The inaugural NESLTA ‘Green’ level boys and girls invitational competitions, held at Westburn Tennis Centre, were voted a great success Rubislaw’s Jamie Connell emerging victorious from the eight contestants ahead of runner-up Angus Edwards (Cults), Harrshra Pradeep Kumar (DL Aberdeen) in third and fourth placed Greg Smith (Alford).

In the girl’s final, Rachel Gibson made it a Rubislaw double edging out Amy Spiers (Cults).

District coach Vikki Paterson, who organised the event, was delighted with the standard of tennis on display. “It was extremely competitive with some fantastic tennis on display and all of those who participated said they’d really enjoyed the experience.”

Westburn Tennis Centre also hosted a Tennis Scotland Under 8 Red competition in which Cameron Jappy (Westhill) and Ewan Smith (Westhill/Alford) continued to impress, with Cameron came out of top on this occasion, beating Ewan 7-5, 7-3 in the final.

Benjamin Hine and Sam Walker finished in 3rd and 4th place.

The finals of the NESLTA ROGY Under 8 and Under 9 events at Westburn saw Westhill’s Cameron Jappy lift the boys under 8 event with a 10-7, 5-10, 10-3 final victory over Harrshra Pradeep Kumar (DL Aberdeen) in the final.

Alford youngster Ewan Smith was third, with Ross Grant (Westhill) fourth.

The under 8 girls title went to Abigail Doran (Stonehaven) with Varada Kamate (Cults) the runner-up.

Jamie Connel (Rubislaw) won the Boys 9’s with a 10-6 win over Harrshra Pradeep Kumar, with the girls title going to Jodie Harris (Stonehaven), with Varada Kamate again the runner-up.

Dave Macdermid brings Voice readers news of the latest outcomes in City tennis competitions.

This Sunday sees the third of the monthly Glacier Energy Masters Under 12 event at Westburn Tennis Centre where Patrick Young will be looking to consolidate his position at the top of the leader board after the opening two events.
The Stonehaven youngster is currently on 19 points ahead of Cameron Edwards (Cults) on 14 and Rubislaw’s Conor McMahon on 12.

Congratulations to the two North East teams that took part in the ‘Orange’ pre-Christmas competition at Stirling, with the ‘North East Tigers’ winning the 11-team event and the ‘North East Lions’ finishing third.

Representing the Tigers were Harrsha Pradeep Kumar, Jamie Connell, Cameron Jappy and Ewan Smith, while the Lions were represented by Gabe Kennedy, Jodie Harris, Rosie Sterk and Varada Kamate.

District coach Vikki Paterson accompanied the squads.

It’s a busy weekend for Rubislaw tennis club with the staging of the second weekend of the Rubislaw Grand Prix in addition to the club being presented with Tennis Scotland’s top quality accreditation award.

Top seed in the men’s event is Graeme Matthew (David Lloyd Aberdeen) who is seeded to meet the host club’s Martin Harbord in the final and if the seedings go to plan, the women’s final will be an all-Rubislaw affair between Sheila Williams and Fiona Hamilton.

On Saturday afternoon Tennis Scotland’s Tennis Development Manager for the area, Kirsty McRae, will present the Clubmark award to the club in recognition of the hard work undertaken behind the scenes to promote the sport at all levels.

Prior to the presentation, club coach Darren Nicol will lead a series of coaching demonstrations and social tennis with a firework display rounding off proceedings.

Westburn Tennis Centre hosts the second of the six monthly Glacier Energy Services winter Under 12 Masters on Sunday with Ross Martin (DL Aberdeen) and Patrick Young (Stonehaven) looking to repeat their successes of last month.

Also taking part are Conor McMahon (Rubislaw), Michael Whelan (Cults), Anthony Low(Udny), Cameron Edwards (Cults), Syzmon Kierkiaw (David Lloyd Aberdeen) and Fin Pearson (Banchory).

Congratulations to 8 year old Cults youngster Cameron Jappy (pictured) who has topped the North County leaderboard at Under 9 level and been presented with a medal by the LTA in recognition of his achievements.

The Mile End Primary pupil, who is coached by Vikki Paterson, has played in several tournaments in recent months, and has just progressed to orange from red level.
