Bon Accord & St Nicholas has kicked off its 25th birthday celebrations with the announcement that it is adding an iconic fashion brand to its growing list of stores.
Jigsaw clothing is set to open within the Bon Accord mall this autumn in what will be the chain’s first dedicated outlet in the north-east.

The fashion company has been a mainstay of the British high street since 1969 and provides a range of womenswear, menswear, children’s clothing and homeware from over 40 stores throughout the country.

It’s the latest addition to Bon Accord & St Nicholas, which is set to mark its 25th birthday with a year-long programme of events.

The popular mall, which will officially celebrate the milestone on August 22, has been at the heart of Aberdeen’s retail scene since it was opened by Her Majesty the Queen in 1990.

Party plans for the remainder of the year include a student only event, a dedicated ladies night alongside various pop up shops and summer previews which will see the centre and its visitors come together to celebrate the birthday in style.

Craig Stevenson, manager of Bon Accord & St Nicholas, said:

“We’ve been looking to add Jigsaw to our offering at Bon Accord & St Nicholas for some time now and it’s great to finally be able to announce its imminent arrival for autumn this year.

“The store itself will be located within a unit on the ground floor of the Bon Accord mall which will really reinforce this part of the centre as a fashion destination for shoppers. The outlet is set to stock its full range of stylish womenswear, menswear and children’s clothing and I’m sure excitement will continue to build between now and its opening day.

“The announcement is timely as the centre enters its 25th year and we’re currently busy finalising a programme of special events to mark what is an important milestone for all involved. With plans for a student event, a ladies night and various other pop up shops and previews, there really will be something for everyone.”

Peter Ruis, chief executive of Jigsaw, added:

“This is Jigsaw’s first stand-alone store in Aberdeen and we are really excited to be part of this new era for the Bon Accord & St Nicholas Centre. As ever with Jigsaw, the store design will be unique to this location.”

Throughout the last 25 years, the centre has continued to innovate and grow to where it stands today. Currently home to a number of the UK’s leading retail brands, the Bon Accord mall includes Scotland’s largest Next as well as Aberdeen’s only Topshop and Topman standalone stores.

At the heart of its future development are expansive plans to create a new leisure hub within the centres. At the core of the blueprint is a proposed 28,000 sq ft cinema complex and seven new restaurants totalling 30,000 sq ft.

The innovative design includes the creation of a new entrance from Upperkirkgate at Drum’s Lane, leading to an external courtyard and providing access to the upper level of the mall where the new leisure area would be situated. The plans work within the existing footprint of the Bon Accord mall.

Craig Stevenson added:

“At the core of Bon Accord & St Nicholas’ success really has been its willingness to innovate and grow, with various developments over the years at the heart of this. It’s fitting that the new expansion plans, which will be the biggest the centres have ever experienced, will continue to gather momentum throughout our birthday year.

“In a way, we’re looking back to look forward and we’d be delighted for as many people as possible to join us in doing this over the next 12 months to allow our 25th year to be the biggest and best yet.”

Bon Accord & St Nicholas are at the heart of Aberdeen city centre’s retail sector, offering 840,000 sq ft of prime space and home to around 100 stores. Scotland’s largest Next, Aberdeen’s only Topshop and Topman standalone store as well as the City’s largest New Look and River Island are among the key retailers.

The centres, which attract an average of 270,000 visitors a week, are owned by F&C REIT and managed by specialist retail agency Savills. For further on the centres visit www.bonaccordandstnicholas.com

The recently launched Aberdeen office of Ramboll Oil and Gas has continued its strong start to the year by securing a £275,000 contract with a major North Sea operator.

The crude oil booster pump replacement project has been one of the key achievements in an above-anticipated performance in the first quarter of the year.

It is less than a year since the global engineering consultancy launched in Aberdeen, but the company has already won new work with a range of major oil and gas companies operating within the UKCS.

The latest contract win is to deliver a full multi-discipline detailed design and construction engineering project for replacement crude oil pumps on a North Sea platform. The team in Aberdeen will provide 3D cloud scanning services, design and construction engineering.

Managing director Tim Martin says it had been anticipated it would take time for the Ramboll name to become known within Aberdeen, and that the current difficulties facing the energy sector would also impact on its early performance.

He adds:

“This incredibly strong start to the year has been above our expectations and all the indications are that the Aberdeen office of Ramboll Oil and Gas will continue to experience a period of growth as we move into the second quarter.

“We anticipated that the current tough market conditions being experienced in the North Sea and the wider oil industry would negatively impact on our projected growth, but the opposite of that is actually happening and we are making significant breakthroughs.

“The feedback we are receiving is that the Ramboll project management model of offering cost-effective engineering solutions is exactly what is needed at this time.

“Although our clients will work directly with the Aberdeen office, our position of local presence and global knowledge allows us to work with the most talented engineers in a number of international offices to deliver safe, reliable and importantly at this time, cost effective, engineering solutions.”

It is the second major contract win announced by Ramboll Oil and Gas this year, and follows on from the company being awarded the detailed jacket design for Maersk Oil’s Culzean field, located 145 miles east of Aberdeen.

Ramboll Oil & Gas is a business unit within the Ramboll Group. With four decades of experience, the company is a well-established, independent and highly regarded provider of offshore and onshore engineering consultancy services for the oil and gas industry. Today, Ramboll Oil & Gas has offices in the USA, Qatar, Abu Dhabi, India, Denmark, Norway and UK, and employ close to 1,000 specialists.

Visitors at Speyside Distillery surprised by Michael Owen

A former England footballer has experienced the world-famous Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival for himself – with a visit to a distillery that has taken part in the dram-fest for the first time this year.

As a global ambassador for SPEY whisky, Michael Owen called in on its spiritual home, Speyside Distillery, on the closing day of the 2015 festival.

Since retiring from professional football, the star – who played for Liverpool, Real Madrid, Newcastle United, Manchester United and Stoke City – has been the face of SPEY whisky in the Far East.

But while Michael is familiar with the deluxe malt, he is a newcomer to the whisky festival, just like the distillery itself.

It is the first year that the small, boutique distillery, has joined in the five day programme, sharing its secret by opening its doors to a series of exclusive tours hosted by distillery manager Sandy Jamieson.

Michael surprised visitors on Monday (4th May) by dropping in on the celebrations, during which dozens of whisky lovers have been able to get a rare glimpse behind the scenes of the distillery.

He says:

“It was great to be able to visit the distillery and be with my SPEY family as they celebrate being part of the Festival for the first time. There has been a real buzz about the distillery today and I have really enjoyed meeting people who have come from all over the world to visit the Festival.

“You can tell that these people are very passionate about whisky, and it has been a great experience to see them learn more about SPEY and the distillery where it is created.”

Patricia Dillon, Managing Director of Speyside Distillers Co. said:

“Michael has become a familiar Brand Ambassador for SPEY in Asia therefore I am delighted that Michael has joined us during the festival to raise awareness of the SPEY brand among lovers of whisky both in the UK and other parts of the world.”

Michael Owen5aNosings and tastings from four specially selected single malt expressions with varying vintage and cask finishes have been led by Sandy, who has a wealth of experience in the whisky industry.

The distillery has also had Aviemore-based Joanna Miller who specialises in print making and screen painting as its artist in residence, and linked up with the nearby Strathspey Steam Railway to offer visitors on-board nosings and tastings served alongside afternoon tea over the festival weekend.

By joining this year’s programme, Speyside Distillery, located near Kingussie and set against the backdrop of the Cairngorm mountain range, has extended the reach of the festival, becoming the most southerly distillery in the region to take part.

Spirit of Speyside Whisky festival chairman James Campbell is delighted that Speyside Distillery has come on board this year and helped expand the mix of events and establish new partnerships.

James says:

“The continued success and appeal of the festival depends upon being innovative, creative and of course having support right across the industry in Speyside.

“We warmly welcome Speyside Distillery as a new partner this year and look forward to these friendships and links thriving in the future.”

John Harvey McDonough, CEO of Speyside Distillery, is confident that the distillery’s connections with the festival will develop and grow.

John says:

“We are thrilled that Michael, a true icon of international football as well as a great family man, is able to visit SPEY while the whisky festival is in full flow.

“We’re very pleased to be part of an internationally renowned festival that does so much to celebrate the industry and its heritage, its people and of course its produce.”

The 16th annual festival drew to a close on Monday, having featured a packed programme of over 400 events, with music, crafts, food activities running alongside a wide range of distillery tours and tastings. Some distilleries, like Speyside, have been open to the public for the first time in their history.

Speyside Distillery, home of the SPEY brand of malt whisky, has been in production since 1990 and is operated by Speyside Distillers Ltd.

While Speyside Distillery is not normally open to the public it may be familiar to the public as it appeared in the BBC television series Monarch of the Glen as Lagganmore Distillery.

VisitAberdeen is representing the Granite City at European Incentive Business Travel and Meetings (EIBTM) expo, in Barcelona. The three day annual conference takes place between 18 and 20 November, and is an opportunity for Aberdeen to increase its share of the business tourism market.

Aberdeen will be showcased as a buoyant business travel destination to over 9000 global industry buyers in the meetings and events industry looking for cities suitable to host their events.

Jenni Fraser, Business Development Manager and Andrew Pratt, Business Tourism Executive of VisitAberdeen will be networking with decision makers and organisers of business travel to explain why they should make Aberdeen their choice of destination.

Jenni says:

“The quality of the 9000 buyers attending EIBTM and the decision making authority they hold is what marks this event out from other business travel industry expos. I will be selling Aberdeen at a number of pre-scheduled appointments with leading buyers and at networking events.”

As the oil and gas capital of Europe, Aberdeen has a strong pedigree in delivering  meetings and events and with inbound international business tourism on the rise, Aberdeen will play a central role in attracting further economic benefits. In 2013, international business tourists to Scotland spent £296.6 million during their visits, which represents a 20.9% rise on the previous year.

By attending the EIBTM expo, Jenni Fraser and Andrew Pratt, ensure that Aberdeen remains at the forefront of influential buyers’ minds.

In addition to increasing expenditure, there is also a rise in the number of incoming business trips: up 5.3 % on last year and a growth of 6.6% in total number of nights spent in Scotland during business trips.

Jenni says:

“People attending business meetings and events in Scotland are increasingly enhancing their stay by experiencing the culture that their host cities have to offer.

“This opens up opportunities for local leisure providers to capitalise on the disposable income business travel visitors are willing to spend.   Aberdeen is a city which has the support services to make a business trip a diverse experience, with award winning restaurants and cocktail bars, historic Old Aberdeen and bespoke outdoor activities in conjunction with the capacity to hold large and intimate scale events.

“Aberdeen is widely accessible to the international community due to the long established routes to key European hub airports in Frankfurt, Heathrow, Amsterdam and London therefore it is easy and convenient to reach Aberdeen from across the globe.

“With the new four star Village Urban Resort, opening this December, along with seven more brand new hotels there is rising room capacity and choice in the city which will be central in sustaining Aberdeen as a top business travel and meetings destination.”

Aberdeen has risen to 11th position in a survey of the UK’s cities as destinations for business tourism and events. Aberdeen ranked 20th in 2012 and 16th in 2013, so the city’s ranking has risen considerably over a two year period.

The British Meetings and Events Industry Survey brings together the responses of 500 conference organisers; 250 from the corporate sector and 250 from the not for profit sector.

Respondents are asked in which cities they have held events. London, Birmingham and Manchester are the top three destinations in 2014, with Edinburgh 4th and Glasgow 7th.

The survey also reveals that associations are organising more events than in the previous years and that their budgets are growing. The 2014/15 report shows that 30% of UK based associations expect to organise more events in the coming 12 months. According to VisitScotland, business tourism is worth more than £1.9 billion to Scotland. Spend per night by business visitors is 1.5 times higher than that of leisure visitors.

Brian Horsburgh, AECC’s Managing Director says,

“We are delighted to see Aberdeen move up again this year in the Top UK Destinations. We welcomed 87 large conferences which attracted over 30,000 delegates to AECC in the 12 months to June 2014 and are pleased that conference organisers see the attraction of Aberdeen City and Shire for both delegates and exhibitors.”

Steve Harris, Chief Executive of VisitAberdeen welcomes the report,

“We tend to take it for granted that our buoyant economy, and the energy sector in particular, attract business trips to Aberdeen; but this report reflects what is called discretionary business tourism. This is where people have a choice of destinations for their events. The reports shows how Aberdeen is gaining in reputation and awareness as a city which really delivers on business events.

“Our two universities and our centre of excellence for the oil and gas industry mean that not only are our venues a major attraction for business visitors, but our global experts based here are playing a key role as ambassadors bringing their association events to Aberdeen.”

Steve continues,

“Aberdeen has always been an accessible city, but the opening up of new flight routes makes us even more connected to those in the UK and overseas. The sharp increase in hotel bedrooms in the city – with an additional 1400 on the horizon – means we are even more equipped than ever before to deliver larger events in Aberdeen.”

Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire are to be marketed to Chinese tourists in a new drive by tourism agency VisitAberdeen.

The campaign will see the creation of a new website for the lucrative Chinese market, as well as attendance at key tourism events aimed at encouraging visitors to the region.

Steve Harris, Chief Executive of VisitAberdeen, said:

“China boasts the largest outbound tourism market and is the highest spender on overseas travel, contributing $124 billion (around £78 billion) to the global tourism industry – 50% higher than that of the USA.

“This willingness to travel and explore overseas, coupled with a cultural love of golf, whisky and history, makes Aberdeen the perfect destination for Chinese tourists. With 60 golf courses within an hour of the city, some of the world’s most famous whisky brands including The Glenlivet and Royal Lochnagar, and a number of the finest castles in Scotland, Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire have a lot of offer Chinese tourists.”

There are now around 638 million Chinese internet users who make $22 billion (almost £14 billion) worth of bookings online each year. VisitAberdeen will capitalise on this with the launch of a new website aimed at Chinese tourists looking to travel overseas.

Steve continued:

“We have been working with the China Business Network (CBN) to create a new website which will be hosted on the China Wide Web. This has involved the translation of a large portion of the VisitAberdeen website, which will provide useful information to those wishing to travel from China to Aberdeen.

“This year 110 million Chinese tourists travelled overseas, and it is predicted that in the next 15 years this will increase to 500 million. Through the introduction of our new website, we will reach out to those travellers and show them all that Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire has to offer.

“We are also working to produce Chinese brochures and literature that will be distributed throughout the country, and will be represented by the CBN at the China International Travel Mart from 14-16 November.”

In 2015, VisitAberdeen plans to have a presence at further international travel markets in China, in order to reach out to tourism operators to show them the value of Aberdeen as a tourism destination. VisitAberdeen will attend the China Outbound Travel and Tourism Market, and Incentive Travel and Conventions, Meetings China exhibitions next year.

By Banff & Buchan MP Dr Eilidh Whiteford.

Eilidh Whiteford MP Peterhead Harbour (1)

It was back to London for me this week as the long Westminster recess came to an end. I was pleased to find it’s still warm and sunny there, even if Summer seems to have abandoned us here in the North-east. As well as parliament catching up on events that have developed over the break, we also passed the second reading of a pensions bill that will give those with occupational pensions more flexibility when they retire.

I’ve been talking a lot about pensions in recent weeks. As I’ve been out chapping doors ahead of the Referendum, I’ve been reassuring pensioners that their State Pensions will be paid on time and in full in the event of a Yes vote, administered from offices in Dundee and Motherwell, just as they are at the moment.

I’ve been reminding them that their entitlement is based on their contributions record – not where they choose to live. Many thousands of pensioners go off to live in Spain and France nowadays, but all receive their pensions, because they worked for it, and I welcome the confirmation from the UK Pensions Minister that state pensions are secure regardless of the outcome of the Referendum.

But in Scotland we can do better. We spend a lower proportion of our GDP on pensions than the rest of the UK, and life expectancy lags stubbornly behind the UK average. A Scottish pensioner retiring in 2016 will, on average, receive £10,000 less in pension over their lifetime than pensioners elsewhere in the UK.

That’s one reason why we need to tailor pensions to Scotland’s circumstances and look again at whether we really need to raise the pension age beyond 67, as the UK plans to do. Control of our economy would also give us the levers to address the longer term demographic challenges faced by all Western countries with low birthrates and aging populations.

Scotland’s relative economic strength means that we are better placed to ensure that our citizens enjoy a dignified retirement with a secure income in old age.

We can afford to do things differently, and a Yes vote in September will allow us to do just that.

SaltireJack2By Fin Hall – Writer Photographer, Realist.

I am rapidly approaching my 62nd birthday; in fact by the time that I cast my vote on the 18th of September, that milestone will have passed.
My views on independence has never changed since I first was eligible to put a cross on my first voting paper. It has always been an easy choice to be a yes voter.

When I was 18 I voluntarily joined the army, not any of the Scottish regiments, that would involve too much, hard, physical work, but The Royal Signals, as a radio operator.

When I was filling out my application form, two things rankled me. One was the fact that it was not permissible to put the word ‘atheist’ in the box for my religion. The other being, that I wasn’t allowed to enter ‘Scottish’ in the section reserved for nationality.

I have never been anti-English, nor, on the other hand, have I ever been a Braveheart style nationalist. Both of these options are narrow minded, and potentially dangerous characteristics.

Not long after enlisting, there was an election of some sorts in Aberdeen. I remember getting my dad to vote by proxy for me, something I don’t believe one can do now. This is where I am not sure of my facts, but spurred on by the application form, I seem to recall getting him to vote for the SNP candidate. I am not sure who that would have been, but it was the start of the road to where I am now.

In the seventies when Jim Callaghan’s Labour Government ( remember them? Real labour) cheated us out of our right to devolution, by stating that we needed to get at least 46% of the population to cast their vote for the victory to be assured, I was devastated that our proud people, couldn’t drag themselves along to the polling stations in the appropriate numbers.

Fast forward to Tony Blair and his New Labour posse riding into town and delivering the promised, no strings attached, devolution referendum, the result of which is the position we find ourselves in just now. Getting the chance to decide our own future, hopefully the chance to stand on our own two, or should I say five million feet in a few weeks.

There are many reasons why I cannot for the life of me understand why anyone, I mean anyone, could even consider not voting to be 100% in complete control of their own lives, whilst still being in a close relationship with their partner.

Scotland is not, and never will be a third world country. We have no need to have to go cap in hand to Westminster, no need for charitable aid donations.

Technology has advanced in leaps and bounds since then, and will develop even further in the future

We have vast oil resources, and despite the fact that Alistair Darling and David Cameron call it ‘volatile’ and that it will run out eventually, I always argue the fact that they have had oil in the a Gulf of Mexico area since 19th century and in the Middle East since somewhere in the middle of the 29th century.

I realise it is different geological circumstances, but it shows no sign of running out there.

I have been hearing this in Aberdeen since it first started coming ashore in the seventies.

Technology has advanced in leaps and bounds since then, and will develop even further in the future, meaning it will be possible to get even more out. Never mind the Clair Ridge recent discovery. So why is it volatile here and not in other parts of the world? How come our oil-sharing neighbours, Norway, aren’t tearing their hair out worrying about the successful country they are?

I have friends that continuously spout out about supporting local businesses as opposed to putting money into the pockets of the multi-nationals, and then support the Better Together side of things, not getting the irony in what they are doing and saying.

By forever being beholden to a power other than our own is like living at home as an adult, in a great, well paying job, handing over all your salary to your mum, getting some pocket money back, and still having to do your own laundry and make your own tea.

In my day job, or should I say my afternoon and evening job, I am a self employed taxi driver. I have been for 37 years, and all but one of non Scottish people I have had in my cab, and discussed the referendum, have stated that they would have voted yes, or will vote yes, for those eligible.

None of them can understand why any one would vote no. They just don’t get it. In fact one Indian guy stated that independence is in their blood from birth.

The one who said she was voting no was a young English born girl of Romanian descent. Her reason was that when Romania became a free country, it didn’t fare well to start with.

this isn’t set up to be a slight on our southern neighbours, but more showing our standing in the world

I asked her if she had the chance back then, would she have voted to remain under the control, effectively of USSR? She thought I was asking a stupid, irrelevant question. Totally failing to get the point, that, because of the fall of the aforesaid communist empire, she wouldn’t necessarily be free and here in Scotland just now.

I have travelled to well over 30 different countries, and generally what happens is, that locals ask if you are English; when you point out to them that you are Scottish, a smile as wide as the Firth of Forth come across their countenance.

This happened to us in August in Northern a France, when in a pizza restaurant ( don’t ask, it was all that was open) when the owner came over and introduced himself to us, and asked that very question. When we told him we were Scottish, he apologised, and got even more friendlier.

Now this isn’t set up to be a slight on our southern neighbours, but more showing our standing in the world, despite the Better Together campaigners saying we are only good because we are conjoined to England via the Westminster umbilical cord. And despite the Better Together rampagers spreading fear and loathing about currency, our pound, pensions, (safe) health service. ( safe unless Westminster cuts funding, which they could do) and other spurious tittle tattle, every day more people are turning our way.

We are a rich and diverse country fill of artists, inventors, discoverers etc. By saying that, I am not implying that we are unique in such a thing, there are many countries the same. The only difference is that they are independent and stand and fall on their own choice, unlike us, who have the burden of paying the price of Westminster’s failings and bullying.

I am voting yes because I come from a proud country, and would like to leave the future totally in the hands of our own decisions, so my grand children and my soon to be born great grand daughter, and for generations to come, can be proud that we, Scotland the Brave, made the right decision, for the right reasons, and not immediately thinking of the penny in our pocket at thus precise moment, and not because we were fearful of being ejected from the EU the rest of the UK may vote to stay in anyway, and not because we hate anyone, but because we are a nation ready for independence and have no wish to still live with our parents, paying our board and living off handouts .

We are not a third world country, but a globally successful one.
