Michele Binnie and Courage the Cat launch the Scottish Bed Making Championship

Cash for Kids’ Michele Binnie and charity mascot Courage the Cat launch the Scottish Bed Making Championship at Village Urban Resort

Hospital corners will be the order of the day when a new competition is held in Aberdeen next month. The city is to play host to the inaugural Scottish Bed Making Championship on Thursday, 06 August.

The brainchild of local children’s charity Cash for Kids, the event forms part of its fundraising efforts for this year’s Bed Appeal.

The appeal, which officially launched earlier this month, aims to provide underprivileged children in north-east Scotland with a bed of their own and local disabled youngsters with specialist beds.

The charity hopes this year’s Bed Appeal will raise around £25,000 to purchase beds for more than 100 local underprivileged and disabled children.

The Scottish Bed Making Championship will be staged at Kingswells’ Village Urban Resort and is expected to attract entries from hotels, guest houses, care providers and hospitals in north-east Scotland.

Teams of four will be challenged to make a double bed – fitting sheets, pillow slips and duvet covers – as quickly as possible, before then making a bed which will be judged on its presentation. Points will be awarded for each task, with the two highest scoring teams then taking part in a bed race to be crowned Scottish Bed Making Champions.  The winners will also win a corporate bowling night courtesy of Codona’s.

Cash for Kids charity manager Michele Binnie said:

“We are very excited to be launching the Scottish Bed Making Championship, which will be an important part of the 2015 Bed Appeal. The appeal highlights the issues of poverty and disability that families here in the north-east are facing.

“The championship is open to any team that wants to show off its bed making prowess, whether they’re from the hospitality and care industries or another sector entirely. Cash for Kids is grateful to Village Urban Resort Aberdeen for getting behind the event and we look forward to a great evening on Thursday, 06 August.”

Tracy Harrison, general manager of Village Urban Resort Aberdeen, said:

“The Scottish Bed Making Championship is a fantastic initiative to raise funds for this important appeal. It gives housekeeping teams in hotels and guest houses, and nursing and care staff a chance to shine at something they have to do proficiently and speedily each day.

“The championship is not just about making a bed quickly, but also presenting it well. The judges will be looking for crisp hospital corners and well plumped pillows. It will no doubt be a fun and competitive event, and one that we hope our hospitality colleagues across the north-east, and further afield, will get behind.”

Entry to the Scottish Bed Making Championship costs £100 for a team of four people, all of which goes directly to the Bed Appeal. Anyone interested in entering a team should contact Michele Binnie on 01224 337010 or michele.binnie@northsound.co.uk, or register online at www.northsound1.com/bed.

Cash for Kids is Northsound Radio’s listeners’ charity. It makes grants to individuals, families, children’s groups, organisations and projects throughout the Northsound transmission area. All money is raised locally and spent locally to benefit local disabled and disadvantaged children and young people under 18. More information on Cash for Kids can be found at www.northsound1.com/cashforkids, or telephone 01224 337010.

Bed Appeal launch 2015 3

Lisa Grainger and Michelle Ferguson of Cash for Kids with charity mascot Courage the Cat launching the 2015 Bed Appeal

With thanks to Ian McLaren, Innes Associates.

A major campaign that has the potential to change lives by providing underprivileged children in north-east Scotland with a bed of their own and local disabled youngsters with specialist beds has been launched by Cash for Kids.
Now in its third year, the charity’s month-long Bed Appeal aims to raise £25,000 to purchase beds for more than 100 children living in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire.

The appeal was officially launched on Saturday at John Lewis in Aberdeen.

The Aberdeen-based charity has provided over 260 beds as a result of its two previous appeals. This has included specialist beds for disabled children. One such child that Cash for Kids has supported is Rhys Munro.

The five-year-old from Banchory is blind and has epilepsy, and also suffers from severe reflux and poor trunk control. Due to his condition he lacks mobility and requires a safe and secure place to sleep and spend time during the day.

Having outgrown his cot, his family applied to Cash for Kids for assistance to purchase a specialist, fully-adjustable £4,500 bed for the youngster. The bed is fitted with protective sides to prevent Rhys rolling out and hurting himself. It can also be raised or lowered electronically, allowing it to meet his changing needs and those of his carers.

His mum, Sarah Newman, said:

“The support we have had from Cash for Kids has been brilliant. The bed was very expensive and I never thought we would get funding to cover the total cost.  I was absolutely elated when I found out they would cover the total cost. This fully-adjustable bed is future-proof, which is a massive weight off our shoulders.

“Rhys’s condition means he will never be able to sleep in a normal bed as he could roll out, so a specialist bed was needed. A bed is a basic thing, but for us it ticks so many boxes. This bed is life-changing. Not only is it somewhere comfortable for Rhys to sleep, but it doubles up as a place we can change him, so being able to electronically adjust the height of the bed to suit the carer is important.

“Rhys would probably spend most of his day in his bed. He absolutely loves it. Because of his disabilities he doesn’t have mobility and isn’t able to run about like normal children, so the bed is somewhere he spend time during the day listening to music or audio books and we know he is safe and secure.

“Donations to the Bed Appeal can make a massive difference to people on your doorstep. A bed seems like a simple thing, but for certain children it is a vital, basic need and can be life-changing.”

Cash for Kids provides grant funding to families, children’s groups and associations across the region on a quarterly basis. It is once again running the appeal in response to a large number of applications from families to help fund a bed for their child.

The charity is again working with Aberdeen mattress, divan and furniture manufacturer and supplier Glencraft. The bed firm, which operates as a social enterprise, will supply beds to Cash for Kids at a reduced rate.

Michele Binnie, Cash for Kids charity manager, said:

“We continue to be surprised by the number of applications we receive from families seeking funding to purchase beds for their children. Cash for Kids’ Bed Appeal not only aims to ensure these children get a good night’s sleep, but also improve their health and quality of life.

“With this year’s Bed Appeal we hope to provide greater support to families with disabled children. As we have seen with Rhys, specialist beds are vital for these children and their families. Although the bed costs a considerable amount, it has a transformational impact on their lives. The smallest of donations to the Bed Appeal can make a large, positive impact on children’s lives here in the north-east.”

Robert Garnish, head of branch at John Lewis Aberdeen said:

“John Lewis always aims to contribute to the well-being of the communities where it operates, and here at John Lewis Aberdeen, we are really pleased to support local charities in any way we can. The Cash for Kids Bed Appeal is such a fantastic way of raising money to help support local families in the area, and we’re delighted to be supporting it for a second year. We really hope that the campaign continues to grow from strength to strength.”

Cash for Kids is calling on the north-east public to get behind its Bed Appeal, which runs throughout July. The charity is encouraging people to wear their slippers to work for a month, organise breakfast bake sales and hold pyjama or onesie to work days.

Any individual, organisation or business that wishes to get involved in the Bed Appeal should contact Michele Binnie on 01224 337010 or michele.binnie@northsound.co.uk, or visit www.northsound1.com/bed.

With thanks to David Forbes.

Aberdeen based disabilities charity Future Choices will join a host of other charities up and down the country to help Celebrate Volunteers Week.

This nationwide event gives the unsung heroes of the 3rd sector important recognition – and Future Choices is determined to show their volunteers how much they are appreciated.

Volunteers week is a special moment in the diary for the local charity as it’s been recognising it’s volunteers for the last 7 years since being a completely 100% voluntary led organisation.

David Forbes, Chairman for the Charity says:

“We as a charity are absolutely reliant on those who give up their time to help others, so recognising our dedicated team during this nationwide event is hugely important to us.

“One great thing we have to celebrate this year is the youngest volunteer joining our team, 16 year old Liam McDonald, it’s people like Liam that are our future and having Liam on the team is so inspiring to others his age, making a huge difference to those who need it the most.”

Liam McDonald said:

“I personally really enjoy helping out with future choices, I feel volunteering is a good thing to do at a young age. Volunteering for future choices benefits me in more than just one way, I get to help out a good friend with his charity and I get to bring a smile to others faces too which makes me feel better about myself.

“I think it’s great that charities like future choices are there for people in need of help and care.”

The charity are always keen to welcome new members and volunteers so if you feel you could benefit – contact info@future-choices.org.uk or freephone 0800 5668728

Disability charity Momentum Skills has announced details of their next fundraising event.
Beechgrove Garden presenters Jim McColl and Carole Baxter will be answering questions at a Gardener’s Question Time on Wednesday 29th April in the Inverurie Town Hall at 7.30pm. Joining Jim (pictured) and Carole on the panel will be locally based horticultural advisor and soft fruit specialist, Colin Stirling.

“This is the ideal opportunity for all budding gardeners, and indeed those like myself who perhaps just want to find out about gardening generally, to come along and have their horticultural problems and queries answered by these three gardening experts. Of course we also have one of STV’s top presenters hosting the event for us which will most certainly add to the overall enjoyment of the event.”

David said:

“When I got the email from Wobia Entertainment House to inform me I had been nominated for such an award, I was shocked and surprised, but when I got a follow up email to inform me I had actually been shortlisted for the award for “Male Role Model of the Year”, I was in fact utterly speechless and deeply humbled, and I thank who ever put my name forward very much.”

future choicesWith thanks to David Forbes.

Future Choices is a disabilities charity based at Inchgarth Community Centre in Garthdee. It celebrates its sixth Birthday this month.

The charity has been helping the most vulnerable gain social inclusion since 2008, and it is growing daily while remaining voluntary and self-funded.

Recently, Sainsbury’s at Garthdee chose the group as its Local Charity of the Year.

Partnering up with other bodies doesn’t stop there though, as Future Choices is now affiliated to the Chest Heart & Stroke Scotland charity too.

Chairman David Forbes said:

“This support really strengthens our position within the city of Aberdeen, and furthermore, we have the support of Lawrence Milne Decorators, based in Berryden and Ellon who will for one year be donating proceeds of the five pence bag charge to Future Choices. I never ever thought that the charity would be where it is, but I’m thrilled it is where it is and it’s down to having an amazing dedicated team behind me.”

The charity members, who suffer from various physical disabilities, have seen their lives improved by the work of the charity. Its management is very much aware that there are more vulnerable adults out there. Future Choices wants to be able to spread its message to give them hope and the positivity to realise that social isolation doesn’t need to be a regular thing for them.

David added:

“Having my mum, who benefits from the charity, there by my side is the biggest motivation I could ever have. Being not only the chairman for the charity but her full time carer has its challenges, but I’ve seen her benefit from the group a lot, building friendships and having fun.”

Future Choices is purely voluntary and is always looking for keen individuals to get involved. If you wish to find out more, visit their website www.future-choices.org.uk , email: info@future-choices.org.uk or freephone 0800 5668728

Aberdeen Based Charity Future Choices had the best news lately. Apache Oil have donated a brand new bus. With thanks to David Forbes.

bus12cThe bus donation came after the Disabled Charity was featured in a BBC2 Documentary last year called “Auction Hero”, in which Presenter/Auctioneer Andrew Lamberty went all across Europe to buy and sell antiques, then donated the profits to the Charity.

The self funding charity is run by volunteers and helps provide social inclusion and recreational activities at Inchgarth Community Centre in Garthdee.

Representatives from Apache Oil saw the Documentary and were extremely impressed by the groups work and dedication within the community and wanted to help their cause. The new brand new 17 seater bus, equipped for disabled access, has now given Future Choices a better chance of helping more disabled people, most of whom are stuck in their homes, limiting scope for social contact.

David Forbes, Chairman of Future Choices described the news as:

“The turning point to the Charity, knowing Apache Oil has helped give us the tools to carry on with our hard work, it just means everything. So many people, especially those who just want out and have fun with friends, can now do that. Future Choices is there to help put those smiles and laughter back on the faces”

The Charity is always looking for Volunteers to help out at their group gatherings on Tuesdays from 11-2 at Inchgarth Community Centre.

If you want to become a volunteer or simply want to join the charity to meet new people, then contact David on 07821700046 or email info@future-choices.org.uk or visit their website at www.future-choices.org.uk

ALL_SHAPES_FINAL_CS_SQ2 North 4 South is a fundraising event to raise money for individuals with learning disabilities in Aberdeen.

On the 31st of May & the 1st of June, a group of around 70 people will be walking non-stop, or with minimum stops, from Fraserburgh to Aberdeen over 24 hours.
The money they raise will be used to provide ‘fun’ for learning disabled people, such as musical instruments, movies, arts & crafts materials, and so on.

One of the organisers, Frederick Sarran commented about people with learning disabilities in our area, saying:-

“We, All Shapes And Sizes (ASAS), believe they need more than just ‘care’.”

The charity’s Facebook charity page can be found here: https://www.facebook.com/asascharity; its aims are set out as:

“Our aim is to enrich the lives of ALD’s by promoting social inclusion by means of outings and activities such as Arts and Crafts and more.”

Many of those doing the walk work with people with learning disabilities, young and old, but anyone who is up to the challenge is welcome to get in touch with the organisers and join in.

ASAS sets out its principles on its website:

“Our vision is to enhance life of Adults with Learning Disabilities/Difficulties (ALD) and mental health issues by promoting social inclusion to those individuals and to raise awareness & understanding to the public. By enhancing their lives & sense of wellbeing is to become a valued member of society via inclusion in all things.

“We aim to use a person centred approach directly to one individual and/or within a group, in order to aid & help facilitate crafts, arts, outings and other future activities within Balnagask Court (Aberdeen) and in the wider community. To enhance a sense of personal well being is to educate with a therapeutic approach and fun means, this results in building trust and confidence.

“Our values are to treat all individuals with respect and courtesy regardless of colour, gender, religion, etc… We act with dignity & care in a non-judgmental way towards all individuals, no matter of the level of difficulties they may have. Those values also apply towards each other members of All Shapes And Sizes.

“Our goals are to branch out and liaise with other charities sharing our values, for the good of all Adults with Learning Disabilities/Difficulties and mental health service users within the wider community. We aim to introduce further activities and continuous improvements to Balnagask Court communal area.”
