Food and Fiddle Fortnight 2015 - world premier served up

Perfect accompaniment: Final week of Food and Fiddle Fortnight to serve up world public premiere of historic royal tune

Royal Deeside’s Food and Fiddle Fortnight will reach a crescendo this weekend with a number of musical performances, one of which will be a world public premiere.

On the final day of the two-week festival, members of the pipes and drums of The Royal Highland Fusiliers 2nd Battalion The Royal Regiment of Scotland (2 SCOTS) will perform the first public recital of the new pipe tune ‘The Longest Reign’.

The tune, a march, has been composed by Pipe Major of 2 SCOTS Stuart Gillies to commemorate Her Majesty The Queen becoming the longest reigning monarch in British history.

The historic recital of the tune will take place at a free to attend event at Deeside Activity Park near Aboyne on Sunday, 18 October at 2:00pm, and will be one of the final events of Food and Fiddle Fortnight. The pipe band’s performance will also feature a medley of other traditional tunes.

Pipe Major Gillies composed the vibrant tune at the request of 2 SCOTS company commander Major Alastair Colville. ‘The Longest Reign’ marks the date – Wednesday, 09 September 2015 – that Her Majesty surpassed the milestone which her great-great-grandmother Queen Victoria had previously held. It was played for her at Balmoral Castle on that date.

The Royal Highland Fusiliers have been on Royal Guard duties on Royal Deeside for the past three months and presented Her Majesty with a copy of tune at the end of her annual summer stay. Sunday’s performance at Deeside Activity Park will be one of the final engagements that the fusiliers will carry out on Royal Deeside before returning to their barracks in Edinburgh next week.

A video of two pipers from the band performing the tune high on the hills above Ballater has been viewed nearly 80,000 times on the regiment’s Facebook page.

Organised by Visit Royal Deeside, Food and Fiddle Fortnight is an annual celebration of the area’s culinary and cultural talents and heritage.  The two-week festival draws to a close on Sunday evening, by which time more than 60 events will have been held at venues across Deeside and Donside, bringing together local food producers, businesses and musicians.

Highlights of the coming week’s programme include special daytime events and musical evenings at the Hilton Grand Vacations Club at Craigendarroch. There are live traditional music sessions at the Aberdeen Arms, Tarland, on Tuesday, 13 October and the Deeside Inn, Ballater, on Saturday, 17 October.

For walkers and those keen to learn more about the Cambus O’ May area there is a guided walk led by local historian Ian Murray on Saturday, 17 October. The walk will be punctuated with live fiddle music from Paul Anderson. Participants will then enjoy more music and a two-course dinner at Ballater’s Riverside Cottage Cafe.

The fortnight-long celebration will draw to a close with a concert performed by the Rua Macmillan Duo at the Woodend Barn, Banchory, on Sunday, 18 October. Award winning Scottish fiddler Rua Macmillan will be joined by pianist Suzanne Houston, with the duo performing a range of music from across Scotland and further afield.

Moira Gash, Visit Royal Deeside project co-ordinator, said:

“The Longest Reign is a wonderful piece of music and a fantastic way to commemorate Her Majesty’s achievement. It is very fitting that the world public premiere of the tune will take place on Royal Deeside, an area held in great affection by The Queen and her great-great-grandmother, Queen Victoria, the length of whose reign she surpassed.

“There are a number of great events still ahead this week which will appeal to all ages, especially with the school holidays starting. We are very pleased that 2 SCOTS have agreed to perform for us on Sunday afternoon at Deeside Activity Park. It is a fitting way to help bring the 2015 Food and Fiddle Fortnight to a close and also mark the end of the battalion’s time on Royal Deeside.”

To inspire visitors to explore the local area even further during Food and Fiddle Fortnight, Visit Royal Deeside has put together an A to Z of things to do and places to visit. The list highlights some of the more unusual activities on offer, including lessons in tractor driving, gliding and driving a train on part of the old Deeside line.

Food and Fiddle Fortnight takes place in venues across Royal Deeside until Sunday, 18 October. A full programme is available at www.visitroyaldeeside.com or by searching for Food and Fiddle Fortnight on Facebook.

Visit Royal Deeside is the destination management organisation established in 2005 to promote Royal Deeside, Donside and the eastern Cairngorms. The organisation works with over 100 locals businesses to enhance the quality and variety of visitor products and services, providing effective training and support where necessary.

It aims to grow tourism in the area for the benefit of locals and ensure visitors have the best possible experience to encourage return visits and recommendations to family and friends. More information is available at www.visitroyaldeeside.com.

A leading north-east cancer support charity is appealing for willing runners to take part in next year’s Run Balmoral road race after online entries opened this week.

CLAN Cancer Support is once again a nominated charity for the popular north-east event and has a number of places available for various races over the weekend.

The event this year takes place over the weekend of April 23-24, with the race programme including children’s races, the ConocoPhillips 5K and the Stena Drilling Tartan 10K run. A duathlon, 15 mile trail race and three mile trail run is also part of next year’s line-up.

The Run Balmoral launch follows the opening of early bird entries for next year’s Baker Hughes 10K race of which CLAN has been involved with for a number of years. The 2015 Baker Hughes event saw over 115 individuals lace up their running shoes to raise thousands of pounds on behalf of the charity.

Susan Crighton, CLAN’s fundraising manager, said:

“Both Run Balmoral and Baker Hughes have well and truly established themselves as two of the most popular races in the north-east running calendar and CLAN has had a proud association with them both for a number of years.

“Run Balmoral takes place in April next year and we’re looking for participants to run in either the 5K, 10L, duathlon or 15 mile trail races on our behalf. We’ve had hundreds of runners in the past take part to raise thousands of pounds for CLAN and it is this level of support that makes such a big difference to the lives of many affected by cancer throughout the north and north-east of Scotland.”

Those interested in running either race on behalf of CLAN Cancer Support are asked to contact the charity’s Darren Hill on 01224 647000 or email darren.hill@clanhouse.org for further details.

CLAN Cancer Support is an independent charity which provides comfort support and information, free of charge, for anyone, of any age, affected by any type of cancer. CLAN aims to support people to reduce anxiety, stress and to increase their ability to cope with the effects of a serious illness.

Based in Aberdeen, the charity covers the whole of north-east Scotland, Moray, Orkney and Shetland. CLAN has a presence in Ballater, Banchory, Elgin, Inverurie, Fraserburgh, Peterhead, Stonehaven, Kirkwall and Lerwick.

The Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival has become one of the leading events of its kind over the past 17 years

Speyside’s leading malt whisky producers will unite on their own doorstep for the first time – to launch a brand new ‘dramfest’ organised by the Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival.

Brand rivalries will be put to one side when Spirit of Speyside brings distillers from all over the region together under one roof in celebration of the area’s most famed product – malt whisky.

Plans for the first event – to take place in September 2016 – were unveiled at the Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival AGM on Tuesday.

It will offer an alternative weekend devoted to Speyside whisky in its home and heartland and complementing the internationally-renowned Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival held annually in May.

The September whisky weekend is being introduced to sate the public’s thirst for whisky-themed events in the area that is home to more than half of Scotland’s malt whisky distilleries.

Elgin has been chosen as the central location for this Speyside showcase, which as well as whisky, will feature other drinks – including local gin and craft beer – along with fine food and produce from the region.

The Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival has become one of the leading events of its kind over the past 17 years. It attracts thousands of visitors from all over the world to Speyside during the May Day weekend to savour a selection of more than 400 events, from tastings to ceilidhs, food pairings to comedy.

Many events are sold out within hours of tickets going on sale and accommodation in the region reaches capacity. Festival organisers could see scope to introduce a second – but distinctive – event to its annual calendar, which will allow people to celebrate Scotland’s national drink in its spiritual home without the need to plan a five-day itinerary.

The event will be held from September 9-11, 2016 at Elgin Town Hall, drawing visitors after the summer season and helping provide an economic boost for the area.

As well as tastings, cocktail making, a food court, and masterclasses will be part of the offering. Distilleries, businesses and partners will be encouraged to develop themes to add to the visitor experience.

Festival chairman James Campbell says,

“Our annual whisky festival has grown in size and stature to become one of the leading events of its kind in the world.

“We are now creating a brand new weekend event with the big difference that the distilleries will be together, under one roof, and that’s something that doesn’t normally happen on their home territory.

“We’ve chosen Elgin for the venue because it is central, with good transport links, and we’ll be encouraging businesses and other partners to get involved too. Further announcements on what people can expect from the new event, including its official title, will be made in the coming weeks and months.

“This is a great opportunity for distilleries and food and drink producers of Speyside to showcase their products and share what they do.

“While the Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival has an international audience, and overseas visitors may be among the contingent, we expect our September event to have a particular appeal to the home market, including people from the local area.

“We look forward to developing our plans and helping keep one of Scotland’s most famous whisky producing regions well and truly on the map, inspiring more visitors to develop their interest and knowledge of our national tipple.”

The Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival’s position as a major tourism attraction in Scotland was underlined again this year when it attracted 26,389 visits to events from a record 34 different countries.

The 2016 Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival – and its traditional musical arm the Spirit of Speyside Sessions – takes place from April 28 to May 2. For further information about the event visit www.spiritofspeyside.com with tickets on sale from January 2015.

The Festival is also active on social media – https://www.facebook.com/WhiskyFestival and @spirit_speyside on Twitter.

The Grampian Transport Museum will be welcoming visitors this October with a number of special activities taking place during the school holidays. With thanks to Martyn Smith.

GrampianTransportMuseumImage1A special guest exhibit will be on display in the museum from Monday 12th October.

Helping to celebrate 30 years since the original Back to the Future movie, the museum will be displaying a DeLorean DMC-12 – the car popularised in the cult movie trilogy. In the second instalment of the film the central character, Marty McFly, travels forward in time to Wednesday October 21 2015, the date our guest exhibit will then be departing on.

Alongside a standard DeLorean vehicle a number of replica props will be on display, including a detailed replica of the Hoverboard used in the movie.

These have been painstakingly re-created by Barry Thackery of Aberdeen, who has also turned his hand to creating an operational flying DeLorean, using a scale model of the movie car which has been married up to the chassis of a radio controlled drone.

Also taking place during the October break is the museum’s final rides afternoon of the season – Full Steam Ahead, which takes place on Thursday 15th October, from 1.30pm – 3.30pm.

The museum’s 1914 Sentinel Steam Waggon, the oldest fully functional Sentinel still in existence, will be offering museum visitors a ride around the outdoor circuit and will be joined by a 1:3 scale Burrell Steam traction engine, built in Ellon by blacksmith Willie Gill. The Burrell was purchased by Aberdeen City Council and was run regularly in the city’s Duthie Park, where it proved especially popular during the summer months.

A number of static displays will be on show too – a live steam 3.5” gauge Stevenson’s Rocket will be on show alongside a selection of miniature traction engines and railway locomotives.

Then the fun continues with a special Halloween Activity Afternoon on Friday 23rd, from 1pm – 3.30pm. With Halloween activities, quizzes and crafts plus face painting, balloon modelling plus the museum will also welcoming Diana from ‘Once upon a tune’ who will be providing lots of fun through song and story.

Places are still available for a leading cancer charity’s popular festive event. With thanks to Jessica Murphy, Senior Account Executive, Citrus Mix.

CLAN logo2CLAN Cancer Support’s Christmas Cracker ball has become a highlight in the north-east social calendar – and is one of the charity’s biggest fundraising events.

The seasonal event is being held on November 27 at the Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre (AECC). More than £130,000 was raised last year as individuals and businesses showed their generosity towards CLAN.

Susan Crighton, CLAN fundraising manager, said:

“The Christmas Cracker is one of our most important fundraising events, and we are all looking forward to it. Each year we are grateful for the support of the north-east public who always get behind us and turn out in droves to help make it the success it is.

“We hope this year will be no different and we are encouraging both companies and individuals to take up the remaining places for what will truly be a fantastic evening. We understand that the business climate is very challenging just now, however demand for our services continues against this backdrop. We have been taken aback by the generosity of people in the past and we hope we can rely on that kindness once more.”

The festive evening will include a drinks reception, followed by a three-course dinner, entertainment and dancing.

RoofGardenAdamWith thanks to Phil Moar, Citrus Mix.

Hosted by Bon Accord & St Nicholas, the family fun day was the first event to be held in the enhanced space and saw attendees enjoy a day of music, food and activities to mark the garden’s completion in style.

At the heart of the garden is now a children’s play area, which was made possible thanks to funding from city-based charity Aberdeen Forward.

The playground is now the focal point of the greenspace, with improved seating, lighting and flower provision also helping to breathe new life into the area.

Members of the charity, alongside representatives from Bon Accord & St Nicholas and Aberdeen Inspired as well as the Lord Provost of Aberdeen George Adam were present to open the play area as it welcomed its first children.

The attraction’s new name was also unveiled, with Glashieburn’s P4 pupil William Stewart’s suggestion of ‘The Silver City Playground’, coming out top in a competition that saw nearly 50 entries submitted from schools throughout Aberdeen.

Guests were treated to a performance and workshop from the Guarana Street Drummers and were also able to take part in a number of activities provided by craft group Busy Beasties.

The event also welcomed special guests in the shape of owls Eral and Hedwig, stars of the recent Harry Potter films, thanks to Aberdeenshire-based Owl and Pussy Cat Centre. Cupcakes and samples from YO! Sushi and Ed’s Easy Diner were also available on the day.

Craig Stevenson, manager of Bon Accord & St Nicholas, said:

“Saturday’s fun day really helped shine a spotlight on some of the new features of the roof garden and it was great to see so many happy faces join us for the celebration.

“The play area has already proved in its first day that it will be a great addition to the space, providing an outdoor area for children within the city centre; something that this part of Aberdeen simply didn’t have before.

“The hard work and dedication shown by all the partners within this project is commendable and we’re pleased that initial feedback on the garden has been positive. Aberdeen now has an enhanced event space right at the heart of its city centre and we look forward to welcoming people to the garden throughout the months to come.”

Kath Deans, landfill community fund officer at Aberdeen Forward/CFINE, said:

“We were thrilled to be involved with the roof garden project and I hope the play area is enjoyed by children for many years to come.

“This was an important project for Aberdeen Forward, which is currently in the process of merging with CFINE. It’s our aim to find worthwhile projects that will benefit from funding sourced through landfill community tax and to have this new play area at the heart of the city is a major positive for Aberdeen.”

With thanks to Kenny Hutchison, Parliamentary Assistant to Dr. Eilidh Whiteford MP.

Eilidh Whiteford, Parliament [2015]feat

SNP MP Dr Eilidh Whiteford has written to Scottish Secretary David Mundell seeking confirmation that the UK Government will amend the Scotland Bill to devolve complete control over Universal Credit – after he promised the power to top up tax credits would be given to the Scottish Parliament through the Scotland Bill.

Mr Mundell said on Good Morning Scotland yesterday that the Scottish Parliament would have the ability to “adjust tax credits” or “top-up tax credits”.

As working tax credits and child tax credits are now part of Universal Credit, which is already being rolled out across the country, the only way the Scottish Parliament would be able to do this fairly and simply, and without having to ask the permission of the DWP, would be through complete control of Universal Credit.

Commenting, Dr Eilidh Whiteford MP, the SNP’s Social Justice spokesperson said:

“The Scotland Bill in its current form limits the ability of the Scottish Government to use the additional powers it proposes and retains vetoes for UK Government ministers. Scotland needs more powers over social security to tackle poverty, inequality and help those who need support the most.

“350,000 children in Scotland will be badly hit by the tax credit changes coming into force, and we want the power in Scotland to pull children and families out of poverty.

“This can only be done if we have full control over Universal Credit.

“Mr Mundell voted against the removal of the Secretary of State veto on changes to the Universal Credit, voted against powers to create new benefits, and voted against the devolution of Housing Benefit which is an element of Universal Credit – but now he says that Scotland should have the power to adjust tax credits.

“Overwhelmingly, civic Scotland has said that social security powers should be in the hands of Scotland to allow us to protect children and low income families. The Secretary of State now needs to put up or shut up and show us the amendments they are planning.”

Simeon Care Home exterior

The Simeon Care Home has received a ‘moving in’ gift from Aberdeen Asset Management in the shape of a donation towards the purchase of furnishings.

With thanks to Esther Green, Tricker PR.

Simeon Care for the Elderly in Aberdeen has received its first ‘moving in’ present as residents settle into their new care facility.

The charity has been given a £7,000 grant from the Aberdeen Asset Management Charitable Foundation, which will be used towards purchasing new furniture for Simeon House.

The donation caps off an exciting time for Simeon, with 23 residents having now moved into the brand new Simeon House in Aberdeen.

The  home was built after the charity launched the biggest fundraising drive in its history, raising nearly £1.3 million. Built on land at Cairnlee Road and designed by Camphill Architects, it features dementia-friendly design, including an innovative Golden Garden which provides a therapeutic haven for residents, and a commitment to energy efficient technology.

Gayle Johnston, Simeon Care for the Elderly’s fundraising manager, said:

“It is fantastic for everyone at Simeon to finally be in our new home. It has been a long process to get to this point and it means a great deal to all of us.

“This generous grant from the Aberdeen Asset Management Charitable Foundation has been the icing on the cake and helped us kit out our home in style.

“We are also grateful for their support earlier this year as a group of employees kindly volunteered in our garden. It is efforts like this that make all the difference to us as a charity.

“After just a week, the residents are settling in well and very much enjoying the new home and Golden Garden.

“We are delighted our vision is now a reality. We would like to give a heartfelt thanks to everyone who has supported us since we launched our New Lease of Life fundraising campaign to bring in money to create our dream home.  It has been a challenging journey but the kindness and generous support of individuals, local businesses, charitable trusts and community groups has got us here.”

The daughter of a 93 year old elderly resident with dementia explained how the environs and staff ensure that the care facility home-from-home feel.

“It feels like home and the staff are always patient and attentive. They understand mum’s past and they let her do things that are purposeful, like help fold the laundry. Each night they put my mum’s hair rollers in because they understand how important that simple thing is to her peace of mind. Taking the route of residential care can be seen in our society as the family failing the elderly.

“However, with the care that mum receives at Simeon, I feel that both our lives are enriched and our relationship preserved. I would be happy there myself at that age”.

Dominic Kite, of the Aberdeen Asset Management Charitable Foundation, said: “The opening of the new home is a major milestone for Simeon Care for the Elderly, boosting its capacity and allowing it to enhance its service. At this momentous time for Simeon, we’re pleased to have delivered them a moving in gift in the shape of a donation towards furnishing the new facility.”

The Aberdeen Asset Charitable Foundation was established in 2012 to formalise and develop the Group’s charitable giving globally. The Foundation seeks partnerships with smaller charities around the world, where funds can be seen to have a meaningful and measurable impact and the firm encourages its employees to use their time and skills to support its charitable projects. 1. Hector by David Gooderson Directed by Kate Nelson L.R Steven Duffy (Hector) Gowan Calder (Christina) Photo credit Peter Dibdin Photographer 2With thanks to Liz Smith.

The Scottish Premiere of Hector, a co-production between Eden Court, Comar and Ed Littlewood Production, opens on Wednesday 21 October at Eden Court, Inverness, followed by an extensive Scottish tour and concludes with two performances at the Ambassadors Theatre, London in December. Aberdeen’s Lemon Tree will host the production on Tuesday October 27.

The play tells the story of a crofter’s son, Hector MacDonald, who became a Knight of the Realm and Queen Victoria’s favourite general.

Kate Nelson directs and Steven Duffy plays Scottish legend and fallen hero Sir Hector MacDonald and features a stellar cast including  Gowan Calder, Stevie Hannan, Raj Ghatak, Valentine Hanson and  Kevin Lennon.

The Composer and Sound Designer is Pippa Murphy, Artist in Residence at the Scottish Parliament, set design is by Ali Maclaurin and lighting design by Simon Wilkinson.

Based on new and extensive research Hector reveals the true story of “Fighting Mac”, Sir Hector MacDonald, and is an exploration of the elitist English class system, the poisonous influence of rumour and gossip and the devastating power of the global press.

Rising from humble beginnings, MacDonald was the son of a crofter, born and raised on the Black Isle to Gaelic speaking, Presbyterian parents. After briefly working as an apprentice to a draper, he joined the army and rose through the ranks to become an NCO.

As a result of distinguished service during the Second Afghan War he was offered either the Victoria Cross or a commission. Unusually he took the commission and eventually rose to the rank of Major General. He was knighted in 1901. Following his appointment as Commander of Ceylon, allegations of scandalous liaisons surfaced, and he was forced to return home under a cloud.

Sir Hector MacDonald is buried in Edinburgh, as are his wife and son. He did not have a military funeral and despite the efforts of his family to have a private burial, 30,000 people turned out to pay their respects. Today, in Scotland,  he is still considered a hero and a statue to commemorate his memory was erected in Dingwall in 1907 and an annual service of thanksgiving and remembrance for his life of is still celebrated in Malbuie, his birth place.

Was he guilty? Or was he the victim of a plot fabricated by an English Establishment to remove a Gaelic-speaking upstart who got above himself? The only way to find out is to book now for an evening packed with suspense, tension and drama.

Hector is a new production of So Great a Crime, originally developed at the Finborough Theatre in 2013

Hector is supported by Creative Scotland
