By Dave Watt, with thanks to Aberdeen CND.

In recent years, on the evening of 6 August, hundreds of people have gathered at the Fishermen’s Hut on the River Dee at Riverside Drive to remember the men, women and children who died in the world’s first nuclear attack, sixty five years ago.

No matter if Kansas City’s Wilders are cooking up a spicy rockabilly honky tonk casserole , hauntingly singing of tragedy or regret, or scatter-gunning the sellout crowd with sprightly and uplifting instrumentals, once you’ve seen them, you’ll want more. So do they, and they’d have played all night had they been so allowed. Whether or not there are any tickets remaining for their showcase at Fochabers Speyfest on 30 July I don’t know – but make enquiries and get there if you can.

Almost as if by arrangement, the sun popped through the clouds just before midday last Sunday to join us for the 2010 Big Lunch in Union Terrace Gardens. No small thanks to the sun, the event was really well-attended and most folk remained sitting around on the grass all afternoon enjoying mouth-watering soup and great company. Continue reading »

Popular Aberdeen ceilidh band Iron Broo will be providing the music at Mar Lodge near Braemar on Saturday July 30th to raise funds for the Archie Foundation at Aberdeen Sick Children’s Hospital.

The ceilidh, open to the public, is the brainchild of Fay Jolly whose two year old daughter Fern received treatment at the hospital and Fay has been inspired to action in gratitude for the excellent service Archie provided.

Mar Lodge will have a licensed bar, and a hog roast will be provided by Sheridans of Ballater. There will be a prize raffle to boost Archie’s funds yet further.
Transport to and from the venue will be available from Banchory, Aboyne, Ballater and Braemar and tickets to the ceilidh are priced at £10, or £15 including transport.

As well as a chance to enjoy a fun night out in aid of a worthy cause, it’s an excellent opportunity for those keen, literally, to take the first steps towards ceilidh dancing expertise, as instructions will be provided by the band for every polka, reel and jig.

To reserve tickets, contact Fay Jolly on 01339 741233 or Fiona Crawford on 01339 887672.

So what has a thirtieth anniversary gathering of ageing music lovers in Birmingham in July 2010 to do with NE Scotland?

What interest can there be for Aberdeen Voice readers in a gathering of the still-faithful, ever-passionate followers of Dexys Midnight Runners – an act who, if truth be told, last released an album of new material in 1985?

Maybe you’re unaware that the man known in Dexys’ folklore as Big Jimmy, the tall, muscular quiet guy blowing hurricane-strength trombone riffs and fills pinning down Dexys’ brass-heavy, no-prisoners-taken approach to uncompromising soul, was, and firmly remains, one of ours – Jim Paterson from Portsoy, Banffshire. By Dave Innes and Ross Cunningham.

What on (or below) earth are The Gothic Dorics, – a name evocative of a hellish hybrid ancient monochrome architectural structure lost in a bewildered modern world – and furthermore, what is their version of reality?

They have already staked their claim as the NE’s – and the world’s – first Doom-Tekno outfit. Three Aberdeen souls who have triumphed, despite the handicap of being too slothful to get things together, in creating an album due for release – or perhaps that should be escape – on Saturday 24 July when they debut at the city’s Moorings Bar. Aberdeen Voice discussed with the band its somewhat ‘interesting’ approach to lyrics and music. Continue reading »
