October Fun At Grampian Transport Museum

The Grampian Transport Museum will be welcoming visitors this October with a number of special activities taking place during the school holidays. With thanks to Martyn Smith.

A special guest exhibit will be on display in the museum from Monday 12th October.

Helping to celebrate 30 years since the original Back to the Future movie, the museum will be displaying a DeLorean DMC-12 – the car popularised in the cult movie trilogy. In the second instalment of the film the central character, Marty McFly, travels forward in time to Wednesday October 21 2015, the date our guest exhibit will then be departing on.

Alongside a standard DeLorean vehicle a number of replica props will be on display, including a detailed replica of the Hoverboard used in the movie.

These have been painstakingly re-created by Barry Thackery of Aberdeen, who has also turned his hand to creating an operational flying DeLorean, using a scale model of the movie car which has been married up to the chassis of a radio controlled drone.

Also taking place during the October break is the museum’s final rides afternoon of the season – Full Steam Ahead, which takes place on Thursday 15th October, from 1.30pm – 3.30pm.

The museum’s 1914 Sentinel Steam Waggon, the oldest fully functional Sentinel still in existence, will be offering museum visitors a ride around the outdoor circuit and will be joined by a 1:3 scale Burrell Steam traction engine, built in Ellon by blacksmith Willie Gill. The Burrell was purchased by Aberdeen City Council and was run regularly in the city’s Duthie Park, where it proved especially popular during the summer months.

A number of static displays will be on show too – a live steam 3.5” gauge Stevenson’s Rocket will be on show alongside a selection of miniature traction engines and railway locomotives.

Then the fun continues with a special Halloween Activity Afternoon on Friday 23^rd, from 1pm – 3.30pm. With Halloween activities, quizzes and crafts plus face painting, balloon modelling plus the museum will also welcoming Diana from ‘Once upon a tune’ who will be providing lots of fun through song and story.

Entry to these events is included in the museum’s standard admission which is £9.50 for adults, £7.50 for concessions and 2 children admitted FREE with every adult.

Grampian Transport Museum remains open daily from 10am – 4pm up until Sunday 25th October, giving visitors the chance to see fantastic displays including the Made in Scotland exhibition and Ferrari Enzo supercar, the only example in Scotland. There are daily quizzes for younger visitors to enjoy and the Travellers Rest tea room is open daily from 10.30am – 3.30pm.

Grampian Transport Museum will again be offering motoring enthusiasts the chance to clear out the garage or workshop with this year’s Autumn Autojumble.

The annual event, which takes place on Sunday 27th September, sees traders from across the country converge to sell a wide range of automotive parts, memorabilia, miscellanea and even vehicles.

One vehicle which is to go on display for sale this year is a 1987 Ford Fiesta XR2i which has been part of a key display inside the museum in 2015.

The Fiesta has spent the season next to the museum’s Rover SD1 Vitesse police car. The Rover found fame on the Channel 4 show ‘For the Love of Cars’ when broadcast in April.

Alongside the traditional categories this year’s Jumble has now been extended to include general car boot, trade and craft stalls ensuring there really is something for everyone. As well as providing the opportunity to clear space in the garage or shed, the Autojumble provides the ideal opportunity to find a new winter project.

Gates open to the public at 9am with admission just £3 for adults and children under the age of 16 are admitted free of charge.

The museum will also be offering reduced price admission, meaning visitors can enjoy the 2015 exhibition including the Made in Scotland display or the only Ferrari Enzo on show in Scotland – one of only 400 ever produced!

Anyone who wishes to book a stall can do so for just £12 in advance, which includes 2 complimentary passes to the museum. Entries will be accepted on the day at £15 on a first come, first served basis.

GTM Club Confirmed For World Final At Rockingham.

The Grampian Transport Museum (GTM) Young Engineers Club is enjoying another successful season following a podium finish at the Scottish heat of the Greenpower F24 championship.

The race, which took place at East Fortune on Sunday 6th September, saw the Alford team finish both races in 1st place with the Alford Bullet, while the team’s second vehicle – the Alford Spyder – finished in 2nd place.

The Young Engineers Club was formed in 2008 and competes annually in the international Formula 24 (F24) race organised by Greenpower.

Teams race against each other over two 90 minute races with the winner being the team that goes furthest using a standard set of batteries and motor. The team will now compete with both vehicles at the world final, which takes place at Rockingham racing circuit in Northamptonshire, on Sunday 11th October.

The team would like to thank all their supporters and helpers together with their 2015 sponsors which include BP, EnQuest, TAQA, Scots Bearings, Whittaker Engineering and the Rotary Club of Alford and District.

AllFord at Alford: Popular Event Returns This Sunday

This Sunday (Aug 16) more than 200 Fords will head for Alford for the second AllFord event, taking place at the Grampian Transport Museum.

Launched in 2014, AllFord at Alford is a showcase of everything ‘Fordie’ from 1908 to the present day and celebrates motoring for the masses.

A number of special entries have been received, including a rare Aberdeen bodied Model T van, owned by Les Coull of Keith.

Built in 1924 by Georgeson & Co of Aberdeen it is believed that the van spent its working life at a bakers in Bucksburn before entering into preservation.

Also making an appearance at this year’s AllFord will be the only Model T to have made it to the top of Ben Nevis. Having been taken to the foot of the hill by a group of enthusiasts to celebrate the models centenary it was taken apart in the car park before being lifted, piece by piece, to the top and then reassembled to celebrate the event. Descent from the summit was carried out in a similar manner, with the car being taken apart and then reassembled at the start!

Taking on a gruelling 850 mile round trip for this years show is Adrian Evans of Great Barr, Birmingham. Adrian will be travelling north in his 1969 MK2 Ford Cortina which won the 2014 Meguiars Club Showcase at the NEC, Birmingham.

The event will be supported by Ford UK who will be attending the event with a dedicated Ford Marquee, complete with Playstation driving simulator and brand ambassadors on hand to offer help and advice to enthusiasts. Arnold Clark, as part of the Ford stand, will showcase some of the latest models direct from the showroom.

The popular ‘Choice of the people’ award will once again allow visitors to vote for their favourite car of the show. Craft traders, specialist suppliers and accessories retailers will add to the show atmosphere of this unique event.

Vehicle entries are now closed for this year’s event. Public admission to AllFord is £5 for adults, with children under 16 admitted free.

Lotus Day At Transport Museum This Sunday

This Sunday 2nd August the Lotus Enthusiasts Group Scotland will be hosting “The Lotus Day” at the Grampian Transport Museum.

Now in its 4th year this popular event sees Lotus cars from all over Scotland in attendance.

50 years of Lotus cars will be on show, with examples from the early 1960’s up to the very latest production cars, capable of 0 – 60 mph times of less than 4 seconds and top speeds in excess of 170 mph!

The event has proved popular with museum visitors and club members alike, with club members given the unique opportunity not only to display their cars but also to take members of the public out for laps on the museum’s road circuit, between 2pm and 4pm.

In addition to the passenger rides there will also be a static display of some very rare cars including the first production Lotus Esprit and a Lotus Exige LF1, built to commemorate the 1st of 81 Formula 1 victories which was achieved by Sir Stirling Moss at Monaco in 1960.

Lotus is a marque synonymous with motor racing and their race pedigree can be seen clearly in the road cars they produce.

Admission to The Lotus Day is included in the museum’s standard admission – £9.50 for adults, £7.50 for concessions and 2 children are admitted FREE with every adult.

Preceding Lotus Day the museum will be treating visitors to a day of nostalgia on Thursday 30th July with a one-off 90’s Day – along with a soundtrack from the era, the museum will also be running 90’s themed quizzes for younger visitors to enjoy.

Visitors to 90’s day will also enjoy reduced admission, with adults just £2.80 or a family ticket, priced at just £5, admitting 2 adults and up to 4 children.

AllFord at Alford: More Cars Confirmed For Event

The Grampian Transport Museum, Alford, will once again be welcoming Ford fans when AllFord returns for the second year on Sunday 16th August.

Launched in 2014, AllFord at Alford is a celebration of everything ‘Fordie’ from 1908 to the present day.

Over 200 vehicles took part in last year’s inaugural event, with vehicles ranging from standard family cars to high spec rally vehicles and rare examples that caused such great excitement at the dawn of the motoring era.

The organisers are delighted to announce that Ford UK will be supporting this year’s event, ensuring an impressive line up of the very latest Ford models straight from the showroom. There will also be a dedicated Ford Marquee, with Playstation driving simulator and dedicated brand ambassadors on hand to offer advice to enthusiasts.

Over 100 vehicles entries have already been received, including a pair of Model T fords dating from the early 1900s entered by James Gray on behalf of the Fraserburgh Vintage Car Rally. A pair of 1997 Mustangs are joined by numerous Fiestas and Escorts, including several MK2 examples – with the second generation of the popular vehicle celebrating its 40th birthday this year.

Made In Scotland – This Sunday AT GTM

The Grampian Transport Museum in Alford will be welcoming surviving examples from the Scottish Motor Industry to a one off event this Sunday.

Made in Scotland – an event running in conjunction with an exhibition of the same name in the museum building – will showcase everyday cars, such as the Hillman Imp – which were produced at the Rootes plant in Linwood, Paisley.

A 1973 Davrian Imp racing car, owned by renowned Imp expert Dave Cooper of Midhurst, West Sussex, will also be on display and will in fact be driven some 600 miles to the event.

Dave will also be talking to the museum’s Young Engineers team and offering advice on how best to restore the museum’s own 1965 Hillman Imp.

The First Group Heritage Trust and Aberdeen & District Transport Preservation Trust will display a number of buses, once operated in Aberdeen and bodied by Alexander of Falkirk. The museum’s 1914 Sentinel Steam Waggon – the oldest fully functional example remaining – will offer museum visitors the chance of a ride around the circuit, as well as demonstrating the difference between steam and motor lorries of its era.

A 1927 Rolls Royce 20HP, which was bodied by Claud Hamilton of Aberdeen and now owned by Tom Muir of Kirkcaldy, will be making the journey north for Made in Scotland and joined by a pair of stunning Arrol Johnston vehicles which are also a part of the family collection.

A purpose built single seater racing car, the GWR Raptor, designed by former F1 Lotus designer Martin Ogilvie and built by former Scottish Champion and 2 time British Hillclimb champion Graeme Wight Junior, will be taking part in a demonstration on the museum’s circuit.

Over 5,000 Enjoy SpeedFest15 at GTM In Alford

Record crowds attended SpeedFest15 on Sunday 5 July. Over 5,000 enjoyed sunny weather at the GTM in Alford, and a show which was opened by Dai Heather Hayes’ aerobatic display.

Organised by James and Sarah Parker and Tony Yule and their team of marshals and assistants from Black Dog Events.

As well as the annual Pursuits, new to SpeedFest this year was the Kinghorn Alford Drag. Andrew Cowie’s 800bhp Nissan Skyline finished first and was awarded a prize kindly donated by RA Plates.

Crowds enjoyed the spectacle and sounds of the 24,000cc Napier Bentley.

Motoring Journalist Simon Taylor from the Hollywood film Rush demonstrated the Charlie Bang slingshot dragster and was joined by Scotland’s fastest accelerating car, Colin Millar’s Flying Fyfer.

James Parker wowed the crowds again with smoke, noise and speed from the Indianapolis 500 pole setting Jim Robbins Special (pictured above).

Grampian Kart Club demonstrated their exciting karts showcasing some champions of the future, and Blata UK provided entertainment with a mini moto race.

Joining our SpeedBirds were Julia Stewart and her team of catsuited-pit girls adding glamour to an impressive line up of trade sands including Park’s Motor Group, Sytners (Lamborghini Edinburgh), Leven Car Company, Murray Motor Company, Aberdeen Porsche centre and Glack Attack.

Stig’s Scottish cousin, the ‘Stag’ was seen wondering around the site and then ‘stole’ the 8 litre Dodge Ram pick up and started drifting and smoking it around the track until the Black Dog marshals red-flagged him to a stop and security were brought in to remove him. In true form the Stag was clearly not impressed at being manhandled off the site.

Organisers Tony and James said ‘The record crowds here enjoyed a day full of on-track excitement, high octane demonstrations and we were delighted that the slick timings gave non-stop thrills’. Tony was delighted to have a head-to-head with co-organiser James in the well-loved vintage Frazer Nashes, ‘As well as seeing all the modern supercars at the event, It was a great experience for me to see how the 80-year old car handles as speed, I real eye-opener – I tried my best but I was beaten by its owner (maybe he’ll let me drive it again …) Great fun’.

A great display of exotic and iconic sports cars was supplemented by GT Scotland who had an impressive line-up, including a Bugatti Veyron.

Speed Into Action For Clan Cancer Support

A cavalcade of the world’s finest supercars will roar into action next month to raise funds for a leading north-east charity.

From Ferraris and MacLarens to Aston Martins, Porsches and Audi R8s, petrolheads are in for a treat when the annual SuperCLAN event descends on Aberdeen on July 12.

The gathering, organised by Scoro Solutions, was first held in 2011 and attracts the north-east’s most prestigious cars to some of the region’s finest roads to raise funds for CLAN Cancer Support, with more than £32,000 being raised over the past five years.

Susan Crighton, CLAN fundraising manager, said:

“The SuperCLAN event gets bigger and bigger each year and we are hugely grateful to Scoro for organising it. It really is incredible seeing such impressive cars being driven through Aberdeen, which is such a treat for both the passengers and onlookers.

“All money raised through driver entry fees and donations on the day will go towards supporting anyone affected by any type of cancer at any time, from diagnosis onwards. We are all looking forward to the SuperCLAN event, and are particularly delighted that Emily and Michelle Findlay, who are both service users, will get to enjoy it as passengers.”

Emily Findlay was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, a rare cancer affecting children and young people, when she was just 14 years-old. After two years of treatment and a further 18 months of remission, the cancer returned last year. The 19-year-old is a self-confessed supercar fan and can’t wait to be a passenger in one of the luxurious vehicles.

She said:

“I was so excited when I was offered the chance to accompany a driver during the SuperCLAN event. I love cars and being given the opportunity to be driven in one is absolutely amazing. It will be a great spectacle for onlookers too and help raise money for CLAN, which is a cause very close to my heart.”

Also a supercar enthusiast, her mother Michelle is looking forward to taking part in the SuperCLAN event.

She said:

“I have been looking after Emily, mostly from home, since her diagnosis. I am a great supporter of CLAN as it has played a vital role in supporting us at times of need throughout Emily’s cancer journey. Emily is going through gruelling treatment at the moment and getting the opportunity to have some fun whilst supporting CLAN is very welcomed.”

The luxury convoy will leave the Scoro Solutions headquarters in Altens and follow a picturesque route via Kildrummy Castle before heading to Glenfiddich Distillery for 12.30pm, and finishing at the Hilton Treetops at 3.30pm. The general public is invited to have a look at the supercars at the Glenfiddich and Hilton Treetops stops.

Organiser Ross Gatt, director of oil and gas recruitment specialists Scoro Solutions, said:

“My colleague Scott and I are both extremely passionate about CLAN Cancer Support Charity and the services that they provide, and also have a shared love of supercars. It is fantastic that we have been able to enjoy our passion through this event and help CLAN at the same time. There is always a great atmosphere on the day and we are really looking forward to it.”

CLAN Cancer Support is an independent charity which provides comfort support and information, free of charge, for anyone, of any age, affected by any type of cancer. CLAN aims to support people to reduce anxiety, stress and to increase their ability to cope with the effects of a serious illness.

SpeedFest 2015 This Sunday, July 5

The Transport Museum’s events programme included SPEEDFEST for the first time in 2010 as a stripped down celebration of post 1955 fast cars. This Sunday will see the sixth SpeedFest and the event promises to be the biggest and best yet.

SpeedFest is now by far the largest car event held on the GTM site and must be one of the most action packed motor events in the UK.

For 2015 organisers have assembled an amazing programme. Track activity includes, drifting, mini motos, racing karts, dragsters, rally stage and top of the bill, the unique SpeedFest pursuits. The pursuits are a chance for supercars to demonstrate their awesome performance on the museum test track. Over 100 specially invited performance cars take part in this amazing spectacle.

SpeedFest brings to Scotland and the NE many great rarities. Numerous classic sports rally and race cars are attending this year including the methanol burning 160mph Indy Racer known as the Jim Robins Special that held pole position in the Indianapolis 500 in 1955 and a ‘Sling Shot’ dragster that won the record in the USA in 1966.

A massive 24 litre Napier Bentley vintage racer will be put through its paces evoking a period when aircraft engines gave race meetings very distinctive sounds and smells! Another visiting dragster will be the 1150bhp nitro burning ‘Outlaw Anglia’ that will give a tyre burning demonstration of outrageous power!

Modern supercars will be very much involved with a 727bhp McLaren P1 that also boasts another 176bhp from its supporting electric motor that can be used to save fuel or assist the main twin turbo V8. A Ferrari 458 Speciale completes a line up of Ferraris and other Italian supercars plus a genuine Group 4 Lancia Stratos with impressive competition history.

The motor trade are supporting SpeedFest more than ever this year with Lamborghini, Rolls Royce, McLaren, Maserati, Porsche, Lotus, Bentley and Aston Martin all in attendance. Collectively the trade bring SpeedFest right up to date by showing the latest models in an historical context.

Trade stands, food stalls, rides and a chance to view the museum’s 2015 exhibition make SpeedFest a very special day. There is a free park and ride provided by the Alford Bus Collection and better still the first 600 to arrive are treated to a couple of laps of the track in one of the participating cars in the ‘Early Bird’ rides for the first hour from 11am. Gates open at 10.45 for a day to remember!
