Superheroics, baking expertise and sporting prowess: they’re maybe not the first things that spring to mind when you think of a successful hotel. But for staff at The Aberdeen Altens Hotel, raising thousands of pounds for a local charity is top on their super powered to-do list.

From team bowling nights to a breakfast bake sale – which attracted the Northsound One Breakfast Show team – the hotel’s staff have taken part in a variety of unusual fundraising challenges throughout 2015 to raise much needed funds for Aberdeen charity, Cash for Kids.

As part of Cash for Kids’ Bed Appeal, which seeks to provide much-needed beds for disadvantaged children, members of staff were sponsored to wear their pyjamas and slippers to work. The staff also participated in a bed making challenge for the appeal, putting their hospitality skills to the test to make the perfect bed against the clock.

Many of the team have also had their running shoes on, taking part in the Colour Me Rad race, and providing catering and marshalling for the annual Baker Hughes 10k.

Another event saw the staff dressed as superheroes performing random acts of kindness to those visiting the hotel. Most popular amongst guests was the effort of two members of staff who dressed as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and made it their mission to hand out the characters’ favourite food – pizza – to hotel guests.

Julia Leitch, Aberdeen Cluster Sales Office Manager, says,

“It was important to us that the charity we supported in 2015 worked with the local community. The staff were all involved in selecting the charity, and Cash for Kids ticked all the boxes: the work they do with children in the north east is incredibly important, and we are proud to have been fundraising for such a worthwhile cause.

“At the beginning of October we held out first ever Volunteer Recognition Dinner in the hotel, which celebrated the efforts of Cash for Kids’ volunteers. But the year is not over yet, and we are looking forward to taking part in even more fundraising events between now and Christmas.”

The Aberdeen Altens Hotel still has a number of fundraising events coming up. As part of Mission Christmas, the hotel will become a drop-off point for presents for disadvantaged children in the area. New and unwrapped gifts can be handed in for children and young people aged 0-18, and many of the staff have already pledged their support for the cause. The team will also aid the Coats for Kids Appeal.

The Aberdeen Altens Hotel is part of The Hotel Collection, which has two other venues in the city – The Caledonian Hotel and The Aberdeen Skyway Hotel. There are 446 bedrooms across the three venues, and each has conferencing and banqueting facilities. The Aberdeen Altens Hotel also has a health and leisure club. A north-east charity is aiming to ensure that hundreds of local children living in poverty are warm on their walk to school this winter. With thanks to Ian McLaren, PR account manager, Innes Associates.

CashforkidsCash for Kids has launched its annual Coats for Kids appeal in order to fulfil an anticipated 600 applications for children’s winter clothing vouchers.

In order to meet the expected demand, the Aberdeen-based charity needs to raise over £30,000 to fund the purchase of a warm winter coat, a pair of winter boots and a scarf, hat and gloves for every child to keep the winter chill away.

This is the third consecutive year in which Cash for Kids has organised the Coats for Kids appeal. 

The appeal was initially launched after the charity received a significant number of applications in its quarterly grant funding programme from families requesting funding to purchase winter clothing for their children.

Cash for Kids, which supports sick, disabled and disadvantaged children and young people under the age of 18 living in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire, works with support workers, social workers and community groups to identify those children who are in need of new winter clothing.

The charity has struck a deal with a leading retailer to provide vouchers to the families in need. These vouchers can then be redeemed against the purchase of children’s winter wear.

Michelle Ferguson, charity manager, said:

“Winter is a time when family finances can become very stretched. There are an estimated 12,000 children in north-east Scotland living in poverty and some of their parents cannot afford to purchase warm winter clothing for their children. There are obvious health reasons why youngsters should be cosy when walking to school or playing outside in winter.

“In 2014, we were inundated with applications and expect similar high demand this year. We received an incredible response last year with a large number of public and corporate donations which enabled us to fulfil all applications. To do the same again this year would be tremendous, meaning that all of the children in north-east Scotland who may not otherwise be kitted out in warm winter clothing are ready for whatever winter can throw at them.”

In addition to running specific appeals, Cash for Kids provides quarterly grant funding to support sick, disabled and disadvantaged children and young people under the age of 18 throughout Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire. Funding is distributed at the end of January, April, July and October every year and is available to individuals, families and community groups. All applications must be endorsed by a third party, such as a social worker or health visitor.

Spelling it out – using art to say thank you to Aberdeen Asset Management’s Charitable Foundation for its support in the Teapot Trust.

Aberdeen Asset Management’s Charitable Foundation has ‘poured’ a cash donation into a pioneering art therapy service that helps to reduce feelings of stress and anxiety for children attending hospital in Aberdeen.

The Teapot Trust provides professional art therapy to children with chronic illnesses in medical settings, including clinics, hospital wards and hospices across Scotland.

Young children don’t always have the words to describe how they feel but making art often leads to them being able to share worries non-verbally, helping children gain confidence and feel more in control and able to cope with their condition.

The Trust’s art therapists work with children who have chronic illnesses, and their families, at the Royal Aberdeen Children’s Hospital in Aberdeen, and the Aberdeen Asset Management Charitable Foundation will fund the Open Group work there for a year with a grant of £7236.

The Open Group is an innovative service tailored for hospital outpatient departments.

Any child attending clinic can visit the art table to paint, draw, make a collage or model clay and engage with an art therapist if they wish. The group helps to reduce anxiety before medical procedures, as well as providing a safe space for children to express feelings about their illness that may be difficult to talk about.

After they lost their eight year old daughter Verity to cancer, East Lothian parents Laura and John Young set up the Teapot Trust in her memory. Verity had a life based around tests, medications, hospital visits and illness but art gave her a way to expressing herself, and this activity became essential for the family’s coping strategy.

The charity operates across Scotland employing nine art therapists on a part-time basis. As well as open group art therapy, the Teapot Trust provides  small group/ward based art therapy for children who are hospitalised, and one-to-one art therapy for those who need additional support to help them cope.

The Trust does not receive any NHS funding so it is reliant on the generosity of individual donors and grants like the one from Aberdeen Asset Management’s Charitable Foundation  – it takes over £230,000 each year to continue its work with children and young people.

Founder Laura Young commented:

“The Teapot Trust is delighted to be awarded a grant of £7236 from Aberdeen Asset Management Charitable Foundation for the Open Group. These children face a lifetime of having to cope with their condition. They and their families are often highly anxious about hospital appointments, and art therapy is proven to reduce anxiety, encourage self-expression, promote healthy coping mechanisms and can be used by the medical teams as a communication tool.

“This year we expect to help almost 400 children attending out-patient clinics in Aberdeen.”

Parents deeply value  and appreciate the role the service plays in supporting families at what can be a challenging and difficult time.

One parent whose child attended open group art therapy commented:

“My daughter was very upset when she arrived at the hospital but as soon as she saw the painting she calmed down and immediately joined in. The art therapists were extremely kind and encouraging and what had been a horrible experience was turned into fun. This also made the medical procedures later much more straightforward.”

Health experts have also spoken of the importance of art therapy helping children with illness and Professor Sir Kenneth Calman, ex-Chief Medical Officer said: “Arts and creativity is remarkably helpful and positive in hospital. The work of The Teapot Trust is quite inspirational.”

Dominic Kite  of the Aberdeen Asset Management Charitable Fund said:

“We are very pleased to be able to support the Teapot Trust which provides such a valuable and important  service to children and their families.

“Being ill and going to hospital places a huge emotional strain on families, and through art therapy, the Teapot Trust is able  to provide friendship, security, discussion, respite and relief.”

Hosted by Bon Accord & St Nicholas, the family fun day was the first event to be held in the enhanced space and saw attendees enjoy a day of music, food and activities to mark the garden’s completion in style.

At the heart of the garden is now a children’s play area, which was made possible thanks to funding from city-based charity Aberdeen Forward.

The playground is now the focal point of the greenspace, with improved seating, lighting and flower provision also helping to breathe new life into the area.

Members of the charity, alongside representatives from Bon Accord & St Nicholas and Aberdeen Inspired as well as the Lord Provost of Aberdeen George Adam were present to open the play area as it welcomed its first children.

The attraction’s new name was also unveiled, with Glashieburn’s P4 pupil William Stewart’s suggestion of ‘The Silver City Playground’, coming out top in a competition that saw nearly 50 entries submitted from schools throughout Aberdeen.

Guests were treated to a performance and workshop from the Guarana Street Drummers and were also able to take part in a number of activities provided by craft group Busy Beasties.

The event also welcomed special guests in the shape of owls Eral and Hedwig, stars of the recent Harry Potter films, thanks to Aberdeenshire-based Owl and Pussy Cat Centre. Cupcakes and samples from YO! Sushi and Ed’s Easy Diner were also available on the day.

Craig Stevenson, manager of Bon Accord & St Nicholas, said:

“Saturday’s fun day really helped shine a spotlight on some of the new features of the roof garden and it was great to see so many happy faces join us for the celebration.

“The play area has already proved in its first day that it will be a great addition to the space, providing an outdoor area for children within the city centre; something that this part of Aberdeen simply didn’t have before.

“The hard work and dedication shown by all the partners within this project is commendable and we’re pleased that initial feedback on the garden has been positive. Aberdeen now has an enhanced event space right at the heart of its city centre and we look forward to welcoming people to the garden throughout the months to come.”

Kath Deans, landfill community fund officer at Aberdeen Forward/CFINE, said:

“We were thrilled to be involved with the roof garden project and I hope the play area is enjoyed by children for many years to come.

“This was an important project for Aberdeen Forward, which is currently in the process of merging with CFINE. It’s our aim to find worthwhile projects that will benefit from funding sourced through landfill community tax and to have this new play area at the heart of the city is a major positive for Aberdeen.”

A competition has been launched for primary school pupils in Aberdeen to get involved with the relaunch of a popular city centre greenspace.

Plans for the roof garden near the St Nicholas Centre were announced earlier this year, with over £200,000 in funding secured for the project, including support from Aberdeen Inspired, Aberdeen City Council, Aberdeen Forward, Aberdeen Greenspace, Bon Accord & St Nicholas, Atkins and Creative Core.

The area has been earmarked for a number of additions in an effort to encourage more people to use the city space on a regular basis.

At the heart of the space will be a children’s play area, with environmental charity Aberdeen Forward committing £25,000 to this section of the garden. Business organisation Aberdeen Inspired, along with shopping centre Bon Accord & St Nicholas are looking for the help of schools from across the city to come up with a name for what will be the focal point of the garden.

The revamp is set to be unveiled on October 3 at a family friendly open day, where the winning name for the play area will also be announced and marked with a special plaque.

Craig Stevenson, manager of Bon Accord & St Nicholas, said:

“Work on the roof garden continues to gather pace and we really are delighted with the feedback we’ve received since we announced we were coming together with a range of partners to enhance what is a popular space in the heart of Aberdeen’s city centre.

“With the play area being a new addition, we want to involve as many local primary schools as possible in a competition to come up with a name for this aspect of the space. We’ll be sending information packs to every primary school in the city and we’d be delighted if a class managed to take some time out and put forward a couple of suggestions.

“The winner will be picked in advance of the opening in October and the victorious class will be invited down to the event to help play a part in officially opening it. It’s a chance for a school to be an integral part of a greenspace that is set to serve the community and its visitors for years to come.”

Alongside the children’s play area, vastly improved, modern lighting is also set to be installed to create a safe and welcoming area for families and individuals to enjoy.

An impressive array of wildflowers and plants are also set to breathe new life into the existing planters, with 18 flowerbeds in total aiming to enhance the area’s green space. Improved seating, including provision for picnics, is also part of the plans.

Gary Craig, chief executive of Aberdeen Inspired, said:

“The roof garden enhancement continues to move forward and we’re pleased with how things are shaping up; you can really notice a difference already to the aesthetic of the space.

“We’re delighted to be working in partnership with a number of city centre businesses and organisations and this legacy project is a working example of how a joint project approach within Aberdeen can come together to the benefit of the wider city.

“The schools competition adds another element to the project as, with the new play area set to be a main focus of the garden, we are keen to let as many youngsters as possible know about the plans for the space. We want to help create a buzz of excitement in advance of the work being completed and I look forward to reading through the suggestions that are submitted.”

Staff from the Aberdeen office of Lloyd’s Register pulled on their walking boots recently and completed a 26-mile walk in aid of local children’s charity Cash for Kids.
A 26-strong team from the global engineering, technical and business services organisation took part in the Aberdeen Kiltwalk, which saw them walk from the city’s Duthie Park along the Deeside Way to Potarch.

In the process the group raised over £4,800 for Cash for Kids, which supports sick, disabled and disadvantaged children and young people living in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire.

This was the second successive year that a team from Lloyd’s Register had taken on the Aberdeen Kiltwalk. Nineteen staff completed the route last year and encouraged others to participate this year.

The team was inspired to complete the walk in aid of Cash for Kids after learning about the work the charity does to support young people living in the region. Both the walk and the charity fit with Lloyd’s Register’s values of supporting local children’s charities, encouraging team building and promoting health and well-being. Staff took the opportunity to strengthen relationships with staff in the firm’s other Aberdeen offices by including them in their team.

In total the group raised over £7,700, with £2,900 being distributed amongst the event’s other charity partners.

Dressed in kilts and tartan tutus, the group encountered mixed weather on their fundraising stroll. It was warm throughout, and although they basked in some sunshine they did endure heavy downpours of rain and hail. Each team member took an estimated 58,000 steps to cover the distance, with some picking up blisters along the way, caused either by poorly chosen socks or footwear.

Jason Harris, senior integrity engineer, Lloyd’s Register, said:

“I came up with the idea of participating in the Kiltwalk in 2014 and roped in a large group of colleagues to take on the challenge. It was such a fantastic experience that I jumped at the chance of participating again in 2015. The aim was to put together an even bigger squad and surpass the phenomenal amount of money we raised last year, which we did.

“My walking partner for the majority of the day, Stuart Murdo, and I were first from our team to cross the finish line in a time of six hours and 26 minutes. The final member of the LR Kiltwalk team that I had ‘willingly assembled’ completed the route 10 hours and 9 minutes after setting off from Duthie Park.

“As we sat in the park at Potarch, enjoying the live music with some well-earned refreshments, comparing our aches and blisters whilst watching walkers finish the event, it started to hit home with everyone what a fantastic achievement we had made as a collective team.

“The incredible fundraising efforts through sponsorship and events supported by the local LR office for Cash for Kids made every painful mile worthwhile.  Motivating us along the route were pictures of the children that the money raised would be directly helping.  It spurred us all on and will do so when we take on the challenge again in 2016.”

Cash for Kids charity manager Michelle Ferguson said:

“This was a fantastic effort by all of the Lloyd’s Register team.  Walking 26 miles in one go is no mean feat, and resulted in blisters, sore feet and aching joints. The sense of achievement in completing the walk and the knowledge of how much they had raised will no doubt have soothed their aliments for a short while.

“It is the individuals and groups that take on challenges such as the Aberdeen Kiltwalk which plays an important role in the charitable sector. This donation of over £4,800 to Cash for Kids could either help to fund intensive physiotherapy for a child with cerebral palsy, purchase equipment for children to use at a community skatepark, or buy a specialist bed for a disabled child.”

Shire1Aberdeenshire Rugby Club is teaming up with local charity Instant Neighbour to help lend a hand to the city’s poorest and most vulnerable.
The Woodside club will work with the charity to raise donations of canned and long-life foods, electrical equipment and baby supplies for the most in-need individuals and families across Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire.

The club will be appealing to all past and present players as well as social members to bring donations to the clubhouse between 6.30pm and 8pm on a Tuesday and Thursday night before the first pre-season friendly on Saturday, August 15.

The first XV will be taking on Perthshire while the Super Twas second XV will be facing up against RAF Lossiemouth. Representatives from Instant Neighbour will be present on the day to collect the donations raised.

Aberdeenshire RFC club president Alasdair Farquharson said:

“The club is based out of Woodside Sports Complex and as such is keen to help charities in the local area and support people in the community.

“We are therefore delighted to be organising a collection day at the club where former and current players can bring donations in kind or financial which we can then pass on to Instant Neighbour.

“We’re thrilled to be working with them and hope to help them in any small way we can.”

Susan Cheyne, business development manager at Instant Neighbour, said:

“Instant Neighbour relies on the kind donations of members of the public to allow us to continue to help those in need living in and around Aberdeen. Without donations, we would be unable to provide our local community with affordable furniture, electrical equipment, and childcare equipment, and we could not operate our food bank.

“By donating these items to us, you are directly helping to support some of the poorest and most vulnerable people living in Aberdeen. Thank you for your generosity.”

Aberdeenshire RFC are a BT National League Division 2 side situated in the north of Aberdeen. In addition to the club’s three senior teams, Aberdeenshire has a burgeoning ladies and junior team.

Hospital corners will be the order of the day when a new competition is held in Aberdeen next month. The city is to play host to the inaugural Scottish Bed Making Championship on Thursday, 06 August.

The brainchild of local children’s charity Cash for Kids, the event forms part of its fundraising efforts for this year’s Bed Appeal.

The appeal, which officially launched earlier this month, aims to provide underprivileged children in north-east Scotland with a bed of their own and local disabled youngsters with specialist beds.

The charity hopes this year’s Bed Appeal will raise around £25,000 to purchase beds for more than 100 local underprivileged and disabled children.

The Scottish Bed Making Championship will be staged at Kingswells’ Village Urban Resort and is expected to attract entries from hotels, guest houses, care providers and hospitals in north-east Scotland.

Teams of four will be challenged to make a double bed – fitting sheets, pillow slips and duvet covers – as quickly as possible, before then making a bed which will be judged on its presentation. Points will be awarded for each task, with the two highest scoring teams then taking part in a bed race to be crowned Scottish Bed Making Champions.  The winners will also win a corporate bowling night courtesy of Codona’s.

Cash for Kids charity manager Michele Binnie said:

“We are very excited to be launching the Scottish Bed Making Championship, which will be an important part of the 2015 Bed Appeal. The appeal highlights the issues of poverty and disability that families here in the north-east are facing.

A major campaign that has the potential to change lives by providing underprivileged children in north-east Scotland with a bed of their own and local disabled youngsters with specialist beds has been launched by Cash for Kids.
Now in its third year, the charity’s month-long Bed Appeal aims to raise £25,000 to purchase beds for more than 100 children living in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire.

The appeal was officially launched on Saturday at John Lewis in Aberdeen.

The Aberdeen-based charity has provided over 260 beds as a result of its two previous appeals. This has included specialist beds for disabled children. One such child that Cash for Kids has supported is Rhys Munro.

The five-year-old from Banchory is blind and has epilepsy, and also suffers from severe reflux and poor trunk control. Due to his condition he lacks mobility and requires a safe and secure place to sleep and spend time during the day.

Having outgrown his cot, his family applied to Cash for Kids for assistance to purchase a specialist, fully-adjustable £4,500 bed for the youngster. The bed is fitted with protective sides to prevent Rhys rolling out and hurting himself. It can also be raised or lowered electronically, allowing it to meet his changing needs and those of his carers.

His mum, Sarah Newman, said:

“The support we have had from Cash for Kids has been brilliant. The bed was very expensive and I never thought we would get funding to cover the total cost.  I was absolutely elated when I found out they would cover the total cost. This fully-adjustable bed is future-proof, which is a massive weight off our shoulders.

“Rhys’s condition means he will never be able to sleep in a normal bed as he could roll out, so a specialist bed was needed. A bed is a basic thing, but for us it ticks so many boxes. This bed is life-changing. Not only is it somewhere comfortable for Rhys to sleep, but it doubles up as a place we can change him, so being able to electronically adjust the height of the bed to suit the carer is important.

“Rhys would probably spend most of his day in his bed. He absolutely loves it. Because of his disabilities he doesn’t have mobility and isn’t able to run about like normal children, so the bed is somewhere he spend time during the day listening to music or audio books and we know he is safe and secure.

“Donations to the Bed Appeal can make a massive difference to people on your doorstep. A bed seems like a simple thing, but for certain children it is a vital, basic need and can be life-changing.”

Cash for Kids provides grant funding to families, children’s groups and associations across the region on a quarterly basis. It is once again running the appeal in response to a large number of applications from families to help fund a bed for their child.

The charity is again working with Aberdeen mattress, divan and furniture manufacturer and supplier Glencraft. The bed firm, which operates as a social enterprise, will supply beds to Cash for Kids at a reduced rate.

Michele Binnie, Cash for Kids charity manager, said:

“We continue to be surprised by the number of applications we receive from families seeking funding to purchase beds for their children. Cash for Kids’ Bed Appeal not only aims to ensure these children get a good night’s sleep, but also improve their health and quality of life.

“With this year’s Bed Appeal we hope to provide greater support to families with disabled children. As we have seen with Rhys, specialist beds are vital for these children and their families. Although the bed costs a considerable amount, it has a transformational impact on their lives. The smallest of donations to the Bed Appeal can make a large, positive impact on children’s lives here in the north-east.”

Cash for Kids is calling on the north-east public to get behind its Bed Appeal, which runs throughout July. The charity is encouraging people to wear their slippers to work for a month, organise breakfast bake sales and hold pyjama or onesie to work days.

Keen runners are being urged to come forward to take part in a one mile race down Aberdeen’s longest shopping street.

As the precursor to the popular Celebrate Aberdeen parade, the fourth Union Street Mile is being held on Saturday August, 22.

Sport Aberdeen, which organises the free pre-parade event, has invited pupils from P6 and P7 as well as from S1 to S4 to take part. The youngsters’ endeavours will be followed by the adults in the seniors race.

All races will start at the Music Hall, with runners heading towards the Holburn Street Junction, where they will then turn and head down Union Street towards the finish line at the Castlegate.

Morven Mackenzie, director of Aberdeen based integrated communications agency Citrus:Mix, the driving force behind Celebrate Aberdeen, said:

“The Union Street Mile is a lovely way to start the Celebrate Aberdeen weekend and we are delighted that Sport Aberdeen is putting it on again.

“The atmosphere on the day is always fantastic and I would encourage both youngsters and adults to put themselves forward to take part. We have a great range of activities and entertainment on throughout the weekend, so there is plenty to keep families entertained after the Union Street Mile.”

More than 90 charities have now signed up to take part in the celebratory weekend, which includes a parade through the city centre on Saturday, August 22 ,and a host of performances in Union Terrace Gardens on Sunday, August 23.

Sam Begg, commercial and events manager at Sports Aberdeen, said:

“Sport Aberdeen is looking forward to this year’s Union Street Mile and the Celebrate Aberdeen parade. The Mile is a fantastic event to showcase our local athletes and has received a great response since entries opened.  It’s great to be part of an event that highlights the city of Aberdeen.”

All children taking part must achieve the mile in under 8 minutes. To participate in the seniors’ race, entrants must be 16 years or older on the day of the event. There isn’t a cut-off date for entry but the event is being run on a first come first served basis, with those interested in participating encouraged to get entries in as soon as possible.

Runners should also submit their previous best 1500 metres time in order to meet with race requirements.
