A north-east charity is set to get a sweet boost after establishing a partnership with a leading chocolatier.

Jamie Hutcheon of Cocoa Ooze, which specialises in unique handmade chocolate, and his team are hoping to raise awareness and funds through the link with Mental Health Aberdeen (MHA).

Employees will undertake a range of fundraising activities in the next 12 months to support the charity, which provides support services, counselling and advice to people affected by challenges related to mental health and wellbeing.

This includes emotional and practical support; information and advice; support with helping overcoming social isolation; links and access to other community resources; and activities promoting mental wellbeing.

Cocoa Ooze is planning to hold a charity dinner for MHA, as well as donating raffle prizes and a variety of other activities throughout the year.

Jamie said:

“Cocoa Ooze is delighted to be supporting Mental Health Aberdeen as our charity of the year. We chose the organisation because of the crucial work it does to help people throughout the north-east.

“Mental health is not spoken about enough and it affects a large number of people, who can often find it difficult to reach out for help. It can feel like a secret illness in some respects which people feel ashamed about and we want to help change that perception.

“It is a topic that should be discussed without stigma, and we hope to make a difference through the events and activities we will be involved in over the next twelve months.”

Astrid Whyte, chief executive of MHA, said gestures like that of the Cocoa Ooze team are even more crucial than ever in the current climate.

She said:

“We were absolutely delighted that Jamie and the team at Cocoa Ooze have chosen Mental Health Aberdeen as their charity of the year. In the current economic climate support like this is particularly appreciated and we are looking forward to building a relationship with them.

A group of Aberdeen hoteliers has been working tirelessly to raise funds for a leading dementia charity, and is set to reach a five figure fundraising goal. Aberdeen City and Shire Hotels’ Association (ACSHA) has raised over £13,000 for Alzheimer Scotland so far, and is confident that it will increase this to £20,000 by its AGM in April.

As part of its fundraising effort, ACSHA recently auctioned a bottle of Pol Roger Vintage Cap 1943 champagne for an impressive £800.

The prize, which also included a meal at Ardoe House Hotel & Spa and a bottle of White Label Pol Roger, was won by Calum Richardson, who runs The Bay Fish & Chips, Stonehaven. After placing the winning bid, Mr Richardson offered an additional lot comprising of outside catering which raised an additional £1,000.

Mariner Hotel owner Mike Edwards, who donated the champagne, is spearheading ACSHA’s fundraising effort, and believes the organisation is well on its way to reaching its target. He says,

“It’s incredibly heart-warming to see so many hoteliers working together to raise funds for a cause as worthwhile as dementia care and research.

“We are delighted to have raised so much money from auctioning the champagne, and hope to continue in a similar vein as we push closer to our £20,000 target over the next few months.

“I hope that Calum enjoys the champagne, and that he celebrated his winning bid in suitable style – with fizz and chips!”

ACSHA will continue its fundraising efforts over the coming months, starting with a 24 hour endurance relay on static bikes which will take place in a number of hotels across the region. The organisation has also partnered with the Deeside Brewery to create a specially labelled lager which will be sold in local hotels with all profits going to Alzheimer Scotland.

Alzheimer Scotland is ACSHA’s nominated charity for 2015/16, and it is hoped that the money raised will go some way to funding its operations in the north east, including a newly opened resource centre in Aberdeen city centre. In addition to monetary donations, a number of ACSHA members have joined the Dementia Friends initiative, which seeks to make all venues more welcoming and hospitable for those with dementia and their carers.

Mr Edwards’ father, David, was once a familiar face in the hospitality trade in Aberdeen, and was diagnosed with vascular dementia in 2008 at the age of just 59. There are currently around 90,000 people across Scotland diagnosed with dementia, including around 3,500 under the age of 65. In Aberdeen alone there are almost 300 people living with dementia under the age of 65.

Aberdeen City and Shire Hotels’ Association represents 49 independently operated hotels and conference venues, along with a further nine associate members. These hotels provide around 4,500 bedrooms in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire. ACSHA is committed to improving the quality and standard of hotel services and to furthering the overall standards of excellence and hospitality within the region.

Mental Health Aberdeen (MHA) has forged a link with an innovative charity which offers a therapeutic animal service. With thanks to Jessica Murphy, Senior Account Executive, Citrus:Mix.

MHA owl and pussycat1The leading north-east charity recently visited The Owl and The Pussycat Centre in Maud, which gives people the chance to have a positive experience with birds of prey, including the owl stars of Harry Potter, Eral and
Hedwig.

Service users in MHA’s Companions Befriending Service and their companions had a magical time on the visit, which was used as an opportunity to get out and about in the community, have fun and build relationships with peers.

Flora Todd, manager of MHA Companions Befriending, is currently looking for volunteers to take on a befriending role within the charity.

She said:

“Our service users and their companions thoroughly enjoyed themselves at The Owl and The Pussycat Centre, and we would like to thank everyone there for making us so welcome. We would love to repeat visits like this as they are so beneficial in helping our service users combat feelings of isolation and embrace day to day life. Interaction with animals and birds is a great tool for improving a person’s wellbeing.

“Companionship can make an incredible difference to a person’s wellbeing and it was fantastic to see our befrienders and service users interacting with the owls and having such a good time. We are currently on the look-out for volunteers to join our pool of befrienders in Peterhead, Fraserburgh, Banff, Turriff and surrounding rural areas. It is a fantastically rewarding role to take on and while it has its challenges, the transformation it can bring about to someone’s life is incredible.

“Volunteers befrienders can help in so many different ways, from going out for coffee, helping build their self-confidence and learning new skills to attending local activities such as exercise classes and arts or cultural groups. They are also very much a listening ear. We would urge anyone interested to get in touch with us and find out more about becoming a befriender.”

A committed network of befriending volunteers has served the north-east through MHA for a number of years but the charity is working to expand the service.

Full training is provided to all volunteers, who must be aged 18 and over, and the charity has an experienced team leading the programme. All out of pocket expenses are reimbursed and the next induction training course will begin in February.

A ceilidh held in aid of Mental Health Aberdeen (MHA) has brought in thousands of pounds to help the charity.
Employees at oil and gas consultancy ADIL danced their way to raising £3,000 for MHA – their chosen charity of the year.

Staff at ADIL have not just been donning their dancing shoes to support the charity – earlier this year they also pulled up their sleeves, gave up their spare time and helped MHA paint its offices.

The company’s continued support has so far brought in more than £6,400.

Astrid Whyte, chief executive of MHA, said:

“The support we receive from companies in Aberdeen is so important and makes such a difference to us. Staff at ADIL have raised a fantastic amount for us already throughout the year and we would like to thank them for their generous efforts so far.

“We are particularly appreciative of gestures like this in the current economic climate. Demand for our services continues to grow throughout the north-east and support like this is invaluable to us as we work hard to meet requirements. Holding events also helps us to build up our profile and make people aware of what we do, as well as letting them know we are here to help.

“We work throughout Aberdeen and the north-east and there is a strong need for the services we offer, which range from our Companions Befriending Service to youth counselling sessions. The Simeon Care Home has received a ‘moving in’ gift from Aberdeen Asset Management in the shape of a donation towards the purchase of furnishings.

Simeon Care for the Elderly in Aberdeen has received its first ‘moving in’ present as residents settle into their new care facility.

The charity has been given a £7,000 grant from the Aberdeen Asset Management Charitable Foundation, which will be used towards purchasing new furniture for Simeon House.

The donation caps off an exciting time for Simeon, with 23 residents having now moved into the brand new Simeon House in Aberdeen.

The  home was built after the charity launched the biggest fundraising drive in its history, raising nearly £1.3 million. Built on land at Cairnlee Road and designed by Camphill Architects, it features dementia-friendly design, including an innovative Golden Garden which provides a therapeutic haven for residents, and a commitment to energy efficient technology.

Gayle Johnston, Simeon Care for the Elderly’s fundraising manager, said:

“It is fantastic for everyone at Simeon to finally be in our new home. It has been a long process to get to this point and it means a great deal to all of us.

“This generous grant from the Aberdeen Asset Management Charitable Foundation has been the icing on the cake and helped us kit out our home in style.

“We are also grateful for their support earlier this year as a group of employees kindly volunteered in our garden. It is efforts like this that make all the difference to us as a charity.

“After just a week, the residents are settling in well and very much enjoying the new home and Golden Garden.

“We are delighted our vision is now a reality. We would like to give a heartfelt thanks to everyone who has supported us since we launched our New Lease of Life fundraising campaign to bring in money to create our dream home.  It has been a challenging journey but the kindness and generous support of individuals, local businesses, charitable trusts and community groups has got us here.”

The daughter of a 93 year old elderly resident with dementia explained how the environs and staff ensure that the care facility home-from-home feel.

“It feels like home and the staff are always patient and attentive. They understand mum’s past and they let her do things that are purposeful, like help fold the laundry. Each night they put my mum’s hair rollers in because they understand how important that simple thing is to her peace of mind. Taking the route of residential care can be seen in our society as the family failing the elderly.

“However, with the care that mum receives at Simeon, I feel that both our lives are enriched and our relationship preserved. I would be happy there myself at that age”.

Dominic Kite, of the Aberdeen Asset Management Charitable Foundation, said: “The opening of the new home is a major milestone for Simeon Care for the Elderly, boosting its capacity and allowing it to enhance its service. At this momentous time for Simeon, we’re pleased to have delivered them a moving in gift in the shape of a donation towards furnishing the new facility.”

MHApicA leading north-east charity has been given a surprise funding boost by the International Association of Drilling Contractors (IADC).

The North Sea Chapter of the organisation has donated £6,100 to Mental Health Aberdeen (MHA), after members supported the charity at their annual safety awards.

Attendees were asked to make personal donations to IADC’s two selected charities, MHA and Alzheimer Scotland.

The money raised was matched by the chapter, bringing the total amount to £12,200. This enabled the two charities to receive a donation of £6,100 each to help support their work.

Astrid Whyte, chief executive of MHA, said:

“This donation was a wonderful surprise and we were delighted to meet Derek Hart of the IADC to receive the cheque. Fundraising efforts like this are a fantastic help as we try to make a real difference to the lives of children, young people and families within our communities.

“Demand for our services is high throughout the north-east and this gesture will help us as we work hard to meet requirements. We would like to thank everyone at IADC who thought of us and contributed to the collection, it means a lot to us.”

Future Choices received a fabulous cheque for £7092.03 from Sainsbury’s Garthdee.

The sum was raised through dedicated fundraising from Sainsbury’s Garthdee store staff and customers, Future Choices being voted as their Charity of the Year for 2014-2015.

Margaret Pitcairn of Sainsbury’s presented the cheque to Future Choices along with colleagues.

David Forbes, Chairperson, Future Choices stated:

“Future Choices is absolutely delighted to receive such an amazing donation. We have a brilliant relationship with Sainsbury’s Garthdee who provide such great support to charities and communities. Future Choices is a volunteer led charity undertaking fantastic, important work providing a range of activities for disabled people every week at Inchgarth Community Centre. This includes arts and crafts, boccia, board games, dominoes and provides an opportunity for people to meet up, socialise and support each other. The charity continues to grow with the support of the community and volunteers.

Dons Captain Russell Anderson and Vice-Captain Mark Reynolds discovered not a pot of gold but a gold ribbon on their pitch which appeared during Childhood cancer Awareness Month this September.

Childhood Cancer Awareness Month is raising awareness of the impact of childhood cancer, and of CLIC Sargent’s work supporting young cancer patients and their families.

Every month, thousands of families deal with the devastating impact of a cancer diagnosis and its treatment. Cancer treatment for children is often gruelling and can start immediately, last as long as three years and take place many miles from home.

Throughout September, people across the UK are going gold – wearing gold ribbons, holding their own gold event or texting “GOLD” to 70030 to donate £3* to CLIC Sargent for Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.

At the home of his heroes was 8 year old Fraser Adams from Aberdeen who is currently being treated for Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia at Aberdeen’s Royal Children’s Hospital.  The family are being supported by CLIC Sargent’s nurse and social worker. Fraser was diagnosed in May 2013 and has another 2 years of treatment left.

The first 3 phases of Fraser’s treatment was very intense, he missed a lot of school and had very little energy. He’s now in the Maintenance stage of his treatment and is feeling fit and well.  He is back full time at school, back at his school football training and participating in the game he loves.

“Childhood Cancer Awareness Month is a fantastic opportunity to show we are standing by children with cancer, and their families.”

Most Scottish animal welfare organisations get no government support: the charities must rely on private donations to keep going.

The cost of keeping animals, their food, shelter, heating and care, continues to rise, while the economy shows only modest growth.

Our local charities are not only struggling for donations, but they are also struggling to home animals which are being abandoned at an alarming rate.

Without shelter places, animals such as horses may wind up in the slaughterhouse, and other animals may be put down.

With no end to these problems in sight, help from the private sector is more important than ever. These are some of the organisations that home and rehome animals; your donations, whether goods, food, money or even time will be appreciated.

  • Blaikiewell Animal Sanctuary

Mavis Petrie, her brother Bert, and volunteers take care of “over 60 horses and ponies, two Jersey cows, and six pigs as well as cats, dogs and any other animal or bird that needs a safe place”.  They have been going since the 1970s, but are now facing their biggest challenge. The Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route cuts through the countryside and through Blaikiewell.  This charity has already lost prime grazing fields, and as a direct result faces higher feed costs.

Willows is home to hundreds of animals, from pigs to peacocks, and lately it has taken on a considerable number of the abandoned horses and ponies that might otherwise have been put down.

Rescues come from all over the UK. Willows’ Animal Assisted Therapy programme is designed to improve the physical, social, emotional, and/or cognitive functioning of the patient, as well as to provide educational and motivational effectiveness for the participant. It has been running for over eight years.

As well as rehoming a wide range of animals including budgies, cats, dogs and equines, the Scottish SPCA investigates cases of animal neglect and cruelty.  There have been recent high profile cases of neglect and abuse in the Grampian area. In some instances animals were in such a poor state that they had to be put down.

The Scottish SPCA relies on the public not only for donations, but also for information about animal cruelty. Their hotline number for anyone with information about possible animal abuse or neglect is 03000 999 999.

  • Mountains Animal Shelter

Mountains has been going for thirty years and has helped over 600 horses. However, it faces the same struggles as the other organisations, and last year received a blow.  Just after a successful nativity play early in December 2012, thieves broke in and stole goods and cash worth thousands. Even their CCTV system was stolen.

Thankfully no animals were harmed or taken. Its founder, Alan Beaufort Fraser, passed away in 2010 after a lifetime helping animals throughout Europe.

Animal Concern Advice Line (ACAL)’s John Robins has been an active voice for animals in Scotland for years now; ACAL campaigned actively to save the Tullos Hill deer, and is currently highlighting the shooting of seals and the cruelty involved in intensive salmon fish farming.

ACAL offers advice and assistance and has a great deal of expertise focused on improving the welfare of animals whether wild, domestic or farm.

The New Arc recently changed from a rescue and rehoming centre to a rescue and sanctuary. They are no longer taking in unwanted pets, but are to widen their wildlife rescue work. They will still assist with lost and found pets, cruelty and abandoned animals, but will refer unwanted pets to other organisations who may be able to help.

Rape and Abuse Support (RAS) are delighted to accept a generous donation of £1,000 from the Fine Piece Community Cafe based in Sheddocksley Baptist Church, which marks its 5th Anniversary on Friday 13th December.

The Fine Peace Community Cafe launched almost five years ago and this year won an Aberdeen Impact Award for Best Emerging Social Enterprise.

Supported by 30 volunteers, the Cafe has established a reputation for providing good food and good service.

To mark their 5th Anniversary, the Cafe will make a series of donations to local community groups and schools as recognition of the good work being carried out locally.

Rape and Abuse Support provides support for anyone who has experienced rape, sexual abuse or sexual exploitation at any point in their life, as well as working within the community to develop awareness of the issues surround rape, sexual abuse and sexual exploitation.

Lorraine Dobson, Volunteer Co-ordinator at RAS says:

“We are delighted to accept such a generous donation from the Fine Piece Community Cafe.

“It is always uplifting to have the hard work of our staff and volunteers recognised and the donation will allow us to progress with plans to develop the service we provide.”
