A long trip south proved more than worthwhile for a group of north-east wrestlers, with several among their number ascending all the way to the medallists’ podium.

Wrestlers from Oldmeldrum-based V Wrestling Academy won a number of medals at the recent English Junior Wrestling Championships at Thames Valley Athletic Centre in Eton.

11-year-old Colby Taylor struck gold in the 41k category. His fellow club members Leon Etko and Erin Mortimer added to V Wrestling’s medal haul taking silver and bronze in the 37k and 67k categories respectively.

There was further success for V Wrestling Academy in the Veterans’ Championships, which took place over the same weekend. Club member Keith Mortimer returned to Aberdeenshire with a silver medal in the 90k category.

Head coach Vio Etko accompanied the team along with his fellow coach Nicolae Cojocaru.

He said:

“This was a long trip to make for some of our younger wrestlers but they certainly rose to the occasion.

“As well as showing commitment and focus while competing, they all demonstrated great team spirit and camaraderie. The medals are the icing on the cake of a really great developmental experience.”

Leon Etko (12) repeated his silver medal success with a second placing in the 35k category of the recent International Tournament Calarasi Cup in Moldova.

Leon’s achievement in Moldova replicates that of his father and coach Vio Etko, who won the silver medal 25 years prior in the same event.

V Wrestling Academy is based at ETKO Sports Academy in Oldmeldrum. Head coach Vio Etko is a seven-time British wrestling champion and the current Commonwealth Games bronze medal holder. He is also a former winner of Aberdeenshire Sport Council’s Coach of the Year award.

Further information on V Wrestling Academy’s coaching programmes is available by calling ETKO Sports Academy on 01651 873876.

Aberdeenshire East MSP, Alex Salmond has welcomed a £100,000 funding boost for the Paul Lawrie Match Play which will take place at Murcar Links Golf Club in Aberdeenshire this July.

The event will involve a 64 main field competing for a £1m euro prize.

Scotland will now host four full European Tour events in 2015, more than any other country in the continent.

The £100,000 investment will be managed through VisitScotland and will help raise the profile of the new event.

Alex Salmond said:

“Aberdeenshire is renowned for its world-class golf courses and I am very pleased that this event will help to showcase the best the region has to offer to both visitors and locals.

“Aberdeen played host to its first European Tour event last year with the Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open and I am delighted that the Scottish Government is helping to ensure the success of major tournaments in the north-east.

“We saw during The Ryder Cup how exciting match play format can be and I would encourage anyone to take advantage of the low ticket prices recently announced by the European Tour.

“This is fantastic news for Aberdeenshire and will help to raise the profile of this exciting new event and golf in general.”

Aberdeen golfer Paul Lawrie said:

“I’m delighted with the announcement that the Scottish Government will lend its support to the event and it will be great to have VisitScotland on board as a partner.

“There are some fantastic golf events taking place in Scotland in 2015 so we are grateful to receive this financial contribution to help make our event a success in its inaugural year.”

Organisers of the Denis Law Soccer Tournament, which replaced the longstanding Aberdeen International Football Festival last year, are looking to cement the financial future of the event with the formation of a ‘Friends’ group comprising 200 members.

Scotland legend Denis, the Patron of the DLST, is passionate about the tournament.

“Sport and in this case, football, forms an important part of a child’s upbringing and I firmly believe the experience and enjoyment that kids get from this event in my home town will stay with them forever. The organisers need your support to be able to sustain this worthy cause and I would urge you to become a Friend to ensure it can continue as an annual event. I look forward to seeing you at some point during the year to thank you personally.”

And everyone who signs up at £200 per annum to become a ‘Friend’ will get the opportunity to do just that as there will be ‘Friends of DLST’ reception at Aberdeen Sports Village, hosted by Denis himself.

In addition, Friends will receive recognition of support within the tournament programme, venue and website, a quarterly e-newsletter and entry into a prize draw for a complimentary team to be included in the DLST corporate football event.

This year’s tournament will take place at ASV between July 16th and 21st with action at 16 and Under and 14 and Under age groups.

Anyone wishing to become a Friend can pay via BACS, cheque or debit card via the ‘Friends of DLST’ link on www.aberdeensportsvillage.com or by contacting ASV Events Manager Fiona Cardwell on 01224 438926 or fiona@aberdeensportvillage.com
