Hundreds of runners have shown their support for a leading north-east cancer support charity by taking part in the Baker Hughes 10k road race on its behalf.

Over 115 individuals laced up their running shoes in support of CLAN Cancer Support at the popular event on Sunday (May 17), helping raise thousands of pounds for the charity with donations still flooding in.

Runners were also accompanied by charity mascot CLANCY who was taking part in the race for the first time. The charity also helped provide marshals to help with the event itself.

Organised by Sport Aberdeen, the beachfront run is the largest 10k race in the north-east and attracts thousands of participants on a yearly basis.

Susan Crighton, CLAN’s fundraising manager, was delighted with the support shown towards the charity.

She said:

“CLAN has had a presence at the Baker Hughes race for a number of years now and the support for the charity really has grown in tandem with the popularity of the event.

“Across the entire morning, there was a sea of runners donned in CLAN t-shirts making their way along the route and I’d like to personally thank each and every person who gave up their time to run for the charity at the race.

“Donations are still flooding in and all funds raised from the race will go directly towards our provision of free support services to anyone affected by cancer. Participating in events like these on our behalf really does help us in all that we do.”

CLAN Cancer Support is an independent charity which provides comfort support and information, free of charge, for anyone, of any age, affected by any type of cancer.

CLAN aims to support people to reduce anxiety, stress and to increase their ability to cope with the effects of a serious illness. CLAN Cancer Support chief executive Debbie Thomson (pictured) is preparing to pass on the baton after more than 14 successful years with the north-east charity.

Mrs Thomson will stand down from the post in July and has been praised for her role in spearheading the organisation’s growth and cementing its reputation as a leader in its field.

Under her stewardship, CLAN has grown from employing a team of five to a staff of over 60 and has expanded its reach from Aberdeen to provide services throughout Aberdeenshire and Moray as well as in Shetland and Orkney.

Highlights included the planning, construction and launch of the £3 million purpose built CLAN House and CLAN Haven facilities on Westburn Road in Aberdeen in addition to a year of celebrations to mark the charity’s 30th anniversary in 2013.

Kenny Anderson, CLAN chairman, said:

“Debbie has been integral to everything that has been achieved during her time as chief executive. On behalf of the board and the entire CLAN family, I must thank her for her passion, commitment and forward thinking.

“We are grateful that Debbie has agreed to continue to enable us to benefit from her experience and expertise as a volunteer as well as accepting the invitation to become a valued patron. She has left a tremendous legacy and provided firm foundations for the next stage of our journey.”

The departing chief executive was appointed in January 2001 and had a clear vision to expand the charity’s role to provide support to anyone affected by cancer within its catchment area.

Mrs Thomson said:

“It has been a privilege to serve CLAN as chief executive and I’ll continue to support as a patron. After almost a decade and a half in the role, I feel now is the right time to explore other opportunities and embrace fresh challenges.

“I am proud at what we have achieved and overcome as a team and CLAN will always hold a special place in my heart. The ethos of CLAN has been ‘to comfort always’ and I believe we have fulfilled that aim through the efforts of our wonderful staff, counsellors, therapists and volunteers. I know that will continue to be the case.

“What we never lose sight of is the fact that the individuals and families we support are at the heart of everything CLAN does. My time in the post has been both a humbling and inspirational experience.”

The process has now begun to recruit a new chief executive to lead the charity in the next stage of its development.

Volunteers from ADIL, CNR International, AAB and KCA Deutag joined forces with Spencer Coatings and Mental Health Aberdeen’s team to give the charity’s base a new look

A leading north-east charity has received a donation with a difference that will enable it to transform its working environment.

Mental Health Aberdeen (MHA) has been gifted paint from Spencer Coatings Limited which is being used to revamp its central office and create an uplifting environment for workers and visitors.

The painting and coatings manufacturer first assisted the charity 14 years ago by donating materials to MHA’s Aberdeen Supported Housing Project – and has now repeated the kind gesture.

MHA offers a range of resources, including: emotional and practical support; information and advice; support with helping overcoming social isolation; links and access to other community resources; and activities promoting mental wellbeing.

Fiona Mooney, fundraising and marketing manager at MHA, said:

“We approached Spencer Coatings as they have helped us in the past and we are absolutely delighted that they have assisted us again. Their kind donation of a large amount of paint means we can begin to brighten up our office space.

“We have had corporate volunteers from ADIL, CNR International, AAB and KCA Deutag to do the painting work and they have started transforming our four offices and hallway within our central office building. It is looking brighter already and we are so grateful to both Spencer Coatings and our volunteers for giving up their time to help us.

“It makes such a difference for our visitors to be able to come to a warm, bright, welcoming place and we want to thank everyone involved who is helping us transform the space.”

Linda Stronach, of Spencer Coatings, said:

“We were happy to get involved and assist such a worthy local charity by donating our products to help enhance the charity’s premises. MHA works hard to deliver their vital services in Aberdeen and throughout the north-east and we are pleased we were able to help in this way.”

Peter Brawley, head of operations and brownfield projects at ADIL said:

“Mental Health Aberdeen is a place of respite and support for so many people in the city and shire. MHA was chosen to be ADIL’s charity of the year by our staff, who wanted to volunteer their time, as well as help raise money for this brilliant local cause. We hope our work to help improve the facilities here can make the building even more welcoming for those who come here to use the services on offer.”

MHA was founded in 1950 and provides support services, counselling and advice to people affected by challenges related to mental health and wellbeing. Services are available for children from the age of 12 and adults. The organisation was among the first to provide community care – with its first residential project, a group home for discharged psychiatric patients, opened more than 35 years ago.

MHA has also been providing day services continuously for over 60 years.

New Arc Animal Rescue Centre’s Keith Marley has some timely advice for anyone who comes across seemingly abandoned wildlife young:  call an expert for advice and touch nothing. Keith Marley explains.

cub - 6.4.15The first of this year’s ‘orphans’ has arrived. This fox cub, yet to be named, is around 3 weeks old and will be raised at The New Arc (The North East Wildlife & Animal Rescue Centre) just outside Ellon.

Once health checked and weaned, he will stay at the centre until the end of summer when a suitable release site will be found for him.

One of the dilemmas facing wildlife rescue centres is the fact that it is never a good thing to keep any wild animal on its own, while at the same time not wishing for any more to come because of sad or avoidable circumstances.

It is always better for any young animal to have the company of siblings of their own species. This helps with socialisation, learning skills and prevents boredom and institutionalisation as well as helping minimise any bond between them and their carer.

We would recommend anybody coming across any young wildlife at this time of year to phone us immediately before picking them up, unless they are in obvious distress. We can offer advice over the phone, or even come out to assess the situation.

We would remind everyone that under no circumstances should any young creature be fed cows milk as this can cause all sorts of digestive problems even leading to death. In addition, we would also recommend that baby birds should not be fed live worms, mealworms or maggots.

Advice is available on hand rearing if required and we are only too happy to help day or night.

The cub, now named ‘Fidget’, had its vet check on Mon 13 April, and is in good shape.

David Forbes, Chairman of Local Charity Future Choices and full time carer to his mother, was short-listed for a prestigious award by Entertainment Company Wobia Entertainment House at a Glitzy awards ceremony recently. The award event showcased some outstanding individuals in our community.

David campaigned hard to win as many votes as possible to clinch the title, and his hard work paid off.

David said:

“When you hear the nominees name, then and the winner is, you get goosebumps and all the emotions runs through your body, but when it’s your name that’s read out, that’s when it really hits home that the public votes recognised your hard work, and I want to thank everyone who took the time to vote”

David dedicated his award to his mother as he works everyday to try and better the lives of others, including his mum, through his voluntary charity work.
He added:

“I now plan to use this award to motivate me and launch a You Tube Channel to motivate and inspire others, like carers and Volunteers  to do more good work within their community, being a role model is a great honour and again I would like to thank those who took time to vote for me”

martin-fordWith thanks to Martin Ford. Councillor Martin Ford is to serve on a new Aberdeenshire Council working group set up to overhaul the authority’s governance arrangements.

Cllr Ford (Scottish Green Party, East Garioch ward) will represent the three Aberdeenshire councillors who are neither in the Council’s coalition administration or the SNP on the 14-member working group.

The new working group – to be known as the ‘Future Governance Working Group’ – was agreed at last Thursday’s (12 March) full council meeting.

The immediate need to change the Council’s governance arrangements results from the integration of health and social care – but other pressures, including an on-going financial squeeze, also point to a review being necessary.

Speaking during last Thursday’s full council debate, Cllr Ford described Aberdeenshire’s current governance structures as having been ‘tired for some time’. He urged that a bold approach is taken by the Working Group.

Cllr Ford said:

“The Future Governance Working Group has an important job to do. Some changes are needed because of new circumstances. Some changes are needed to address things that are currently not working well, or not as well as they should. Some changes are desirable as over-due improvements.

“For example, a public petitions committee was mooted in 2012. Yet the Council has still not established one.” 

Cllr Ford has identified a number of areas where he believes significant changes are needed. He said:

“I hope the Council will agree to strengthen the role of its Area Committees.

“The process for setting the Council’s budget has to change and include meaningful opportunities for public engagement and consultation. As well as public involvement, there must be a new approach to the scrutiny and challenge of proposals by councillors.

“It has been made ridiculously difficult for councillors to get issues of concern on to the agenda of Council meetings through submitting notices of motion. And this has been a deliberate policy of the Council. It is an essential democratic safeguard that individual elected councillors can raise issues at formal Council meetings.

“I believe the Council must take a fresh look at decision making in relation to cross-cutting priorities such as climate change. Decisions primarily about some different matter will often have knock-on effects for the Council’s efforts to cut greenhouse gas emissions, and we need to get better at checking for unintended consequences and secondary effects during the decision making process. Otherwise the Council can accidentally undermine its own policies.

“We also need to look for efficiencies in the decision making process. This is extremely important given on-going financial pressures.”

SNP MSPs Alex Salmond and Christian Allard have welcomed the “real progress” being made by NHS Grampian in addressing the recommendations of the Healthcare Improvement Scotland report published December last year.

Today’s update from NHS Grampian shows the work they are taking forward to recruit more nurses, better investigate and respond to complaints and develop sustainable plans to further improve unscheduled care.

The update comes ahead of Health Secretary Shona Robison’s visit to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary today.

Aberdeenshire East MSP Alex Salmond said:

“I am very pleased that the new leadership team at NHS Grampian are making real progress in implementing the Healthcare Improvement Scotland recommendations.

“I welcome the health board’s plans to recruit more nurses and take forward a strategy to make unscheduled care work better for patients.

“This SNP Government is committed to ensuring that this progress continues as is clear from the £49.1 million increase to the health board’s budget.

“This is the highest increases of any health board in Scotland and will bring NHS Grampian within 1% parity of NRAC, the NHS funding formula.”

North East MSP Christian Allard attended a NHS Grampian briefing for MSPs on Friday.

Commenting, Mr Allard (pictured) said:

“Staff at NHS Grampian are amongst the best working in NHS Scotland and they should be given high praise for the level of care they provide to North East patients. 

“Last week’s meeting with the NHS Grampian Board was very positive and this has been backed up by today’s update on the Healthcare Improvement Scotland action plan.”

A group of hoteliers inspired by the bravery of an Aberdeenshire teenager who is battling cancer has smashed the target of a fund-raising campaign set up in her name.

Aberdeen City and Shire Hotels’ Association (ACSHA) has handed over £45,000 to the Teenage Cancer Trust – more than double the size of the donation that it had initially hoped to make.

ACHSA members rallied round for the charity after learning how it was supporting 18-year-old Abigail Cox – the daughter of hotelier and association member Gary Cox – while she is undergoing treatment for Ewing’s sarcoma.

Abigail has received treatment for her illness – a rare bone cancer affecting children and adolescents – at units run by the Teenage Cancer Trust in Glasgow and Edinburgh. She has now completed a course of chemotherapy and will undergo an operation later this week to remove bone where the tumour started.

ACHSA decided to embark on the fund-raising campaign to show their support for the Cox family from Inverurie, and to highlight the work being carried out the by the Trust. Members handed over the final tally at the Aberdeen City and Shire Tourism Awards, and were joined by Abigail and her parents, who run The Northern Hotel in Aberdeen and Edward’s nightclub in Inverurie.

Abigail said:

“After a long and difficult year of treatments my life will soon be back to as normal as possible.

“The Teenage Cancer Unit at the Western General in Edinburgh really made my stay in hospital as easy and as comfortable as it could be. My year would have been so much more difficult and depressing without them, and I can’t thank them enough.

“You are surrounded by people your own age who can really relate and understand what you are going through and the nurses are always so friendly and positive. They help you to keep a smile on your face. Everyone involved in The Teenage Cancer Unit genuinely cares about you and your recovery.

“They treat you like a teenager and not just a cancer patient. The unit provided the best possible support for both me and my family.”

ACSHA chairman Chris McGuinness added:

“We thought that a £20,000 target was ambitious, so never in our wildest dreams did we consider that we would raise double that amount. I’m really proud of the way in which members have embraced this opportunity to support a charity which has been so instrumental in helping one of our own.

“The presentation was made all the more special by the fact that Abigail and her parents were able to join us on stage. It was great to see that Abigail has been responding well to her treatment, and I know that is in no small part down to the help she has been getting from the Teenage Cancer Trust.

“She has been receiving treatment in the south of Scotland, miles away from family and friends, and the fact that the Trust has been able to treat her in centres specifically for teenagers, alongside teenage patients, has helped her to remain positive.”

In addition to organising collections in hotels and setting up an online fund-raising page, hotel managers staged a Workathon in which they walked between member hotels and carried out tasks from serving drinks to cleaning floors at each venue. Some of the proceeds from ticket sales for the tourism awards was also donated to the cause.

Christine Jason, head of regional fund-raising (North) for the Teenage Cancer Trust, is full of praise for the work of ACHSA members and how they worked together.

She added:

“We have been overwhelmed by the enthusiasm and energy of everyone involved and this has resulted not only in a significant level of funds being raised in the North East but also an increased awareness of our work.  The Association has been instrumental in introducing our work to businesses in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire.

“The money raised through the Association will go towards ensuring every young person with cancer has access to expert support.  It will mean that they are treated in an age-appropriate environment and given the medical and emotional support that they need.”

Aberdeen City and Shire Hotels’ Association represents 43 independently operated hotels and conference venues. These hotels provide around 4,100 bedrooms in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire. The Association is committed to improving the quality and standard of hotel services and to furthering the overall standards of excellence and hospitality within the region.

An innovative garden project devised by Simeon Care for the Elderly will become a reality after securing £45,000 in funding.

The Aberdeen-based charity was delighted to find out it had been successful in the final of the Big Lottery Fund People’s Millions competition last night (Thursday November 27).

Simeon’s Golden Garden will provide a therapeutic haven for the 23 residents in the new care home they are building.

The home is taking shape but the outdoor space consists of piles and rubble and mud, which will now be transformed thanks to the funding.

Jeannie Carlson, Simeon Care for the Elderly manager, said the charity was overwhelmed with the support they received from the public.

“It has made such a huge difference in helping spread the word about The Golden Garden. The response we have received is just amazing and we are delighted as the process has helped more people find out about Simeon. Winning the funding means so much to us and will make such a difference to the residents as we can now fast-track the plans for The Golden Garden,” she said.

“We would like to thank everyone that took the time to vote for us as you have helped make the project a reality. For us, the garden will form an integral part of the care we provide residents here at Simeon. It is not just in the building, so much of the life of the Simeon community happens outside.”

The innovative garden plans will include a terrace with views towards the River Dee, seating alcoves taking their inspiration from seaside pavilions, a variety of alcoves with seating for groups, a hand-crafted wooden bridge, potting shed, food and flower patch, wildlife stations and personal patios leading from individual bedrooms. Carefully planned planting and features such as swing seats developed specifically for those with dementia are also included.

Jeannie Carlson added:

“Simeon is driven by a commitment to provide as much comfort and care as we possibly can. For so many elderly people, being outside is a great joy. It aids wellbeing and brings happiness into their lives, and for many, is something they treasured in their own homes. To be able to offer that same simple pleasure in a care home that is now their home is an essential support.

Dr Garuth Chalfront (pictured), a leading expert in the design, research and use of healing garden, therapeutic landscaping and dementia-friendly spaces, has developed the garden blueprint. It forms part of the new Simeon Care for the Elderly development, which is currently under construction in the grounds of the organisation’s existing facility at Cairnlee Road in Bieldside.

Simeon’s philosophy of care, compassion and companionship supports older people to have an active, meaningful and purposeful life in a community setting and provides dignified and compassionate care and end of life care, supporting the individual as well as their families. Future Choices is a disabilities charity based at Inchgarth Community Centre in Garthdee. It celebrates its sixth Birthday this month.

The charity has been helping the most vulnerable gain social inclusion since 2008, and it is growing daily while remaining voluntary and self-funded.

Recently, Sainsbury’s at Garthdee chose the group as its Local Charity of the Year.

Partnering up with other bodies doesn’t stop there though, as Future Choices is now affiliated to the Chest Heart & Stroke Scotland charity too.

Chairman David Forbes said:

“This support really strengthens our position within the city of Aberdeen, and furthermore, we have the support of Lawrence Milne Decorators, based in Berryden and Ellon who will for one year be donating proceeds of the five pence bag charge to Future Choices. I never ever thought that the charity would be where it is, but I’m thrilled it is where it is and it’s down to having an amazing dedicated team behind me.”

The charity members, who suffer from various physical disabilities, have seen their lives improved by the work of the charity. Its management is very much aware that there are more vulnerable adults out there. Future Choices wants to be able to spread its message to give them hope and the positivity to realise that social isolation doesn’t need to be a regular thing for them.

David added:

“Having my mum, who benefits from the charity, there by my side is the biggest motivation I could ever have. Being not only the chairman for the charity but her full time carer has its challenges, but I’ve seen her benefit from the group a lot, building friendships and having fun.”
