A leading north-east cancer support charity is appealing for willing runners to take part in next year’s Run Balmoral road race after online entries opened this week.

CLAN Cancer Support is once again a nominated charity for the popular north-east event and has a number of places available for various races over the weekend.

The event this year takes place over the weekend of April 23-24, with the race programme including children’s races, the ConocoPhillips 5K and the Stena Drilling Tartan 10K run. A duathlon, 15 mile trail race and three mile trail run is also part of next year’s line-up.

The Run Balmoral launch follows the opening of early bird entries for next year’s Baker Hughes 10K race of which CLAN has been involved with for a number of years. The 2015 Baker Hughes event saw over 115 individuals lace up their running shoes to raise thousands of pounds on behalf of the charity.

Susan Crighton, CLAN’s fundraising manager, said:

“Both Run Balmoral and Baker Hughes have well and truly established themselves as two of the most popular races in the north-east running calendar and CLAN has had a proud association with them both for a number of years.

“Run Balmoral takes place in April next year and we’re looking for participants to run in either the 5K, 10L, duathlon or 15 mile trail races on our behalf. We’ve had hundreds of runners in the past take part to raise thousands of pounds for CLAN and it is this level of support that makes such a big difference to the lives of many affected by cancer throughout the north and north-east of Scotland.”

CLAN Landmark Walk

Aberdeen was a sea of purple as hundreds of walkers put their best foot forward in support of a leading north-east cancer charity.
More than 500 people took part in CLAN Cancer Support’s Landmark Walk on Sunday, September 27, tackling one of two routes of 13 miles and 7.8 miles, to take in a number of prominent landmarks throughout Aberdeen.

The event was officially started by Lord Provost councillor George Adam as participants set off in their droves from the city’s Westburn Park to tackle the trail.

Now in its third year, the event was again generously supported by commercial law firm Bond Dickinson as walkers took in a number of the Granite City’s most famous sites including King’s College, St Machar Cathedral and Pittodrie.

The charity also called on the help of more than 300 volunteers who provided vital support both before and after the fundraiser as well as marshalling the route itself.

With sponsorships and donations still arriving, the event is on course to match last year’s eventual total of £50,000 which will go towards the charity’s provision of free support services to anyone affected by cancer across the north-east of Scotland, Moray, Orkney and Shetland.

Susan Crighton, CLAN’s fundraising manager, said:

“This is our third Landmark Walk event and it’s always quite something to see the sea of purple leave Westburn Park to tackle the routes in support of CLAN.

“From the walkers to the volunteers to the supporters on the streets, each and every one of you has helped make a difference to those affected by cancer in the north and north-east of Scotland and for that we simply cannot thank you enough.

“The donations are still flooding in so we’re still a bit away from knowing a grand total at this stage but we’re definitely on course to raise £50,000 which is a truly fantastic total and testament to the hard work and dedication shown by all those involved.”

Award-winning conservation charity Trees for Life is running a new project to develop high-quality conservation volunteering opportunities for young people, thanks to a grant of £20,000 from the ScottishPower Foundation.

Those benefitting from the initiative include students from Aberdeen University, Peterborough Open Awards Centre, Glasgow University and Leicestershire’s Brooksby Melton College.

“This generous grant from ScottishPower Foundation is excellent news for the Caledonian Forest and its rare species, and for dozens of young people who will be able to study and carry out practical hands-on conservation work – including the establishment of native woodlands and managing land for wildlife,” said Alan Watson Featherstone, Trees for Life’s Executive Director.

“The funding will enable us to make our project accessible to the widest range of young people – particularly those facing disadvantages and financial barriers to participation.”

Ann Loughrey, Trustee and Executive Officer at the ScottishPower Foundation, said:

“The ScottishPower Foundation is committed to supporting community programmes that inspire young people to get more out of life, whilst giving something back to their local community.

“Through the Trees for Life initiative, the young people involved will gain practical skills that will support their career ambitions, as well as valuable life skills. We are delighted to support Trees for Life and wish all the young people involved every success for the future.”

The project will benefit 70 young people aged 18-25 years old during 2015. Through both week-long courses and long-term volunteering placements, the young people will be able to develop new skills and strengthen their employability.

Activities will include the planting of native trees and plants to expand woodland habitat, collecting and propagating seeds in a specialised tree nursery at Trees for Life’s acclaimed Dundreggan Conservation Estate near Loch Ness, and carrying out biodiversity surveys.

Although only a fraction of the former Caledonian Forest now survives, Trees for Life volunteers have helped to plant more than one million trees at dozens of locations across the Highlands, and to create 10,000 acres of new forest. The charity has pledged to establish one million more trees by planting and natural regeneration by 2018.

Staff from the Aberdeen office of Lloyd’s Register pulled on their walking boots recently and completed a 26-mile walk in aid of local children’s charity Cash for Kids.
A 26-strong team from the global engineering, technical and business services organisation took part in the Aberdeen Kiltwalk, which saw them walk from the city’s Duthie Park along the Deeside Way to Potarch.

In the process the group raised over £4,800 for Cash for Kids, which supports sick, disabled and disadvantaged children and young people living in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire.

This was the second successive year that a team from Lloyd’s Register had taken on the Aberdeen Kiltwalk. Nineteen staff completed the route last year and encouraged others to participate this year.

The team was inspired to complete the walk in aid of Cash for Kids after learning about the work the charity does to support young people living in the region. Both the walk and the charity fit with Lloyd’s Register’s values of supporting local children’s charities, encouraging team building and promoting health and well-being. Staff took the opportunity to strengthen relationships with staff in the firm’s other Aberdeen offices by including them in their team.

In total the group raised over £7,700, with £2,900 being distributed amongst the event’s other charity partners.

Dressed in kilts and tartan tutus, the group encountered mixed weather on their fundraising stroll. It was warm throughout, and although they basked in some sunshine they did endure heavy downpours of rain and hail. Each team member took an estimated 58,000 steps to cover the distance, with some picking up blisters along the way, caused either by poorly chosen socks or footwear.

Jason Harris, senior integrity engineer, Lloyd’s Register, said:

“I came up with the idea of participating in the Kiltwalk in 2014 and roped in a large group of colleagues to take on the challenge. It was such a fantastic experience that I jumped at the chance of participating again in 2015. The aim was to put together an even bigger squad and surpass the phenomenal amount of money we raised last year, which we did.

“My walking partner for the majority of the day, Stuart Murdo, and I were first from our team to cross the finish line in a time of six hours and 26 minutes. The final member of the LR Kiltwalk team that I had ‘willingly assembled’ completed the route 10 hours and 9 minutes after setting off from Duthie Park.

“As we sat in the park at Potarch, enjoying the live music with some well-earned refreshments, comparing our aches and blisters whilst watching walkers finish the event, it started to hit home with everyone what a fantastic achievement we had made as a collective team.

“The incredible fundraising efforts through sponsorship and events supported by the local LR office for Cash for Kids made every painful mile worthwhile.  Motivating us along the route were pictures of the children that the money raised would be directly helping.  It spurred us all on and will do so when we take on the challenge again in 2016.”

Cash for Kids charity manager Michelle Ferguson said:

“This was a fantastic effort by all of the Lloyd’s Register team.  Walking 26 miles in one go is no mean feat, and resulted in blisters, sore feet and aching joints. The sense of achievement in completing the walk and the knowledge of how much they had raised will no doubt have soothed their aliments for a short while.

“It is the individuals and groups that take on challenges such as the Aberdeen Kiltwalk which plays an important role in the charitable sector. This donation of over £4,800 to Cash for Kids could either help to fund intensive physiotherapy for a child with cerebral palsy, purchase equipment for children to use at a community skatepark, or buy a specialist bed for a disabled child.”

Cash for Kids is Northsound Radio’s listeners’ charity. It makes grants to individuals, families, children’s groups, organisations and projects throughout the Northsound transmission area. All money is raised locally and spent locally to benefit local disabled and disadvantaged children and young people under 18.

All things purple will be the name of the game this month as a leading north-east cancer charity urges people to adopt the colour in its support. With thanks to Phil Moar, Account Manager, Citrus Mix.

CLAN pic2Singer songwriter Prince may have made it famous but purple is also at the heart of CLAN Cancer Support and it is encouraging individuals, businesses, schools and groups to get involved with its annual fund and awareness raising event.
Go Purple for CLAN is held throughout September every year and sees people throughout north and north-east Scotland adopt the colour for a day.

From lighting up a building, wearing purple and planning a purple party to dyeing your hair, selling purple cakes and creating a purple window or reception display in your business or shop, there is no shortage of innovative ways in which people can get involved.

The month-long event was first held in 2013 as part of the charity’s 30th anniversary celebrations, with schools across the region, as well as Marischal College turning purple in support.

Due to its popularity, the colourful day has become a main stay in the charity’s event calendar and Susan Crighton, CLAN’s fundraising manager, is encouraging people to take part.

She said:

“We’re looking for people to pick a date in September and show their support to CLAN. This could be in any shape from having a wear it purple day to holding a special purple only bake sale – the opportunities are endless.

“We’re looking for individuals, businesses, groups and schools to get involved and we’ve already had a number of places sign up to take part. Of course, there is a fundraising element to the month-long event but it is a really important awareness raiser for us as we want as many people as possible, throughout the areas we have a presence within, to be aware of CLAN and the services it can offer.

“Our own wellbeing centres, including CLAN House in Aberdeen, as well as our range of shops will also be taking part, with a range of purple items and clothing being stocked which could be a help to those looking to take part in their own business or school.

“This is one of our most fun organised events and gives people the chance to make a difference to the lives of those affected by cancer in the north and north-east of Scotland.”

Players and members of Aberdeenshire RFC have come together to raise donations for local charity Instant Neighbour.
The Woodside club has been collecting items throughout the last month and has managed to raise a grand total of 202kg of bric-a-brac and 17kg of food which will go towards supporting those in need in and around Aberdeen.

Aberdeenshire RFC club president Alasdair Farquharson said:

“I’d like to thank all those players, both past and present, and members of the club who have come together to generously support our efforts in helping Instant Neighbour.

“To raise such a fantastic total really is testament to the efforts shown throughout the last month and it is great to be able to help a charity that is located in the community that we play out of. It really is our way of giving something back to the local area.”

“This is excellent and will certainly help us in our quest to support those hit by poverty.”

Among other charitable endeavours, a group of players, friends and family of the club volunteered in last weekend’s Celebrate Aberdeen parade, lending a helping hand to the North East Disabled War Veterans.

The parade itself saw thousands of people take to the streets of Aberdeen to celebrate the tireless work of the city’s third sector organisations in a display of colour and fun.

Now, the club will turn its attention to this Saturday’s opening league game as the 1st XV face a repeat of last season’s opening fixture when they travel to Fife to take on Kirkcaldy RFC.
Aberdeenshire RFC are a BT National League Division 2 side situated in the north of Aberdeen.

In addition to the club’s three senior teams, Aberdeenshire has a burgeoning ladies and junior team.

The inaugural Mud Madness Aberdeen Event will take place at Lochter Activity Centre just north of the city on Saturday 24th October 2015, where participants will tackle a challenging course over the natural landscape and obstacles Lochter has to offer.
Mud Madness aims to cater for the whole family and will be offering 3km and 5km courses guaranteed to put a smile on your face.

Hospital corners will be the order of the day when a new competition is held in Aberdeen next month. The city is to play host to the inaugural Scottish Bed Making Championship on Thursday, 06 August.

The brainchild of local children’s charity Cash for Kids, the event forms part of its fundraising efforts for this year’s Bed Appeal.

The appeal, which officially launched earlier this month, aims to provide underprivileged children in north-east Scotland with a bed of their own and local disabled youngsters with specialist beds.

The charity hopes this year’s Bed Appeal will raise around £25,000 to purchase beds for more than 100 local underprivileged and disabled children.

The Scottish Bed Making Championship will be staged at Kingswells’ Village Urban Resort and is expected to attract entries from hotels, guest houses, care providers and hospitals in north-east Scotland.

Teams of four will be challenged to make a double bed – fitting sheets, pillow slips and duvet covers – as quickly as possible, before then making a bed which will be judged on its presentation. Points will be awarded for each task, with the two highest scoring teams then taking part in a bed race to be crowned Scottish Bed Making Champions.  The winners will also win a corporate bowling night courtesy of Codona’s.

Cash for Kids charity manager Michele Binnie said:

“We are very excited to be launching the Scottish Bed Making Championship, which will be an important part of the 2015 Bed Appeal. The appeal highlights the issues of poverty and disability that families here in the north-east are facing.

“The championship is open to any team that wants to show off its bed making prowess, whether they’re from the hospitality and care industries or another sector entirely. “The championship is not just about making a bed quickly, but also presenting it well. The judges will be looking for crisp hospital corners and well plumped pillows. It will no doubt be a fun and competitive event, and one that we hope our hospitality colleagues across the north-east, and further afield, will get behind.”

A sold out 80s themed evening has brought in thousands of pounds for a leading north-east charity.
Revellers travelled back in time at the event in aid of Mental Health Aberdeen (MHA) and transformed themselves into a host of 80s characters from Michael Jackson and Madonna to Freddie Mercury and the Ghostbusters.

Organiser Laura Emslie and her sister-in-law Suzanne Carry were delighted that the event proved so popular, raising more than £5,000 for MHA, which provides support services, counselling and advice to people related to mental health and wellbeing.

Laura said:

“The evening went amazingly well and everyone had a fantastic time. Our aim was to get people talking about mental health issues and of course to raise as much money as we could for MHA. We were absolutely delighted with the final fundraising amount, especially as this is the first time we have ever done anything like this.

“MHA is a fantastic charity that does so much to help people and it is a cause I am passionate about supporting. We had 300 people there on the night and quite a few came up to us to ask if we would be doing it again next year, which we took as a great compliment.”

All funds from the ticket sales were donated to MHA along with proceeds from a raffle and auction which was held during the evening.

Fiona Mooney, MHA’s fundraising and marketing manager, said:

“Laura and Suzanne really surpassed themselves by organising such a fantastic evening and everyone enjoyed getting the opportunity to dress up. We were thrilled with the amount raised which will help us tremendously.

“There is a huge demand on our services in Aberdeen, and our aim is of course to help as many people as we can. However, in order to meet this, we need to ensure we are in a position to provide the support they need, and kind efforts like this help us work towards achieving that.”

Founded in 1950, MHA offers a range of resources which include emotional and practical support, information and advice, support with helping overcoming social isolation, links and access to other community resources as well as activities promoting mental wellbeing.

Based in Aberdeen, MHA has centres throughout the north-east in towns including Aboyne, Banff, Ellon, Peterhead and Inverurie.

The organisation was among the first to provide community care – with its first residential project, a group home for discharged psychiatric patients, opened more than 35 years ago. MHA has also been providing day services continuously for over 60 years.

A major campaign that has the potential to change lives by providing underprivileged children in north-east Scotland with a bed of their own and local disabled youngsters with specialist beds has been launched by Cash for Kids.
Now in its third year, the charity’s month-long Bed Appeal aims to raise £25,000 to purchase beds for more than 100 children living in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire.

The appeal was officially launched on Saturday at John Lewis in Aberdeen.

The Aberdeen-based charity has provided over 260 beds as a result of its two previous appeals. This has included specialist beds for disabled children. One such child that Cash for Kids has supported is Rhys Munro.

The five-year-old from Banchory is blind and has epilepsy, and also suffers from severe reflux and poor trunk control. Due to his condition he lacks mobility and requires a safe and secure place to sleep and spend time during the day.

Having outgrown his cot, his family applied to Cash for Kids for assistance to purchase a specialist, fully-adjustable £4,500 bed for the youngster. The bed is fitted with protective sides to prevent Rhys rolling out and hurting himself. It can also be raised or lowered electronically, allowing it to meet his changing needs and those of his carers.

His mum, Sarah Newman, said:

“The support we have had from Cash for Kids has been brilliant. The bed was very expensive and I never thought we would get funding to cover the total cost.  I was absolutely elated when I found out they would cover the total cost. This fully-adjustable bed is future-proof, which is a massive weight off our shoulders.

“Rhys’s condition means he will never be able to sleep in a normal bed as he could roll out, so a specialist bed was needed. A bed is a basic thing, but for us it ticks so many boxes. This bed is life-changing. Not only is it somewhere comfortable for Rhys to sleep, but it doubles up as a place we can change him, so being able to electronically adjust the height of the bed to suit the carer is important.

“Rhys would probably spend most of his day in his bed. He absolutely loves it. Because of his disabilities he doesn’t have mobility and isn’t able to run about like normal children, so the bed is somewhere he spend time during the day listening to music or audio books and we know he is safe and secure.

“Donations to the Bed Appeal can make a massive difference to people on your doorstep. A bed seems like a simple thing, but for certain children it is a vital, basic need and can be life-changing.”

Cash for Kids provides grant funding to families, children’s groups and associations across the region on a quarterly basis. It is once again running the appeal in response to a large number of applications from families to help fund a bed for their child.

The charity is again working with Aberdeen mattress, divan and furniture manufacturer and supplier Glencraft. The bed firm, which operates as a social enterprise, will supply beds to Cash for Kids at a reduced rate.

Michele Binnie, Cash for Kids charity manager, said:

“We continue to be surprised by the number of applications we receive from families seeking funding to purchase beds for their children. Cash for Kids’ Bed Appeal not only aims to ensure these children get a good night’s sleep, but also improve their health and quality of life.

“With this year’s Bed Appeal we hope to provide greater support to families with disabled children. As we have seen with Rhys, specialist beds are vital for these children and their families. Although the bed costs a considerable amount, it has a transformational impact on their lives. The smallest of donations to the Bed Appeal can make a large, positive impact on children’s lives here in the north-east.”

Cash for Kids is calling on the north-east public to get behind its Bed Appeal, which runs throughout July. The charity is encouraging people to wear their slippers to work for a month, organise breakfast bake sales and hold pyjama or onesie to work days.
