Fridge Magnets Attract Scots Alternative Music Award

Fridge Magnets are beginning to get the notice and acclaim they deserve. Music companies are getting interested, and the act has just won a major music award. Magnet Steve Winton tells Aberdeen Voice about that experience.

The awards are the Scottish Alternative Music Awards created by Richie Muirhead in 2010, and the only awards of their type in Scotland. The chosen venue for the annual ceremony this year was The Garage in Glasgow.
Nominees are selected by a panel chosen from throughout Scotland and ranging from gig promoters to Radio DJs.

We were nominated for Best Electronic Act with four other established Scottish acts. It then went to public vote on the SAMA website. Over 18,000 votes were cast for the whole competition, double the number of the previous year.

We were delighted when our name was read out as winners, and to be honest we were shocked. The other acts, notably Rustie and Discopolis had an amazing year in 2011 and we really didn’t think we would win.

We were also fortunate to be asked to perform at the awards. There was a 700 capacity sell out and we played in front of heavy-hitting Scottish music industry people such as Radio 1’s Ally MacRae, Vic Galloway and In:Demand presenter Jim Gellatly. All of them commented on how impressed they were with our performance and all three subsequently played our track on their radio shows the following Sunday and Monday.

It was a great opportunity for us to play in front of a crowd that hadn’t seen us, in some cases hadn’t even heard of us before, and we seemed to win them over. The Facebook and Twitter pages were going crazy the following day, commenting on how well we did. We then went on to play the official after-party at a smaller venue in Glasgow and sold it out as well. It was probably the best experience we have had thus far as a band.

We are extremely grateful to everyone who voted and we’re delighted with the win. Our next gig in Aberdeen is at The Tunnels on March 24.

Electro wizards Fridge Magnets have been nominated in the Best Electronic Act category at the Scottish Alternative Music Awards.

Fridge Magnets have already shared big stages with Calvin Harris, Alex Metric, Japanese Popstars and Burns and have played at T in the Park and Rockness.

With this nomination, they appear to be going from strength to strength. Their early demos have already been featured on Radio 1 and the Glaswegian/Aberdonian outfit are attracting attention from some big London labels.

Pete lectures on Soils and Global Change at Aberdeen University. Since 1996 he has served on Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) which was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007. He was the Convening Lead Author of the Agricultural Greenhouse Gas Mitigation chapter of the IPCC Fourth Assessment Report (Working Group III). He has coordinated and participated in many national and international projects on soils, agriculture, greenhouse gases, climate change, mitigation and impacts, and ecosystem modelling. He is a Fellow of the Society of Biology, a Research Fellow of the Royal Society (London), and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh.

The long running controversial subject of Nuclear Weapons comes to the fore in Aberdeen next week when the Mayor of Nagasaki will be speaking on behalf of a nuclear free world. Tomihisa Taue, Mayor of Nagasaki and Vice President of Mayors for Peace will be talking about the effects of the atomic bomb dropped on Nagasaki on August 9th 1945. In the initial explosion and over the succeeding years over 200,000 of Nagasaki’s men women and children died agonisingly either from blast, burns, crushed limbs and bodies and latterly of leukemia, cancers and other tumours.

Mayors for Peace has over four thousand member cities in one hundred and forty four countries world-wide – sixty two of which are in the UK.

A fantastic opportunity to catch up with some of the best musical talent the city has to offer will take place this Saturday [23rd]  in venues across the town as part of the Oxjam Takeover music festival.

Oxjam is a UK wide event with festivals taking place in around 30 cities.

With 25 local bands performing across five city centre stages this Saturday, there has been a huge amount of preparation to get things ready for the Aberdeen gigs.

Andy Kite, Marketing Coordinator said;

“We’ve been working at getting the festival in place since May and there has been a great deal of planning to put it in place.  From arranging line-ups, venues, timings, promotion and fundraisers things have been very hectic but we’ve all enjoyed every minute.

“The bands have all been great and seem really keen to get involved so we are really confident of putting on a great event so we urge everyone to come along and have a great time.  We really want to contribute to the charity and raise as much money as possible while using the festival as a showcase of the talent we have in Aberdeen.”

An eclectic line-up ensures there is something for everyone.

Both rooms in the Tunnels will be used with performances from Weather Barn (formerly Cast of the Capital), Le Reno Amps, The Deportees, Turning 13, Marionettes, Cuddly Shark, Eric Euan, Duke, Carson Wells and Katerwaul.

The Blue Lamp will serve up a party atmosphere featuring The Lorelei, The Gerry Jablonski Band, The Oxbow Lake, Chris Carroll and Flora Cook.

For those looking for something more reserved and intimate Enigma will host an acoustic night with the vocal talents of Jo McCafferty supported by The Kitchen Cynics, Craig Davidson, Sarah J Stanley and The Scandal Extracts.

Finally there will be a night of rock and roll on display at Cafe Drummonds with The Wildcards, Kashmir Red, Energy!, Emerald Sunday and Talking Sideways.

Tickets cost £5 and allow unlimited access to all stages and can be bought at One Up and www.wegottickets.com as well as on the door of each venue on the evening.  Doors open at 7pm with the first acts taking the stage around 7.30pm and there is an aftershow party at the Tunnels.  All money raised on the night is donated to Oxfam and contributes to Oxjam’s overall fundraising targets.

sound is the North East of Scotland’s contemporary music festival. Following a pilot event, “Upbeat” in 2004, the first festival was launched in November 2005. sound is now an annual event, which aims to make contemporary music more accessible to audiences of all ages and backgrounds. Less is More: minimalism at heart of 2010 sound Festival

Offering more than 60 performances in over 20 venues across North East Scotland, the 6th sound Festival will open on Wednesday 20 October with a performance by the Red Note Ensemble at Woodend Barn, Banchory, featuring the World Première of Gabriel Jackson’s new work for strings, and will run until Sunday 14 November.

This autumn sees sound joining forces with the Glasgow Concert Halls to offer a Scottish celebration of Minimalism. Following a weekend of concerts in Glasgow launching Glasgow’s Concert Halls’ three year exploration of the genre, sound picks up the baton with five days of performances under the banner Less is More including works by composers such as Bryars, Fitkin, Glass, Gordon, Nyman, Reich and Riley. The Smith Quartet makes a welcome return to sound with four concerts including a performance of the complete string quartets of Philip Glass. Other highlights of Less is More sound include the Festival’s opening concert with Red Note Ensemble.

The Ceilidh is being held in the legendary Blue Lamp, on the Gallowgate in Aberdeen – Surely the most famous Live music venue and finest pubs in Aberdeen. In case you’ve not been there before just look for the actual Blue lamp on the wall above the door. The entrance to the Ceilidh is through the revolving door to the right of the lamp up the hill.
There will be a raffle during the interval. Dancing will be from 7.45/8pm till midnight. The bar usually remains open till 2 if you are in need of some lubrication after the ceilidh.

Suffragette City – A Fun And Inspiring Blend

On Wednesday, 29th September, an exciting and thought-provoking event described as “Part call to action, part show, part club night”, was held in The Tunnels, Aberdeen.

Organised by Keava McMillan and Jim Waugh, under the banner of “The Bird And The Ballerina Promotions”, Suffragette City aimed to bring together various left-wing political groups, local action groups, musicians and the public to share ideas, to inform and create understanding, and perhaps spark some inspiration.

In an age where political apathy is rife, and direct action seldom means more than clicking ‘like’ on Facebook, this promised to be a unique and unusual event.

The suitably underground venue of the Tunnels could not have been better for this attempt at injecting some excitement back into politics. A stage for guest speakers, numerous tables stacked high with pamphlets & an area outside the main room where points could be argued & issues debated.

Over the course of the evening a rapid succession of speakers and performance artists was introduced to the stage by compere Nicki Machiavelli.

This was a great opportunity to hear all manner of less established political views, with speakers from CND, Tripping Up Trump, Friends of UTG, Aberdeen Voice, The Green Party, Scottish Palestinian Solidarity, Cuban and Venezuelan Solidarity, Aberdeen Anarchists, the Scottish Socialist Party, The Communist Party and Unite Against Fascism. Speeches were limited to approximately five minutes on stage so there was never a time when any of them became tiresome.

Other slightly more light-hearted, but no less thought provoking “acts” included a short stand up set from local up-and-coming comedian Lewis Muirhead, political performance poetry from Aberdeen’s own radical poet Rapunzel Wizard (who’s pithy yet humorous verse targeted various social evils including local matters such as the Trump golf course, and Ian Wood’s Civic Square proposals), and a folk set from local SSP Candidate Ewan Robertson – joined by his father on the bagpipes.

If the aim of Suffragette City was to put politics in a more accessible and interesting light, then it was certainly a success

For many, the highlight of the evening was the Edinburgh based ‘Zorras’ – two witty, intelligent female performers who mixed poetry, singing and a megaphone to great effect. Their spellbinding performance brought the first part of the evening to a very satisfying close.

Rapunzel Wizard’s band ‘The Dog’s Botox’ delivered a lively and politically charged set  before the event was rounded off  as a club night until closing time to allow those in attendance the chance to mingle, to further discuss, or to just relax.

The mixture of political speakers with musical acts and poetry worked quite well as it blurred the boundaries between entertainment and politics. It was a fun and inspiring blend.

If the aim of Suffragette City was to put politics in a more accessible and interesting light, then it was certainly a success. It’s not often you come back from a club or gig feeling that you want to change the world.

REFLECTIONS AND VISIONS
– THE WORLD THROUGH DIFFERENT EYES

Launch of an exhibition of photographs from young people who have had experiences of care. They were supported in the project by SIRCC (The Scottish Institute for Residential Child Care) and the exhibition was launched at the SIRCC annual conference in June to celebrate 10 years of the organisation.There will be a civic reception on Thursday the 7th of October to launch the exhibition in Aberdeen, where it runs in different venues for the next month.

Oxjam Tuning Up For A Night To Remember

The Oxjam Music Festival is really hitting a note across Aberdeen.  With just over a month remaining till the big day, activities are starting to pick up with a view to raising funds and awareness for Oxfam.

Having already generated over £1,000 in the city through events such as a music quiz and a guitar hero tournament confidence is high for breaking targets in the run up to the festival, titled “The Takeover”.

Taking place on the 23rd of October, the festival will showcase some of the top artists from across the city with 25 bands performing across five stages.  Headlining The Tunnels will be Weather Barn and Le Reno Amps with both acts hugely popular with music fans in the north east.  The Wildcards and Kashmir Red will rock Cafe Drummonds while Jo McCafferty and The Kitchen Cynics will bring ambience to Enigma.  Finally, local favourites The Lorelei and Gerry Jablonski and his Electric Band will light up the Blue Lamp.

Oxjam Music Programmer Shawn Skinner declared “We are absolutely delighted with the quality of acts we have playing The Takeover and feel there is something for everyone.  We aimed to capture a cross section of the music scene in Aberdeen and believe we have that.  We’ve booked some local big hitters, renowned acoustic acts, blues and folk bands for a party atmosphere and encapsulated the spirit of rock and roll.  The best part is we can make a difference to people’s lives by listening to some of our favourite bands.  It’s incredible to think that around a billion people in the world don’t have access to clean water and while we can’t rectify this issue, we can certainly attempt to raise awareness and play our part in changing it.”

Tickets can be bought for £5 and provide unlimited access to each stage.  Hopes are high that each venue will be full to deliver a night to remember with every penny going to Oxfam with the money used to fight poverty and climate change.  A little money can go along way as, for instance, £429 is enough money to build a library and fill it with books and £720 can supply clean water for a village of 800 people.

At present the Aberdeen team at Oxjam have already raised enough funds for both of these initiatives.  Those attending The Takeover can also take part in “signing” a visual petition by having their pictures taken with the Oxfam “Fair Deal” handstamp with the photographs being put together in a collage and sent to world leaders.  Tickets for The Takeover can be bought at One Up on Belmont Street and at www.wegottickets.com.
