Self-outed, unfit men of a certain age with a higher-than-is-strictly-good-for-you Body Mass Index have been gathering at all SPL clubs and Hamilton Accies to take part in a health and fitness programme allied to research being carried out by the Medical Research Council and universities. A participating Voice contributor reports, between gulps of oxygen and mouthfuls of bananas.

It’s voluntary, it’s not particularly strenuous and it’s good fun.

About fifteen of us gather every Tuesday at Pittodrie with community coaches Jason and Scott, weigh ourselves, discuss topics such as food intake, mild exercising and the downsides of booze. Everyone has a pedometer with weekly targets on step count.

Last week, following the previous session’s discussions on calorie intake and fat-burning, the pre-session chat was like an edition of ‘Loose Women’ as hairy men discussed the relative merits of low-fat yoghurt and M&M addiction.

Said one participant:

“Of course, I’ll go home and tell the wife that we spent the time talking about last week’s Dons game”

We all knew what he meant.

There’s a superb atmosphere of mutual support for our shared pursuit. Each participant knows what 5% and 10% weight losses will mean personally. Hard work goes on between weekly sessions to reach and exceed step count targets, to avoid industrial estate cheeseburger vans and to reduce the five pints/steak pie matchday ritual.

The track around The Hallowed Turf is ours for the evening to increase that step count. That’s also a time to chat to new friends about our efforts in the previous week and make obscene gestures to the empty away section on each circuit. Old habits die hard.

In the concourse of the Richard Donald Stand, Jason and Scott introduce us to simple exercises to aid fitness and increase strength and suppleness. Rudimentary football drills also feature, but Craig Brown has yet to pop his head round the door and say,

“You’re just what I’m looking for son, you’re partnering Verno upfront on Saturday”.

We’re nearly halfway through the programme, the second that has been run by the Dons Community Department this season. The previous group still meets on a Monday evening to exercise and play mildly strenuous 5-a-side. Some from the current programme have joined them and have been made welcome.

The encouragement and enthusiasm is phenomenal, the laughs many and the dedication remarkable considering we all have day jobs, family commitments and the temptation to lounge on the settee watching Corrie when we really should be strolling around the suburbs overdriving the pedometer.

All results are confidential to the participants and the researchers, but of course we all share our step count and our weight loss, if any.

The current programme completes at the end of April. You’ll hear from me again then.

Dave Macdermid tells Voice: One of Aberdeen Sports Village’s longest standing members has been presented with an outstanding achievement award. David Cheshire, a member since the Sports Village opened in 2009, was presented with his plaque by personal trainer, choreographer to the stars and face of the BBC’s Athens 2004 Olympic campaign, Steve Agyei.

The award recognises all the hard work David has put in to achieve an incredible 1 million Fitlinxx points through use of the gym and exercise classes.
Unbelievably, this equates to over 150,000 minutes of cardio vascular exercise and lifting almost 10 million kilos, equivalent to lifting more than 1500 elephants!

Fitlinxx is a sophisticated fitness management system, which is directly linked to fitness equipment and is designed to guide users through workouts to maximise the gym experience. It adds an extraordinary intelligent dimension to workouts.

Steve Agyei has a very impressive background, working with Beyonce, JLo and Mariah Carey. Sports-wise he has worked with David Beckham, Chelsea FC and Olympic legend Daley Thompson.

Children 1st Fun Runs

Steve will be helping rally the runners at the Children 1st Spring Prom Series Fun Runs, sponsored by Aberdeen Sports Village and Metro Running Club, this April.

These events are open to anyone over 11, regardless of ability, and comprise two 3km runs and one 5km run along the beach prom in aid of Children 1st.

Steve will be attending the runs to motivate and advise runners before the race. He believes this is a great springboard for the summer running season and said, “With local events such as the Baker Hughes 10k and Run Balmoral coming up, it is a great way to help you prepare physically and mentally. Equally for those new to running, a 3k is a great introduction and an ideal target distance to aim for”.

Aberdeen Sports Village has joined the Health Club Awards which recognises the best clubs based on research conducted on members around the country, Dave Macdermid informs Voice.

The Village, a partnership between the University of Aberdeen, Aberdeen City Council and sportscotland, has a large membership base, which makes full use of the extensive fitness suite and additional services.

These are offered both to members and non-members.

The awards, sponsored by Centrum Performance, ask members to rate the quality of customer service, facilities and value for money provided by clubs.

Simon Brown who runs the scheme explains,

“Belonging to a good health club is a rewarding experience. Members probably spend more time there than they realise, and it becomes an integral part of their lifestyle, providing a haven from their frantic day-to-day existence and helping them to tackle life in a healthier, more productive way.

“For the club it’s not easy to get every aspect just right. It requires a lot of hard work and a belief that members should have a rewarding experience every time they visit.

“Through the Health Club Awards we will find out which clubs provide the most rewarding member experience. We will recognise those clubs for their excellence, and ultimately find out which are providing the best experience and membership value across the country.”

Jan Griffiths, the Village’s Sports Development Manager, said,

“We are very proud of the level of service we provide. We believe we offer excellent value for money and are very happy to be nominated to take part in the Health Club Awards this year.”

Aberdeen Sports Village, a partnership between the University of Aberdeen, Aberdeen City Council and sportscotland, has been short-listed in the category of “Newcomer of the Year” at this year’s prestigious National Fitness Awards.  With thanks to Dave Macdermid and The Big Partnership.

The Awards were launched last year to honour operators from across the UK in the health and fitness industry.  The category of Newcomer of the Year is aimed at facilities who have been operating for less than 2 years (as of March 2011), and who have made their mark within the industry in terms of facilities, services and innovation.

The Sports Village has been nominated in this very closely contested category, against new sports facilities, health clubs and gyms from across the whole of the UK.  They impressed the judges, not only with the impressive facilities on site, but also with the numerous high quality activities and services available to everyone in the community.

Jan Griffiths, Sports Development Manager at Aberdeen Sports Village, said:

“The Sports Village strives to be at the cutting edge regarding all aspects of sport, fitness and health, and we are passionate about everything we do.  The local community have really embraced the ethos of the Village, and we are privileged to be able to support and educate our customers in such a welcoming environment.”

The winners in each category at the National Fitness Awards will be announced on Friday 25 November at their Awards Dinner at the International Convention Centre in Birmingham.

The results of Aberdeen Cycle Forum’s annual cycle count show a big increase in levels of cycling in the city. Derek Williams, chair of Aberdeen Cycle Forum told Aberdeen Voice, “Aberdeen‘s commuters are increasingly turning to pedal power. People have been saying that there seem to be more people cycling and this has been confirmed by our count. This is a very impressive year-on-year increase.”

The number of cyclists recorded during the morning rush hour at sites across Aberdeen rose by 18% compared to 2010. The busiest location was King Street, followed by Union Street and the Deeside Line.

ACF has been carrying out annual cycle counts since 2008. Cyclists are counted at eleven key locations around the city between 0730 and 0900, the objective being to gain a metric of cycle activity. Since the first count in 2008, cycling levels have gone up by almost 30%.

Derek Williams added:

Investment in cycling is paying off. The upgrading of the Deeside Line and the cycle lane along King Street are encouraging people to take to their bikes. Measures like better cycle parking and the advance stop boxes at junctions all help too.

“Cycling will also have had a boost as people want to avoid rocketing fuel costs and sitting in traffic queues.”

Aberdeen Cycle Forum is an independent voluntary body set up in 2003 by a group of cyclists and environmentally-aware people who decided that cyclists in Aberdeen should be better represented.

“We believe that Aberdeen can become a truly cycle-friendly city and this count shows we are making steady progress. It is crucial that investment in cycling is maintained.”

The group’s aim is to encourage cycling – for pleasure, cycling to work and to school, to the shops, off-road or on-road. The majority of the Forum’s work is campaigning for better facilities for cyclists in the city.

It also produces the Aberdeen cycle map and run Try Cycling sessions for those who have not been on a bike for a while. Anyone who supports these aims is welcome to join.

To celebrate Bike Week, the UK’s annual festival of cycling, running from 18-26 June 2011, the regular ACF/Get-About Bike to Work challenge is back.

Employers register for the challenge and compete for the Get-About trophy. Journeys by employees during bike week are logged on the challenge’s website and count towards employers’ scores, there are bonus points to be won for people cycling for the first time.
