn’t mean that gardening duties stop, unfortunately. Bucksburn in Bloom’s President Drew Levy offers some timely tips for November as winter approaches.

Leaves seem to get everywhere and cover everything including your lawn, flower beds and paths, but once collected, they make excellent leaf mould.
Your lawn might be covered in leaves and raking can be a chore – so take out your mower, attach its collecting box, select a high lift setting so as not to cut the grass and use it as a vacuum cleaner.
Not only does this make it easier to collect the leaves, but it also helps chop them up, aiding the rotting process.

They can go on your compost heap or into your compost bin, but remember to cover them with an old piece of carpet or close the compost bin lid, as they’ll all blow out again if you don’t.

If you don’t have a compost bin, but have a spare area at the side or back of your shed, you can collect them as before and put them in black bin liners or empty compost bags, adding just a little water to moisten them. Tie the top of the bag and put some small holes in the polythene with your finger to allow air in to help the rotting process.

The leaves will, over winter, turn into leaf mould, which you can put into your flower beds. If you have Acers in your garden, their leaves take a little longer to rot down due to their structure, but they will still turn into the leaf mould that you are looking for.

Worried about your garden pond freezing during the winter? Just drop a couple of tennis balls into the water and this will keep the iced water moving and help prevent the cracking of the pond liner or sides. If you have fish in your pond, take out the tennis balls during the day so that there is a hole to allow the fish to breathe and a place where you can put in their food.

If you haven’t put your spring bulbs in yet, there is still time to plant them before the end of November.

Plant pots which stay outdoors all winter can be helped from freezing to the floor and cracking by cutting small squares of wood to place under them to raise them up off the frozen ground.

Dave Macdermid brings Voice readers news of the latest outcomes in City tennis competitions.

The host club’s Martin Harbord, seeded two, won the men’s singles event at the inaugural Rubislaw Grand Prix event with a 4-6, 6-2, 10-4 final victory over clubmate Babak Alnasser, who had earlier eliminated the favourite, Graeme Matthew (David Lloyd Aberdeen), 6-7 (7), 6-4, 10-6 to reach the final.

The women’s final was also an-all Rubislaw affair with teenage Fiona Hamilton triumphing 6-0, 6-3 over Laura Mulders.
