Local disabled Charity Future Choices, which is based at Inchgarth Community Centre, Garthdee has come forward to
help the Primary 7 pupils of Kaimhill with their fundraising
efforts.

The Charity which provides social inclusion became aware of the pupils’ fundraising efforts and wanted to do all they could to help, so they donated £100 to help boost their efforts.

Chairman of Future Choices, David Forbes said:

“As a completely self funded charity, we absolutely know how difficult it is to fundraise, so anything we could do to try and help the children, we aim to.”

The P7 pupils are currently fundraise to go on a school trip to Cromdale Outdoor Centre later on in the year ut need much needed funds to make this dream a reality. They have made this trip an annual one so want to continue with the trip this year.

David added:

“Seeing the pupils so happy, that’s what it’s all about and as a charity, we strive to get Vulnerable adults out enjoying themselves, so to be able to help local school children  try to reach their goal is simply a positive thing.”

A cosier winter is in sight for homeless people across Scotland this winter, thanks to the Scottish Women’s Institutes (SWI) picking up their knitting needles and casting on in support of a national campaign to help make a difference to the lives of Big Issue vendors.

As Scotland’s largest women’s organisation, and with many members talented sewers and knitters, the SWI is throwing its weight behind The Big Issue Foundation’s Big Knitathon to ensure that this year’s effort is the biggest and best to date.

Throughout November, the women will gather to knit garments, raise funds and hold events, all of which will benefit homeless people in Scotland. And, in a powerful message to get others involved, they are providing two Big Knitters – expert knitters who will help promote the Big Knitathon by attending events, posting tips online and answering knitting queries.

Although the SWI is no stranger to supporting important issues and worthy causes, it’s the first time that the 17,000 member organisation has been involved in the Big Knitathon – and members are determined that their backing will make a big difference to the lives of people who have become homeless. The SWI will be working alongside Hobbycraft, another key supporter of the campaign, with all 83 stores taking part nationwide.

As the leading ladies and resident ‘Big Knitters’ for the campaign, mother and daughter Anne (73) and Jane Muirhead (47) are determined to encourage all members – from novice to seasoned professional – to keep their knitting needles by their side for the month of November.

Gargunnock SWI member and Stirling Federation chairman Anne says,

“For as long as I can remember we, as an organisation, have gone above and beyond to support local and national causes. We’re passionate about making a difference and helping others in need.

“I’ve been a member for 40 years and I still love the fact that when we work together, we achieve extraordinary results. I, and many of my fellow members, were taught how to knit in primary one and so have had the best part of 70 years to perfect the skill – and practice we do!

“This is a fantastic cause with very worthy recipients so between our scarfs, gloves, blankets and hats, we’ll make sure The Big Issue vendors don’t feel a chill this winter.”

The Big Knitathon is an annual campaign to encourage knitters across the country to create clothing for the vendors, sell the finished articles to raise funds, or hold events with all proceeds going to The Big Issue Foundation. Over the last three years over 2000 knitters have got their needles out for the Big Knitathon and raised over £22,500 for the campaign.

For The Big Knitathon, SWI members are being encouraged to teach novice knitters, share skills, donate knitted goods organise fundraising events and document their knitting journey online through social media.

They are also encouraged to attend the nationwide Hobbycraft event on Saturday 14th November. Held in all 83 stores across the UK, the event will give members a chance to knit together, share skills, share patterns and enjoy a cake or two – all in aid of Scotland’s Big Issue vendors.

Stephen Robertson, CEO of The Big Issue Foundation, says,

“Winter is an especially difficult time for our sellers, especially when the end of the working day doesn’t provide any respite from the harsh conditions. The Big Knitathon enables everyone to help make our sellers’ days and nights easier by buying, selling or donating hand knitted items. This year we’re delighted to have support from the SWI, and know that the warmth of their fundraising and knitting support will be felt by our sellers through the winter’s chill.”

Working outdoors in the freezing winter months, vendors will be protected from the chilling Scottish winds and cold temperatures with cosy knitted hats, scarves and fingerless gloves. Knitters can also donate individual squares that will then be made into patchwork blankets providing some extra warmth during the coldest months of the year.

Joining in with the Big Knitathon is easy. SWI members can submit knitted goods or raised funds to their nearest Hobbycraft store throughout November. Mud loving runners are being urged to get dirty and put their backing behind a leading north-east charity. CLAN Cancer Support is the official local charity of the inaugural Mud Madness Aberdeen event which promises fun, mud and laughs for all the family with 3km and 5km courses to test all ability levels.

The fun event is being held on Saturday (October 24) at the Lochter Activity Centre and will include demanding natural obstacles and water-based challenges.

CLAN currently has 62 participants signed up to run the race on their behalf and is urging people to support them by taking part. The charity will be on hand on the day to cheer their supporters on as part of the volunteering team helping to run the event.

Susan Crighton, CLAN’s fundraising manager, said:

“CLAN is delighted to have been chosen as the local charity for what is shaping up to be a fantastic day. This is a great opportunity for people of all ages to have some fun, get muddy and help raise money to help us continue our provision of free support services to anyone affected by cancer across the north and north-east of Scotland.

All things purple will be the name of the game this month as a leading north-east cancer charity urges people to adopt the colour in its support. With thanks to Phil Moar, Account Manager, Citrus Mix.

CLAN pic2Singer songwriter Prince may have made it famous but purple is also at the heart of CLAN Cancer Support and it is encouraging individuals, businesses, schools and groups to get involved with its annual fund and awareness raising event.
Go Purple for CLAN is held throughout September every year and sees people throughout north and north-east Scotland adopt the colour for a day.

From lighting up a building, wearing purple and planning a purple party to dyeing your hair, selling purple cakes and creating a purple window or reception display in your business or shop, there is no shortage of innovative ways in which people can get involved.

The month-long event was first held in 2013 as part of the charity’s 30th anniversary celebrations, with schools across the region, as well as Marischal College turning purple in support.

Due to its popularity, the colourful day has become a main stay in the charity’s event calendar and Susan Crighton, CLAN’s fundraising manager, is encouraging people to take part.

She said:

“We’re looking for people to pick a date in September and show their support to CLAN. This could be in any shape from having a wear it purple day to holding a special purple only bake sale – the opportunities are endless.

“We’re looking for individuals, businesses, groups and schools to get involved and we’ve already had a number of places sign up to take part. Of course, there is a fundraising element to the month-long event but it is a really important awareness raiser for us as we want as many people as possible, throughout the areas we have a presence within, to be aware of CLAN and the services it can offer.

“Our own wellbeing centres, including CLAN House in Aberdeen, as well as our range of shops will also be taking part, with a range of purple items and clothing being stocked which could be a help to those looking to take part in their own business or school.

“This is one of our most fun organised events and gives people the chance to make a difference to the lives of those affected by cancer in the north and north-east of Scotland.”

Players and members of Aberdeenshire RFC have come together to raise donations for local charity Instant Neighbour.
The Woodside club has been collecting items throughout the last month and has managed to raise a grand total of 202kg of bric-a-brac and 17kg of food which will go towards supporting those in need in and around Aberdeen.

Aberdeenshire RFC club president Alasdair Farquharson said:

“I’d like to thank all those players, both past and present, and members of the club who have come together to generously support our efforts in helping Instant Neighbour.

“To raise such a fantastic total really is testament to the efforts shown throughout the last month and it is great to be able to help a charity that is located in the community that we play out of. It really is our way of giving something back to the local area.”

Susan Cheyne, business development manager of Instant Neighbour, said:

“This is excellent and will certainly help us in our quest to support those hit by poverty.”

Among other charitable endeavours, a group of players, friends and family of the club volunteered in last weekend’s Celebrate Aberdeen parade, lending a helping hand to the North East Disabled War Veterans.

The parade itself saw thousands of people take to the streets of Aberdeen to celebrate the tireless work of the city’s third sector organisations in a display of colour and fun.

Now, the club will turn its attention to this Saturday’s opening league game as the 1st XV face a repeat of last season’s opening fixture when they travel to Fife to take on Kirkcaldy RFC.
Aberdeenshire RFC are a BT National League Division 2 side situated in the north of Aberdeen.

In addition to the club’s three senior teams, Aberdeenshire has a burgeoning ladies and junior team.

Hospital corners will be the order of the day when a new competition is held in Aberdeen next month. The city is to play host to the inaugural Scottish Bed Making Championship on Thursday, 06 August.

The brainchild of local children’s charity Cash for Kids, the event forms part of its fundraising efforts for this year’s Bed Appeal.

The appeal, which officially launched earlier this month, aims to provide underprivileged children in north-east Scotland with a bed of their own and local disabled youngsters with specialist beds.

The charity hopes this year’s Bed Appeal will raise around £25,000 to purchase beds for more than 100 local underprivileged and disabled children.

The Scottish Bed Making Championship will be staged at Kingswells’ Village Urban Resort and is expected to attract entries from hotels, guest houses, care providers and hospitals in north-east Scotland.

Teams of four will be challenged to make a double bed – fitting sheets, pillow slips and duvet covers – as quickly as possible, before then making a bed which will be judged on its presentation. Points will be awarded for each task, with the two highest scoring teams then taking part in a bed race to be crowned Scottish Bed Making Champions.  The winners will also win a corporate bowling night courtesy of Codona’s.

Cash for Kids charity manager Michele Binnie said:

“We are very excited to be launching the Scottish Bed Making Championship, which will be an important part of the 2015 Bed Appeal. The appeal highlights the issues of poverty and disability that families here in the north-east are facing.

“The championship is open to any team that wants to show off its bed making prowess, whether they’re from the hospitality and care industries or another sector entirely. Cash for Kids is grateful to Village Urban Resort Aberdeen for getting behind the event and we look forward to a great evening on Thursday, 06 August.”

“The Scottish Bed Making Championship is a fantastic initiative to raise funds for this important appeal. It gives housekeeping teams in hotels and guest houses, and nursing and care staff a chance to shine at something they have to do proficiently and speedily each day.

“The championship is not just about making a bed quickly, but also presenting it well. The judges will be looking for crisp hospital corners and well plumped pillows. It will no doubt be a fun and competitive event, and one that we hope our hospitality colleagues across the north-east, and further afield, will get behind.”

Disability charity Momentum Skills has announced details of their next fundraising event.
Beechgrove Garden presenters Jim McColl and Carole Baxter will be answering questions at a Gardener’s Question Time on Wednesday 29th April in the Inverurie Town Hall at 7.30pm. Joining Jim (pictured) and Carole on the panel will be locally based horticultural advisor and soft fruit specialist, Colin Stirling.

The evening will be hosted by STV news presenter Chris Harvey. They have all given their time in supporting this, the very first Gardener’s Question Time in aid of Momentum Skills.

Momentum is a leading not-for-profit organisation providing rehabilitation, training and care services for disabled and socially excluded people in Aberdeen and North East at their Centre in Migvie House, Aberdeen.

They empower people to gain the skills and confidence they need to live independently and to fulfil employment goals. Momentum’s services help a wide range of people, including those with a brain injury, spinal injury, mental health difficulty, physical or learning disability, all in the areas of employment and training, job retention and community rehabilitation.

Momentum Fundraiser Michael Jamieson said:

“We are most grateful to Jim, Carole, Colin and Chris for giving their time and expertise to help raise funds to support the continuing work of Momentum in the North East.

Having made a return to Scottish television screens earlier this year, Stars in their Eyes is also back, live on stage, in the heart of the Garioch for the fifth year running.

The show, staged by local film and theatre company Right Here Productions, has so far raised around £6.5k for local charities and for 2015 has gained celebrity endorsement in the form of a good luck video from the TV host Mathew Kelly.

Inverurie’s very own Stars in their Eyes Mathew Kelly look-a-like, Dan Greavey says:

“Every year we raise money for charity and we are hoping that this year will be our best yet.We are delighted that this year the real Mathew was willing to give his time to personally wish us good luck!”

As advance preparations get under way for the Easter Saturday event, organiser Alison Telfer advises early booking since the 2014 event sold out well in advance.
