The Local and Chemikal Underground Records are pleased to announce an extensive RM Hubbert UK tour to celebrate both his winning the Scottish Album of the Year Award with Thirteen Lost & Found, and the imminent release of his follow up album. The tour includes a date at The Tunnels on Saturday 28 September.

Thirteen Lost And FoundHubby has released two albums to date, First & Last (Chemikal Underground), nine solo instrumental guitar pieces heavily influenced by flamenco rhythms and techniques. First & Last was written to help Hubby deal with the death of his parents and return of chronic depression. It’s not as depressing as that sounds.

Thirteen Lost & Found (Chemikal Underground) allowed Hubby to reconnect with old friends with whom he’d lost touch for ten years.

It features collaborations with talented Scottish musicians including Aidan Moffat (Arab Strap), Emma Pollock (The Delgados) Alasdair Roberts, Luke Sutherland (Long Fin Killie, Mogwai) and Hanna Tuulikki (Nalle, Two Wings).

Hubby’s long-time collaborator and friend, Alex Kapranos (Franz Ferdinand) produced.

More details are awaited on his third Chemikal Underground album due for release on 27 September, comprising five instrumental guitar pieces and five songs exploring the idea of letting go, moving on and acceptance.

A prolific live artist, Hubby has toured extensively over the last three years, headlining and supporting, among others, Mogwai, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, The Twilight Sad, Franz Ferdinand and Bill Wells & Aidan Moffat, King Creosote.

On 7 March 2004, Craig B played a solo show for IMP at Drakes.

It’s still talked about today so it’s exciting news that he will be Hubby’s support.

In February 2010, from the ashes of Aereogramme, The Unwinding Hours emerged, with the release of their debut album, almost exactly three years to the day of the release of  Aereogramme’s My Heart Has A Wish That You Would Not Go.

It was, unsurprisingly, brilliant. Reinvigorated and afforded the time necessary to create an album with which they were happy, Craig B and Iain Cook delivered a collection of songs as emotional, dynamic and intelligent as anything Aereogramme produced at their very best. Their second album Afterlives was released in August 2012.

With thanks to Stevie Kearney.

A local charity project helping young people develop their musical talents has backed the release of a debut pop single form a former X-Factor contestant.

Edward McNelis – who performs under the name EddieMAC – spent time in the shmuSOUND studio in Tillydrone, working on his debut single ‘When the Weekend Comes’. The release also features a b-side called ‘It’s All Over’.

Earlier this year, Edward, 19, from Mastrick, auditioned for the X-Factor in Aberdeen and was invited to London for another three stages, coming up just one round short of appearing on the televised show.

Building on this momentum, he joined the shmuSOUND project, which is run through local media charity Station House Media Unit (SHMU), thanks to funding from Creative Scotland’s Youth Music Initiative.

After a series of song writing workshops with the project’s tutors, several sessions in the studio led to the finished tracks, which are now available online and have generated considerable interest from fans across the city.

Both tracks are proudly pop in style, with the a-side track ‘When the Weekend Comes’ set to become a classic anthem for the summer, with its story of rushing home from work to enjoy the weekend. ‘It’s All Over’ is similar in style, but tells the tale of a relationship gone wrong and people moving on.

shmuSOUND’s Stevie Kearney said:-

“It’s been great fun working with Eddie Mac – we think these tracks should be really popular with pop music fans and it’s surely just a matter of time until he gets his break. The X-Factor judges should have kept him in for sure”.

Both tracks are out now and available for free download online.  EddieMAC’s tracks are available online via www.soundcloud.com/eddiemac1 and have already been played on shmuFM. His Facebook page can be found at www.facebook.com/eddiemacaberdeen

Aberdeen Voice’s David Innes reviews ¡No Pasaran! (They Shall Not Pass) – Scots In The Spanish Civil War (Greentrax Recordings)

Alas, there are few, if any heroes left of the International Brigade who fought for democracy in Spain in the 1930s. They were in the vanguard in fighting the inevitable battle against Fascism which would result in the slaughter and waste of a second World War in less than a quarter of a century.

Those who left the UK, and Scotland in particular, are enduring heroes of the left, and of freedom fighters everywhere.

There are memorials and books and commemorative gatherings for these brave socialists, but their dogged idealistic commitment and shared suffering led to great folk art.

Greentrax Recordings are to be commended for compiling the best of the Scottish Civil War songs and poems on a terrific and moving collection.

When the idea for the album was suggested, the compilers were staggered by the wealth of songs and poems available. They were heartened too, by the offers of new material on the theme. Editing the selection down to fifteen songs and a poem must have been a difficult task. Might we expect a second volume?

The collection veers between stirring anthems, none better than the joyous singalong Jarama Valley/Bandiera Rosa, the tender – Jamie Foyers and Si Me Quieres Escribir and simple stories of working class idealists who saw beyond the romantic adventure of the fight for freedom, yet still regarded it as a calling and their duty to enlist. Hasta Luego, a moving tale of a football fan leaving his younger brother at the turnstile to travel to Paris there and then, en route to Spain, is among the best of these.

A highlight for Aberdonians, though, will be local Brigadeer Bob Cooney’s Hasta La Vista, Madrid. Some of us were privileged enough to hear Comrade Cooney read this himself at meetings in the 1970s. This version, impeccably inhabited by Radio Scotland’s Iain Anderson, gives wonderful and moving expression to a rich, celebratory poem full of defiance and hope, scarce currency these days.

It is a fitting coda to a heart-stirring and emotional tribute to the immortal International Brigade.

Tracks: The Peatbog Soldiers (The McCalmans); Jamie Foyers (Dick Gaughan); Jarama Valley/Bandiera Rosa (The Laggan); Another Valley (Geordie McIntyre); Si Me Quieres Escribir (If You Want To Write); (Christine Kydd); These Hands (The Wakes); Owt For Nowt (John Watt); Viva La 15th Brigada/Viva Nicaragua (Carlos Arredondo); Picasso Paints Guernica (Robin Laing); Graves In Spain (Eileen Penman); When The Call Comes (George Archibald & Ian McCalman); Salud International Brigade (Jim Brown); Viva Los Brigadistas (Alison McMorland & Geordie McIntyre); Hasta Luego (Frank Rae); ¡No Pasaran! (Gallo Rojo); Hasta La Vista, Madrid (Iain Anderson)

By Stephen Davy-Osborne.

Following a sell-out performance at Aberdeen’s AECC last month, the students of some of Aberdeen’s secondary schools are set to receive a boost to their fundraising for next year’s Rock Challenge, after an Aberdeen singer announced the proceeds of his latest single will all be donated to the cause.
Myke Black tells Aberdeen Voice all about it.

Myke Black, 25, is an acoustic singer/songwriter based in Aberdeen, and released his debut album, ‘Nice Little Earner’, at the end of 2010.

Speaking of his decision to donate the proceeds of his latest single Do What You Want to Rock Challenge, Myke said:

“I was very impressed by what the charity aims to do, and achieves, for young kids every single year. I am always happy to do my bit for charity, plus the last time I released anything was at the end of 2010, with my debut album Nice Little Earner. So this was an opportunity for me to do something worthwhile for a good cause, and an incentive to record and release a brand new track”.

“I have to admit that I knew nothing about the charity when they first approached me. But once I was told about what they do and the scale they do it on, I was more than keen to get involved!”

Rock Challenge is a worldwide performing arts competition for children aged 12-18, which sees young people express themselves through a piece of dance or drama with their school.

Underlying the event is a message encouraging young people not to get involved with drugs or alcohol; to be their best without the need for stimulants.

Myke was invited to perform the charity single at the AECC as part of the Aberdeen heat of Rock Challenge back in February.  He said:

“I performed the song live in front of 3000 people and it was very well received. I also watched all the performances by the 7 schools that were taking part that night and I was blown away by their efforts.”

Myke added:

“I feel privileged to be a part of Rock Challenge UK and The Be Your Best Foundation and I would be more than happy to continue to with my involvement in the future, providing they feel the same way!”

The single Do What You Want is available for download from iTunes now.
