The Oxjam Music Festival is really hitting a note across Aberdeen.  With just over a month remaining till the big day, activities are starting to pick up with a view to raising funds and awareness for Oxfam.

Having already generated over £1,000 in the city through events such as a music quiz and a guitar hero tournament confidence is high for breaking targets in the run up to the festival, titled “The Takeover”.

Taking place on the 23rd of October, the festival will showcase some of the top artists from across the city with 25 bands performing across five stages.  Headlining The Tunnels will be Weather Barn and Le Reno Amps with both acts hugely popular with music fans in the north east.  The Wildcards and Kashmir Red will rock Cafe Drummonds while Jo McCafferty and The Kitchen Cynics will bring ambience to Enigma.  Finally, local favourites The Lorelei and Gerry Jablonski and his Electric Band will light up the Blue Lamp.

Oxjam Music Programmer Shawn Skinner declared “We are absolutely delighted with the quality of acts we have playing The Takeover and feel there is something for everyone.  We aimed to capture a cross section of the music scene in Aberdeen and believe we have that.  We’ve booked some local big hitters, renowned acoustic acts, blues and folk bands for a party atmosphere and encapsulated the spirit of rock and roll.  The best part is we can make a difference to people’s lives by listening to some of our favourite bands.  It’s incredible to think that around a billion people in the world don’t have access to clean water and while we can’t rectify this issue, we can certainly attempt to raise awareness and play our part in changing it.”

Tickets can be bought for £5 and provide unlimited access to each stage.  Hopes are high that each venue will be full to deliver a night to remember with every penny going to Oxfam with the money used to fight poverty and climate change.  A little money can go along way as, for instance, £429 is enough money to build a library and fill it with books and £720 can supply clean water for a village of 800 people.

At present the Aberdeen team at Oxjam have already raised enough funds for both of these initiatives.  Those attending The Takeover can also take part in “signing” a visual petition by having their pictures taken with the Oxfam “Fair Deal” handstamp with the photographs being put together in a collage and sent to world leaders.  Tickets for The Takeover can be bought at One Up on Belmont Street and at www.wegottickets.com.

Pittodrie Stadium will be the venue for a fund-raising charity quiz night next week in aid of MacMillan Cancer Support. Organisers hope to raise over £1000 at the event which is one of several taking place locally on Friday 24th September.

There will also be coffee mornings at Storybook Glen and at Marks and Spencers stores in St Nicholas Centre and Union Square.

Tickets for the quiz night, which begins at 7.30pm, cost £10- this includes a stovie supper and two raffle tickets- and are available from charityquiznights@gmail.com.

This event coincides with ‘The Worlds’ Biggest Coffee Morning’ – MacMillan Cancer Support’s biggest fundraising event. People from all over the UK and beyond will be holding coffee mornings, and donations on the day will be forwarded to MacMillan.

M&S Café are the charity’s new official partner, and have been running special promotions since early August to raise funds for MacMillan. On 24th September M&S Café will donate 50p for every coffee sold.

Last year’s coffee morning helped raise an amazing £7.9 million for people living with cancer.

In the last issue, we focussed on events set around the closure of Choices day care centre. With gratitude to carer David Forbes for his contribution, Fred Wilkinson continues his series of articles.

Firstly, I must apologise, as due to illness, and a few thorny legal issues, I was unable to finish the article I hoped to present this week. However, from the closure of Choices to the ongoing work of the Future Choices charity, I doubt if we will ever be short of a story.

In the process of gathering information for previous articles, I was offered the opportunity to attend a Future Choices committee meeting. Having had very little contact with Choices’ former users in more than two years, this invitation was most welcome. As well as a chance to catch up with old buddies it was a chance to witness first hand how the group were faring, and what avenues and opportunities were being pursued.

It was an afternoon of mixed emotions. I was made to feel extremely welcome at the home of group chairman Kevin McCahery and greeted warmly by all who arrived. However, as I caught up with their news, I was also updated on behalf of others I would, sadly, never have the chance to meet again.

As they conducted their business, and exchanged humour in between, it was extremely reassuring to realise that their resolve was very much intact, and the friendships between those present were as strong as ever. Also uncompromised by time was the residual anger, which surfaced occasionally. This anger directed towards particular sections and individuals within Aberdeen City Council may yet subside, but it is clear that it will take more than time for their contempt to be replaced by trust. Altogether the uncomfortable subtext was a message – that the closure of Choices, and how it has affected group members, was unforgivable.

I thought it was an awful wind up, but when the news bulletin came on the TV, my heart sank

Present at the meeting was David Forbes. Mr Forbes’ mother previously attended Choices and he clearly remembers the heartbreak experienced by all involved with the Day Centre.

“I’ll never forget in all my life. I got a call from my mum’s Day Centre informing me that Aberdeen City Council had decided to axe it due to their massive cutbacks. How do you tell your disabled mum; who loved going to the centre to keep active, see her friends, and learn new skills, that she could not go anymore?”

Mr Forbes chose to sum up his feelings around that time in two words.

“Emotional Hell.

“Strangely I thought it was an awful wind up, but when the news bulletin came on the TV, my heart sank as I accepted it was very real.

“I was 26, and caring full time for my mum who suffers from memory loss due to severe brain damage following a heart attack.”

The impact of closure affected many in addition to the service users. A secondary function of Choices was, that in providing day care to disabled individuals, their families and carers like Mr Forbes could enjoy periods of respite, enabling them to work or otherwise focus on their own personal needs and interests, and their personal and professional relationships with countless others.

“On the very last day of the Centre closing, it was very difficult personally for me to witness many disabled people, including my mum, crying and comforting each other. It made me realise how vital the service was to the local community.

The hard work was worth it and the fight to press on is bigger than ever!

“My mum and I have built up very good friendships with the people who used the service. We worked as a team and helped the other users to protest against the axing of the centre, with marches, petitions, media interviews, even lobbying Parliament …sadly all failed.”

But rather than just lie down and accept defeat, users and supporters including Mr Forbes pulled together to form Future Choices – a charity whose primary aim is to do what Choices did for the users – helping the local disabled community of Aberdeen live their lives as they should be allowed to do.

As I observed the meeting in progress and contributed where I could, I wondered if in some perverse way the cruel loss of Choices, and the fight to win back that sense of belonging has made the group stronger. They are still some considerable way from having in place what they aim for, but I feel a real sense of momentum in the group and a sense of pride – assets which give the group huge appeal.

Mr Forbes confirms this observation.

“The Charity is now up and running with new members being added regularly, and with loyal supporters and lots of future fundraising events in the pipeline, the future for Future Choices will hopefully be brighter.”

“The Question that I ask myself everyday when I see and do work with the Charity is where would we be now if we didn’t pull together as a strong team?

“And then when I turn to my mum and remind her she can still see her friends these days, it suddenly becomes clear. The hard work was worth it and the fight to press on is bigger than ever!

The meeting rolls on at a pleasant pace. The group are as always glad to be together, so no decisions are hurried, and the hard edges and painful memories are outweighed by the many, shared experiences they still laugh heartily about. Much as I share the desire to stay on and enjoy their fantastic company, I realise an hour has passed since I announced with apologies that I had to be heading home, and so I leave fortified with optimism that Future Choices are moving forward, and I pity anyone who dares to stand in their way.

David Forbes has organised a dinner dance event at the Hilton Treetops, Aberdeen on 13th November.
Tickets are £30 which includes live entertainment, a welcome drink, and a 3 course meal.

WHAT IS DEMOCRACY? a video installation by Oliver Reesler “What is democracy?” is not one question, but two. On the one hand, the question relates to conditions of the current, parliamentary representative democracies that are scrutinized critically in this project. On the other hand, the question traces different approaches to what a more democratic system might look like and which organizational forms it could take. The project asked “What is democracy?” to activists and political analysts in 18 cities around the world, resulting in a multiplicity of different perspectives and viewpoints. Musicians in Aberdeen play their part in the UK’s biggest ever charity music festival

Local bands are set to take to the stage in support of Oxfam next month as part of Oxjam, the UK’s biggest music festival. On the 23rd of October, the Oxjam Takeover festival will see around 25 acts play across five stages in the city centre with all proceeds going to fight poverty around the world.

The show forms part of Oxjam’s Month of Music which runs through the whole of October. Oxjam is a festival with a difference.: Thousands of fundraising music events are put on by ordinary people – from large-scale festivals to local sponsored busks – making it the biggest line-up of any music festival in the UK.

Among the artists playing include Weather Barn, Le Reno Amps, Jo McCafferty, The Wildcards, Gerry Jablonski, The Deportees, The Kitchen Cynics and Turning Thirteen. For just £5, wristbands for the event can be purchased allowing access to any of the stages in The Tunnels, Cafe Drummonds, Enigma and The Blue Lamp.

Laura Darnell, regional manager for Oxjam Aberdeen, said:

“We’re really excited to be playing our part in making Aberdeen part of a month-long musical celebration right across the country. Even more importantly, this gig is all about showing that the best in local music can have a global impact too – for example, just £7 could feed a family, and £10 can buy five bags of seeds. So everyone who comes along can rest assured that as well as having a great time, they’ll be helping to change lives around the world too.”

During October, more than 950 venues, 2,000 volunteers, 6,000 bands and musicians and 135,000 audience members nationwide will enable Oxjam to raise £500,000 to help Oxfam fight poverty.

It’s exciting to think that anyone can get involved and every single gig will help to raise loads of money to change lives around the world

Since 2006, more than 36,000 musicians have played to an audience of over 750,000 people at almost 3,000 Oxjam events, raising in excess of £1.2 million to fight poverty around the world. Oxjam 2010 is expected to take the total past £1.5 million, enough to buy safe water for 1.6 million people, 750,000 bags of seeds or 60,000 goats.

From 27th to 30th September, a diverse range of the biggest names in music, including pop princess Diana Vickers, Razorlight frontman Johnny Borrell, and Britpop legends The Charlatans performed their most unusual shows to date – inside an Oxfam shop – as the official launch events for the Oxjam month of music.

Former X-Factor star Diana Vickers, who headlined the Oxfam shop show on 28th September, said:

“The best thing is that everyone who takes part – from singers like me to musicians, promoters and audience members – is the real star of Oxjam. It’s exciting to think that anyone can get involved and every single gig will help to raise loads of money to change lives around the world.”

Razorlight frontman Johnny Borrell, whose new band performed for Oxjam, said:

“Our gig is only the beginning of a movement of thousands of gigs, club nights and events right across the country, all raising money to fight poverty. ”

In the lead up to the festival, there will be a campaign night held at The Belmont Cinema on the 15th September between 6pm to 8pm. Campaigners from Oxfam along with representatives from the Aberdeen team will be present to answer questions and demonstrate what funds will be going towards.

To find out what Oxjam events are going on in Aberdeen and the full line-up for the Takeover festival visit www.oxfam.org.uk/oxjam. Tickets can be bought at www.wegottickets.com and donations made at www.justgiving.com/oxjamaberdeen.

Oxjam Takeover events take place on 23rd & 24th October in the following locations:

Aberdeen, Bath, Birmingham, Bournemouth, Brecon, Brighton, Bristol, Canterbury, Cardiff, Coventry, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Guildford, Huddersfield, Leeds, Leicester, Liverpool, London (Brixton, Leadenhall Market, Brick Lane, Kilburn, Kingston), Manchester, Neath, Newcastle, Nottingham, Sheffield, Southampton, Stirling, Stoke-on-Trent and Wiltshire.

  • More than 600 Oxfam shops across the country sell second-hand music – double the total number of independent record shops in the UK*.
  • Oxfam shops sell around £6 million of music every year, which equates to around 1.8 million CDs and records every year, all donated by the British public. The largest single donation was of 4,000 vinyl albums to an Oxfam shop in Devon in 2008.
  • Oxfam has been one of the lead charities at Glastonbury since 1993, raising £2.7 million through stewarding the festival and signing up more than 400,000 people in support of its campaigns at the festival. Oxfam works at seventeen music festivals across the summer, stewarding, campaigning and selling festival fashion.

With thanks to the Aberdeen Branch of SPSC.

On Saturday 18th September, the Aberdeen branch of Scottish Palestine Solidarity Campaign (SPSC) are going to walk a 40km route along the Aberdeenshire coast – a distance equivalent to the length of the coastline of the Gaza Strip.

This walk is to draw attention to the fact that 1.5 million Palestinians live in a strip of land so small that it can easily be walked in about 10 hours, that they are virtual prisoners, denied the right to trade by land or sea, to have access to employment or education, or even to receive basic humanitarian aid.

Starting at Portlethen at 7:45am those taking part will follow the Aberdeenshire Coastal Path as far as Newburgh. The route will pass through Cove, round Aberdeen Harbour and through a section of the city centre, up the beach to the Bridge of Don, then onwards to Balmedie, finally arriving at Newburgh – no doubt with a few blisters!

As well as raising awareness of the injustice of Gaza, the SPSC are raising funds through sponsorship for PalestineConnect (www.palestineconnect.org), a small grassroots charity that operates computer-aided learning centres in three of the refugee camps in the Gaza Strip.

Anyone who wishes to join us on the walk is very welcome, as are all donations. And if anyone sees us en route, give us a wave!
For further details contact aberdeen@scottishpsc.org.uk
To make a donation, visit the “Donate” page at http://www.scottishpsc.org.uk/ and select PalestineConnect from the campaign options.

Aberdeen Forward, a local environmental charity, along with Aberdeenshire Council are to organise a “Give and Take” Day at the Rescue Hall, Peterhead on Saturday, 18th September, 2010.

The idea for the event is people can take along, items such as furniture, kitchenware, books, dvds & cds, toys, and plants/gardenware between 8.30am and 12.00 noon. From 10.00 until 3.00pm the Rescue Hall will be open to the public who can come along and take items they want for FREE.

Clothes, paint, videos and all electrical goods will NOT be accepted.

Teas, coffees and home bakes will be available on the day.

It is hoped that among those who may benefit are families on low incomes, or those setting up home for the first time. It is also hoped that by holding this event, items that might have gone to landfill will be found a new home.

If you wish to arrange large items to be collected to take to the event, you can contact Aberdeen Forward on 01224 560360 or email admin@abzforward.plus.com for more details. There will also be a delivery service on the day for people wanting to take large items away.
