A world-renowned expert on generational behaviour will address 200 delegates at a tourism conference in the north east in early 2015. Dr Paul Redmond (pictured), a leading expert on generations and the graduate labour market from the University of Manchester, will deliver the keynote speech at the Aberdeen City and Shire Tourism Conference on 28 January 2015.

Held in the Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre, the conference follows a highly successful inaugural event in 2014 which saw tourism businesses from across the north east come together to discuss the region’s tourism offering.

The 2015 conference will feature speeches, interactive workshops and networking sessions in order to allow tourism operators the chance to learn the skills required to maximise their business potential.

Registration is now open for the Aberdeen City and Shire Tourism Conference, which is being organised by the Aberdeen City and Shire Tourism Partnership. Delegates pay just £55 (excluding VAT) to attend the full day conference, which will allow them access to industry experts from across the country. Alongside Dr Redmond, a number of other speakers will address the delegates during the course of the conference. Alastair Dobson, chairman of VisitArran and managing director of Taste of Arran, will discuss the benefits of collaboration in business, and VisitScotland’s Chris McCoy will explain the steps required to make sure tourism businesses are accessible to all.

Representatives from event sponsors Aberdeen International Airport and Serco NorthLink Ferries will also reveal new developments in the area’s transport links.

In addition to speeches, delegates have the opportunity to choose two in-depth workshops from a programme covering a diverse range of topics including Online Bookings, Accessible Tourism, Social Media, Sustainability & Legislation, Google Analytics and Business Collaboration.

VisitAberdeen has announced it will launch a Chinese version of its website in a bid to attract a share of the $128 billion China spends every year on overseas leisure and business tourism. With thanks to Stevie Brown, Tricker PR

“Aberdeen has so much to offer the Chinese market.” – Steve Harris, Chief Executive of VisitAberdeen.

The Chinese are the biggest overseas spenders in the world, spending on average 50% more than Americans when they are on vacation. With a total population of 1.357 billion, only 10 million of China’s residents can speak English. With forecasts suggesting 500 million Chinese people will travel overseas in the next 15 years, VisitAberdeen believes it is critical to promote the city as a leisure and business destination to the Chinese in their native language.

Since 2011 the number of seats on flights between China and the UK has increased by 25%, to over 50,000 seats per month according to a VisitScotland report.

VisitAberdeen worked with media agency China Business Network (CBN) to create the site, and will continue to work with them to promote the city to the Chinese market place.

Steve Harris, Chief Executive of VisitAberdeen says,

“The Chinese language website will provide us with the opportunity to reach one of the wealthiest markets in the world, and promote Aberdeen as a leisure and business tourism destination. Less than 1% of the population in China can speak English, so the creation of the new site will allow us to reach the 638 million Chinese people who are online and make $22 billion worth of internet travel bookings every year.

“We will continue to work very closely with the CBN throughout the project to promote Aberdeen to the people of China.  There are so many cultural differences that we have to be aware of, for example there are often censorship issues surrounding websites such as Google in China and Facebook and Twitter are banned. These are often our go-to digital marketing platforms in the western world, but for this project we’re having to utilise different social media platforms such as an app called WeChat, which is similar to the UK version WhatsApp.

“CBN represented VisitAberdeen at the China International Travel Market in November this year, and we are planning to attend two events in 2015 in China; Incentive Travel and Conventions Meetings China; and China Outbound Travel and Tourism Market. These events are important for us to attend as it will allow us to meet and discuss what the Aberdeen area has to offer Chinese tourists with key tourism influencers.

“With excellent connections to hub airports, Aberdeen is easy for Chinese tourists to travel to, with connecting flights from London, Paris, Amsterdam and Frankfurt. Flight times from Beijing to London takes under 11 hours, and with connecting flights between London and Aberdeen taking a little over an hour you could travel China to Aberdeen in a little over half a day.

“Aberdeen has so much to offer the Chinese market. We know from a Visit Britain survey that countryside, cultural and built heritage rank highly with Chinese tourists. Aberdeen has a wealth of these attractions, from the collection of castles which have a rich cultural legacy, to city landmarks like Marischal College, whisky distilleries and breath-taking countryside views.”

Miles the Bear is left out in the cold as a reindeer packs his bags and heads to Cairngorms National Park winter wonderland in spoof of hit television ad. With thanks to Eoin Smith.

Cairngorms Festive Smile 2A reindeer’s hunt for his festive smile takes centre stage in a heart-warming spoof of one of the UK’s most feel-good television ads.
The film, launched 17 December, 2014 by VisitCairngorms, parodies Thomson’s ‘Miles the Bear’ TV adverts, where a one-eyed teddy bear rediscovers his missing smile in Jamaica.

The VisitCairngorms film features a down-trodden reindeer who finds his festive smile in the Cairngorms National Park where he gets to go mountain biking, travel on the CairnGorm Funicular Railway, experience real snow, meet his own kind in the form of the Cairngorm reindeer herd and finally to meet Santa … where he’s presented with a girlfriend for Christmas.

The Cairngorms reindeer starts off at home – noticeably ‘smileless’ – having yoghurt spilled on his antlers, being dragged upstairs upside down, put through the washing machine, hung outside to dry and being attacked by the family dog. But his smile grows as he travels to the Cairngorms National Park – an area of stunning natural beauty in the Scottish Highlands renowned as a winter wonderland ­­- where he is at the heart of family activities

“We wanted to show that you don’t have to take the family all the way to Jamaica to escape a drab and dreary life and discover your smile,” says Kevin Roach, chairman of VisitCairngorms. “Experiencing the Cairngorms National Park will bring out the smile in the whole family, particularly at this time of year with so much festive spirit about.

“Our reindeer has so much more fun than Miles the bear – who spends much of his holiday on a sun lounger. Like other visitors to the park, he gets the opportunity to skate, visit real reindeer on the mountainside, see Balmoral where the Queen holidays, go mountain biking in Glenlivet and drink hot chocolate in the snow.

“Miles may have been able to work on his tan, but we bet that even his smile will droop a little when he realises that our reindeer came face to face with Santa in a real life winter wonderland right here in the UK.  Don’t be too down in the mouth though, Miles – we’d be delighted to have you visit the Cairngorms National Park at any time to enjoy a fun adventure with your family.”

  • The Potting Shed Tearoom at Inshriach Nursery – a rustic tearoom with a unique viewing gallery to spot birds and red squirrels.
  • Loch Morlich beach – A blue flag beach in the middle of the Highlands on a sparkling freshwater loch which views of the snow clad mountain peaks.
  • Balmoral Castle – favoured holiday home of the royal family since the days of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert

Flaming balls of fire swing through the crowds while the sounds of legendary 80’s pop band The Human League soar through the air.

It can only be the world famous Stonehaven Hogmanay celebrations – taking place from 8.30pm on Wednesday 31st December 2014.

Over the years Stonehaven has achieved a legendary reputation as one of the top destinations to bring in the New Year.

The population of the tranquil seaside town of Stonehaven is set to more than double from 11,000 to over 25,000 as people from around the world descend on the area to attend the hugely anticipated events.

The Stonehaven Fireballs is a 105 year old tradition that sees a select group of ‘swingers’ make their way down the High Street in front of legions of spectators, whirling flaming balls of fire above their heads before throwing them into the harbour.

Fire has been used through the centuries as a symbol for destroying wicked spirits and purifying evil to make way for good fortune. And there is no better time to forget hardships and look forward to a bright future than New Year’s Eve. From the start of December the swingers begin to create their own fireballs from chicken wire, using various materials to fuel the flames. The spectacular sight is not to be missed and is set to delight the capacity crowd of 8,500 people.

Also taking place as part of Stonehaven’s Hogmanay celebrations is Open Air in the Square – an outdoor concert in the town centre which has featured music legends Simple Minds and The Red Hot Chili Pipers in the past. This year the event will feature 80’s pop band The Human League.

Securing a high profile band three years in a row is a huge coup for a small town like Stonehaven. The concert is attended by upwards of 6,000 and there is always a vibrant atmosphere. The evening will also include a performance from Scots folk band the Peatbog Faeries and another surprise guest is set to be announced soon.

With so much on offer it’s a fantastic place to visit and bring in 2015 – it’s definitely the hottest place to spend the Hogmanay.

Glen Tanar Estate is offering the perfect antidote to crowded shopping malls in the run-up to Christmas. The estate near Aboyne on Royal Deeside is about to open the doors on a festive pop-up shop – its first retail venture.

The pop-up shop will open on Monday, December 1 in a recently renovated building close to the estate office.

As well as selling freshly cut trees and holly wreaths, the venue will stock the brand new limited edition range of exclusive Glen Tanar tweed accessories.

Claire Bruce, owner of Glen Tanar Estate, says,

“We have been selling Christmas trees on the estate for many years, and over the last two Christmas seasons we have also sold our own range of homemade jams and chutney from the small store at our nursery.

“We saw the potential to do something a little bit different and expand what we could offer by selling items produced by or linked to the estate. The pop-up shop will be open right up until Christmas, and we hope that customers will enjoy the experience of shopping somewhere intimate and unique.”

Jams, chutneys and biscuits have been produced by Glen Tanar chef Liz Peck, while the accessories, including handbags, purses and table placemats have been created by textile designer Araminta Campbell using the tweed she designed exclusively for the estate.

Other items on sale include CDs produced by traditional musicians Adian O’Rouke and Fraser Fifield– both of whom have performed at Glen Tanar as part of Deeside’s Food and Fiddle and Atomic Doric projects.

There will also be a range of homeware products and cards from Hipster Spinster, run by Victoria Fifield, daughter of Glen Tanar’s head forester, Mike Fifield.  Some of the items will also available to buy from the new retail section on the Glen Tanar website.

Claire adds,

“We are only open for a short time, so we felt it was important that everyone could have the chance to experience retail therapy at Glen Tanar. The online shop will continue to operate after the Christmas period.”

The pop-up shop opens on Monday, December 1 through to Monday, December 22 from 9am to 4pm, seven days a week. The shop area will be utilised as a small meeting space in the new year.

Glen Tanar Estate is set in the heart of Royal Deeside in the Cairngorms National Park and offers a wealth of activities and attractions from fishing and walking to adventuring on estate safaris. VisitAberdeen is representing the Granite City at European Incentive Business Travel and Meetings (EIBTM) expo, in Barcelona. The three day annual conference takes place between 18 and 20 November, and is an opportunity for Aberdeen to increase its share of the business tourism market.

Aberdeen will be showcased as a buoyant business travel destination to over 9000 global industry buyers in the meetings and events industry looking for cities suitable to host their events.

Jenni Fraser, Business Development Manager and Andrew Pratt, Business Tourism Executive of VisitAberdeen will be networking with decision makers and organisers of business travel to explain why they should make Aberdeen their choice of destination.

Jenni says:

In 2013, international business tourists to Scotland spent £296.6 million during their visits, which represents a 20.9% rise on the previous year.

In addition to increasing expenditure, there is also a rise in the number of incoming business trips: up 5.3 % on last year and a growth of 6.6% in total number of nights spent in Scotland during business trips.

Aberdeen has risen to 11th position in a survey of the UK’s cities as destinations for business tourism and events. Aberdeen ranked 20th in 2012 and 16th in 2013, so the city’s ranking has risen considerably over a two year period.

The British Meetings and Events Industry Survey brings together the responses of 500 conference organisers; 250 from the corporate sector and 250 from the not for profit sector.

Respondents are asked in which cities they have held events. London, Birmingham and Manchester are the top three destinations in 2014, with Edinburgh 4th and Glasgow 7th.

The survey also reveals that associations are organising more events than in the previous years and that their budgets are growing. The 2014/15 report shows that 30% of UK based associations expect to organise more events in the coming 12 months. According to VisitScotland, business tourism is worth more than £1.9 billion to Scotland. Spend per night by business visitors is 1.5 times higher than that of leisure visitors.

Brian Horsburgh, AECC’s Managing Director says,

“We are delighted to see Aberdeen move up again this year in the Top UK Destinations. We welcomed 87 large conferences which attracted over 30,000 delegates to AECC in the 12 months to June 2014 and are pleased that conference organisers see the attraction of Aberdeen City and Shire for both delegates and exhibitors.”

Adelle Chessor, 24, Digital Marketing Executive at VisitAberdeen has been named as one of three nominees for the title of Young Ambassador in the Aberdeen City and Shire Tourism Awards. The award, which will be announced at a ceremony in January 2015, recognises that young people are the essence of the future of the tourism industry.

Adelle joined VisitAberdeen in June 2013 with the remit to make VisitAberdeen the most digitally engaged destination marketing organisation (DMO) in the UK.

Her role involves ensuring that digital activity is at the core of all marketing of Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire.

Her work has resulted in the unique visitors to the VisitAberdeen website rising by more than 23,000 in less than a year; Facebook likes rising by nearly 10,000 and Twitter followers showing a five-fold increase in the same period.

The digital marketing of VisitAberdeen also includes the maintenance of Aberdeen’s most comprehensive website. Part of Adelle’s role is to create content which is dynamic and engaging to promote the city to leisure and business visitors. This has also included the creation of dedicated campaigns for specific events such as the Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open which took place in the city in July 2014 and the creation of hashtag campaigns for Twitter.

When Aberdeen won the Scottish League Cup, the team created the hashtag #sheepdeals to share city promotions

Adelle says of her nomination:

“I’m flattered that I’ve been recognised in this way. I’m committed to showing that digital marketing can really deliver results for tourism businessesand recently I’ve been working to develop training materials for all levels to allow local tourism-related businesses to deliver real business benefits for them using extremely cost effective digital tools.”

The awards are supported by the Aberdeen City and Shire Hotels Association and take place at Ardoe House Hotel on Friday 30 January 2015. Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire are to be marketed to Chinese tourists in a new drive by tourism agency VisitAberdeen.

The campaign will see the creation of a new website for the lucrative Chinese market, as well as attendance at key tourism events aimed at encouraging visitors to the region.

Steve Harris, Chief Executive of VisitAberdeen, said:

“China boasts the largest outbound tourism market and is the highest spender on overseas travel, contributing $124 billion (around £78 billion) to the global tourism industry – 50% higher than that of the USA.

“This willingness to travel and explore overseas, coupled with a cultural love of golf, whisky and history, makes Aberdeen the perfect destination for Chinese tourists. With 60 golf courses within an hour of the city, some of the world’s most famous whisky brands including The Glenlivet and Royal Lochnagar, and a number of the finest castles in Scotland, Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire have a lot of offer Chinese tourists.”

There are now around 638 million Chinese internet users who make $22 billion (almost £14 billion) worth of bookings online each year. VisitAberdeen will capitalise on this with the launch of a new website aimed at Chinese tourists looking to travel overseas.

Steve continued:

“We have been working with the China Business Network (CBN) to create a new website which will be hosted on the China Wide Web. This has involved the translation of a large portion of the VisitAberdeen website, which will provide useful information to those wishing to travel from China to Aberdeen.

“This year 110 million Chinese tourists travelled overseas, and it is predicted that in the next 15 years this will increase to 500 million. Through the introduction of our new website, we will reach out to those travellers and show them all that Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire has to offer.

“We are also working to produce Chinese brochures and literature that will be distributed throughout the country, and will be represented by the CBN at the China International Travel Mart from 14-16 November.”

In 2015, VisitAberdeen plans to have a presence at further international travel markets in China, in order to reach out to tourism operators to show them the value of Aberdeen as a tourism destination. VisitAberdeen will attend the China Outbound Travel and Tourism Market, and Incentive Travel and Conventions, Meetings China exhibitions next year.

Leith knows no bounds 2

It’s more than 25 years since the story of Leith was painted larger than life itself on the gable end of a tenement on North Junction Street.

Now partly hidden behind a bush the wall art, penned by Tim Chalk, Paul Grime and David Wilkinson, went up at about the same time as the Berlin Wall came down.

At a time when the once prosperous town of Leith was at its lowest ebb, the Scottish Development Agency found some cash to fund a three-story high mural capturing the pivotal moments in Leith’s living memory.

Part of an economic re-generation programme, this gable end art piece was the culmination of a series of minor artwork programmes intended to take Leith to new artistic heights.

Tim Chalk recently told the media that:

“It was very much the fact that Leith was going through this huge change. It had been a thriving prosperous place right through the Nineteenth Century and into the Twenties and by the time this mural was painted in 1986 it was in a really depressed state.”

Tim described the people of 1980s Leith as having a “bruised pride” as a result of the “run down” condition of the area and the questions that it presented for the future.

“There was the inevitable anxiety that the whole process was going to be a gentrification and all the original Leithers were going to be edged out and obviously there has been an element of that but I think people were looking at similar things that were happing in other parts of the country and there were a lot of understandable anxieties.”

 “It was at a time when there was a strong mural movement in the country and there were a lot of us who saw murals as serving the same purpose. We wanted to produce works of art that were in public places that gave a voice to people and told their story rather than rarefied images in galleries which were purely personal views.

“The idea was to get as many voices as possible from Leith speaking through the mural.”

Now twinned with Rio de Janeiro and with the Royal Yacht Britannia hidden behind a bland shopping centre, Leith is not what it was yet again.

Mind you, neither is the faded gable end mural at the end of North Junction Street.

When we asked the staff of Leith Library about the gable end mural we wrote the following:

“In a surprise urban move, Leith library service gets asked about the 80ft by 140ft graphic on the gable end of the building on the road outside the main door.
– so what’s that wall all about?
– que?
– There is an 80ft by 140ft graphic portraying workers and shipbuilding and theatre painted on to the wall outside your door. Can you please tell me about it?
– que?

– There is an 80ft by 140ft graphic portraying workers and shipbuilding and theatre painted on to the wall outside your door. Can you please tell me about it?
– que?
– It’s huge, in fact there it is just outside your window, look at the big red flag.
– Let me ask a colleague please.

– Can I help you please?
– There is an 80ft by 140ft graphic portraying workers and shipbuilding and theatre painted on to the wall outside your door. Can you please tell me about it?
– we get asked that often. I suppose we should know.

– As a library service?
– Yes, that as well.

– Let me ask a colleague please?

– So what’s that 80ft by 140ft graphic portraying workers and shipbuilding and theatre painted on to the wall outside your door, Jesus wept.

– Maybe we can Google it.

 – It’s just outside.
– Where?
– Your window.
– Erm. Where?
– Over there.

– Helen, can you help?
– Can I help with what, who are all those people?
– It’s just outside, it has a red flag and some images of workers plus some big trees. What the fuck is wrong with you people?

(Stage left … head proud Library assistants remain engrossed in Google. Whatever happened to common sense?)”
